This is a #1 ESS in downtown Montreal, featuring the Canadian "Pre- 'Dial Tone First'" arrangement, which was implemented on blue Northern Centurion coin phones. I don't know whether this was a "semi-DTF" arrangement or a crude temporary DTF arrangement which allowed things like "0" to be dialed without a coin.

I highly recommend the HOPE conference, every other summer in NYC. Always lots of us* old phone phreakers there, and always some talks/presentations/demos on the subject. *of course I've never actually done this
As someone who all but sprinted home w/ his first smartphone so he could put a Conet numbers tone on it as the ringtone, I declare tonight's exploration into electronic mystery utterly riveting.
