Hi Gaylord and everyone! This is a cool soundtrack to make gyros to

Good evening, Gaylord. I hope the NFL draft met your expectations.

it's unseasonably cool here in
south Arkansas, but I'm on my porch anyway, and with Gaylord's show I'm having something pretty close to a perfect moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Ken From Hyde Park: This has been a weekend where I haven't had a moment to myself, so I don't even know how the Giants drafted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm

@listener paul: How lovely! Thanks for sharing that with me!

Thot that Searches might be the Iveys
...Half a Century ago, Hendrix was on tour w/ The Walkers, Cat Stevens & Englebert Humperdink...helluva show!
  8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hearing the original Frankie valli version of this is always interesting. So different from the more familiar Walker brothers version...
Avatar 9:07pm
gal_x:

Thank you, @david from ks. It is a portrait of the actress Anna May Wong. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Bronwyn Bishop: Frankie's original has a similar arrangement but is surprisingly tamer. The added Johnny Franz bombast of the Walkers' version brings it to life.
  9:07pm
Carmichael:

I heard an interview with Bob Gaudio a few years ago, and they played the Valli version. As a Walker fan, I was pleasantly surprised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Carmichael: Someone needs to interview the genius arranger Charles Calello. That someone may have to be me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nice Arrangement & Recording on the Frankie. Great singer. But Walkers sound like they mean the melodrama.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The amazing Broadcast - like United States of America meet Syd's Floyd.
  9:14pm
Carmichael:

@Gaylord: Please! It also goes to show what a great song it is, no matter who sings it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: I agree with that equation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Carmichael: True! It really is majestic! I hope to hear it live someday performed with full Wall of Sound production and by a sympathetic singer.
Avatar 9:17pm
Old Dave:

@ gal- Wong was rejected for Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth?" What the hell?
Buck's farm is near where we live in Pennsylvania. Lots of paradox to this day.
I love her writing anyway.
  9:18pm
Kate:

Hey Gaylord! So great to see you at the Record Fair!! Was that Broadcast and the Focus Group you just played as in Trish Keenan Broadcast? Loving the show so much!
Avatar 9:19pm

@Old Dave — White washing and racism is not new. :(
Avatar 9:19pm
gal_x:

@Old Dave : Interestesting tidbit about Pearl S Buck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Old Dave: Casting Anna May Wong to play against Paul Muni would have been considered "miscegenation" (which is effed up from about 17 angles).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Kate: Likewise in seeing you! Thanks so much for listening and saying hello! And yes, that is the same Broadcast (Trish Keenan, R.I.P.).
Avatar 9:23pm
Old Dave:

Agreed, Gaylord. A Chinese man could never play Charlie Chan back in the day, or the world would end!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Old Dave: And heaven forfend we have a Chinese-American actress playing the love interest of a European-American actor — even if he's playing a Chinese character! So guess who had to go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Frankly, they're still casting white people to play others.
Avatar 9:30pm
Marc Francis:

What a beautiful song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Marc Francis: Oh, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This Dion is '65?? When the bYRds had barely happened...
  9:34pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

YES YES YES
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: If Columbia hadn't gotten cold feet on releasing Dion's new direction, he would have gotten credit for being a folk-rock pioneer as well as its greatest practitioner. My god, that song I just played!!!
  9:34pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

As a huge (unironic) fan of Al Jardine, I'm so happy you're playing this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Bronwyn Bishop: Alan Jardine is deserving of your love. Such a versatile and unheralded vocalist!
  9:37pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yeah- when I met him last year, I told him how much I loved his voice and he seemed really surprised and happy that someone had approached him to tell him that.
Avatar 9:38pm
Old Dave:

The Pearl Buck Foundation is a thing, actual and factual. I interviewed their director a few decades ago on behalf of the US Peace Corps. At the time their mission was cleaning up the problem of unwanted an left behind kids of US service men in SE Asia.
Their work is never done...
Sorry, I know politics forbidden now on FMU! I will stop now.
This is a very healing show, Gaylord.
Many thanks.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Was it Al who brought 'Sloop John B' to them? The Folk fan in the Boys? No surprise they can all sing - but still!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Bronwyn B: Al's singing on that one song on the Beach Boys' most recent album ("From There to Back Again") was the LP's runaway highlight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Yep, Al was the group's folkie.
  9:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gaylord: true, I love that song!
  9:47pm
