Speaking of movies, the new Twin Peaks is basically just a new 18-hour-long David Lynch movie. Not previously watching Twin Peaks won't make much difference IMHO. It's just as incomprehensible (based on the 4 hours so far) either way. It's glacial, terrifying, funny, weird, frustrating, ominous, annoying, silly, and beautiful.

@Ike I've seen the first two episodes so far (trying to space it out so I don't have to wait so long in between). I'm digging it, though I'm guessing there will be those who HATE it. The new incarnation of The Arm is incredible. I feel like we're finally seeing what would have been if Mulholland Drive got picked up to series.

Mulholland Drive: Lynch's masterpiece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
ɨ k ɛ:

@JtotheK, maybe I shouldn't have rewatched the original series first because I don't think this has much to do with it, really. It's delightfully Lynchian, but none of the characters seem to be quite the same. At first you think just one or two characters are controlled by Lovecraftian forces from beyond the red curtain, but then almost everyone seems to be possessed by dorky aliens or autistic ghosts. Especially... because... they... almost... all... have... weird... halting... speech... patterns.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
JtotheK:

@ike - i did read that Lynch suggested that the new episodes would tie to FWWM, so I rewatched that, too. What struck me is having watched a bunch in the past week and then episode 1-2 on Sunday -- how different everything looked in HiDef. (A review I read touched on this as well.)
Avatar 4:22pm
V Priceless:

David Lynch credited with 'sound design' on new Twin Peaks - I find the sheer absence (so far) of much of Badalamenti's signature 'soundtrack' to be one of the most startling elements so far! Digging it, and can't wait to see where it goes next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm

@Fabio, agreed. Even crazier that 2/3rds of it was originally a TV pilot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - he's the Lovecraftian Kubrick (?). & yet, he's all Transcendental Meditation patronized by TheBeatles & stuff. It's all the Internal, I suppose...
Avatar 4:24pm
Chris from DC:

I had a colleague swear to me he knew exactly what was happening in Mulholland Drive because he "read it online" or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
The Oscar:

@JtotheK It definitely feels more of a piece with FWWM than the series. Some years ago a local moviehouse did an all-night marathon of the first season. As a surprise, they opened with a 35mm print of FWWM-- which was VERY confusing to the uninitiated friends I brought!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
JtotheK:

And also I wondered how different my reaction would have been had I /not/ rewatched. I would not have remembered a lot of plot points, but I think I'd have a different reaction to the characters (as in - 'wow, I haven't seen them in years' as opposed to 'I just saw them as teenagers last week!).
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
JtotheK:

@the oscar - re: FWWM - I saw it once on DVD years ago until rewatching this weekend. I read there are hours of deleted scenes, which apparently are on later DVD releases. those would be interesting to check out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I suppose the most obvious Theme in Lynch is that Society is one thing on the surface, & *quite* another beneath - & yet occupying basically the same space. That's close to the main assertion of Surrealism (& who has ever more successfully done Surrealism on Network TV?) - & certainly a pertinent observation about Homo Sapiens @ the current stage of evolution...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
The Oscar:

@JtotheK They're all on the blu-ray release of the series. I haven't gotten around to watching them yet, but it apparently has most (if not all) of the characters absent from the film (and more Bowie!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
The Oscar:

Also, despite all the weirdness of the new episodes, the most startling thing for me might have been seeing Matthew Lillard as a middle-aged high school principal.

Parq:

My two cents? All the fuss over what Mullholland Drive is "about" reflects a sad, drab literalism that has latched onto us all. Can't we just enjoy the vibe, the beauty, the humor, without worrying about some specific, linear "meaning? Wasn't it Thomas Merton (not exactly a hippie space-cadet) who said "Does everything always have to mean something?"

Reflexively seeking meaning seems pretty natural to me. But meaning isn't always a matter of finding the key to a roman a clef or mapping the real world correlatives in an allegory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mullholland pivots startlingly from Subjective to Objective & back I suppose - re a person struggling in SoCal culture. 2001 is about extraterrestrial influenced human evolution. Rilly challenging stuff, I know - but we believe in you & think you'll be okay...
  4:59pm
Cliff (temporarily not) in Prague:

In the book they go to Saturn (more astrolgically significant), but they changed it to Jupiter for the movie because they wanted to use the imags NASA was receiving from the Pioneer Mission.

@Parq:@4:44,agree, and well put. Lynch has his obsessions which even he probably doesn't want to understand. Mullholland Drive belongs to one of my favorite film genres, the Hollywood movie about Hollywood. As a native with a few imdb entries,(none of them distinguished ), the film is a tour of speculation & scandal, craft and technology, specific & dream landscape, and "Drive" in the literal and psychological sense. In short, poetry.
