This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

I rarely credit the "intro" sounds because I usually just sort of hastily pick from a bunch of filed recordings right before the show, but this one is Iasos, "The Paradise Bird Of Endless Melodies"

really good cassette

Hi Carm! How's your mind doing now that it's out of control?

I'm ok, I'm alright. Sorta pumped about that boy Corbyn, but I've been out of the loop for a couple hours now.

hello! i dig that Sven Grunberg LP, but what i dig more is the typography
Avatar 7:09pm
Flash Strap:

Hello Hyde and totally, it's so good

i've been staring at it and wondering if I wish the "Hingus" was larger, or perfect as is
Avatar 7:10pm
Flash Strap:

also personally dig super hard on that Syncro typography, as well as these righteous ladies all over it
Avatar 7:13pm
hyde:

dang, Sunny Ade. that brings me back. i have probably already mentioned at some point that i saw them in Massachusetts on thir first tour of the states.
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

that must have been really good! he seems like one of those "world" crossover hits that didn't let western pop-attention ruin his sound

where did he play?
Avatar 7:20pm
hyde:

he played at this great place in Sunderland, right by UMass, where i also saw bands like X, James Brown and Muddy Waters. I think it was 1982 or 1983, right after Juju Music came out.

i think the band felt a little disappointed after only playing a couple hours, since it felt like they were just getting warmed up. but the best part was that it was winter, and after the show in the parking lot it started to snow. the whole band poured out into the lot laughing and playing around. they had never seen snow before, i think.
Avatar 7:21pm

oh! the place was called The Rusty Nail. It burned down at some point.

All I've found on this LP is this sentence: "Daniel Arfib translated with a computer original datas into MUSIC V language, that gives a 'numeric music'"
Avatar 7:43pm

This piece reminds me of indigenous Australian dream paintings, it's the didgireedo like reverberations probably.
Avatar 7:43pm

there's some old cached stuff out there for Daniel Arfib that mentions this LP, but i'm not finding a lot either

Greetings Evan and everyone! Love the rhythm of the show...
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! That's really amazing you'd mention that, I was totally flashing back to a scene in "The Last Wave" where the character's house is flooding. That whole movie is about dreamtime – have you seen it? it's amazing

On that note! which of you recommended it to me that night when I was talking about Peter Weir and Picnic at Hanging Rock? I finally saw it a few months back and loved it immensely
Avatar 7:48pm
hyde:

@Flash that would be me. i'm glad i didn't oversell it!
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

Pay attention, during this track, to the sound of the guitar: "This was the first juju album to use the Hawaiian guitar. Its effect was so spell-binding I still recall being a part of crowds on a Lagos street September 1977 listening in wonder to Sunny's latest innovation: it was unlike anything he had ever attempted. The long steel guitar solo 10:11ff is a rendering of a folk song by the twins, The Lijadu Sisters, "Iya O, Ololufe Mi" (My Mother, My Lover), but Sunny's guitar takes it right into the spheres!"
Avatar 7:49pm
hyde:

i *love* that movie
Avatar 7:49pm

Hi Evan, have always wanted to see both films but have never found them! Where are they available?

Hi Hyde!

Avatar 7:51pm
geezerette:

Hyde, whee are Weir's films available?
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

@G: Both are totally crucial, maybe the only Weir movies that I would call crucial (though there are some gaps what I've seen). I know Criterion put them both out, and they stream on some service... I rented them on DVD from netflix/the library
Avatar 7:53pm

i probably said this then, but i was taking a film class at UMass and they showed the Last Wave and i went to all three screenings of it the week it showed. the only other movie i did this for was for my gangster film class when they showed Joseph h. Lewis' Gun Crazy.

@Flash, I'd love to hear some of your noir story and novel faves. And then hear an entire Explorers Room set or show based on "noir."

Having seen the Criterion of Last Wave, I can say that the quality is eye-popping. every molecule is on screen, and it smells like rain
Avatar 8:04pm

Thanks for locating Last Wave!
Avatar 8:05pm

fwiw, we can connect Gun Crazy and Out of the Past through saying that Peggy Cummins was not only the femme fatale in Lewis' film but was also in Out of the Past director Jacques Torneur's fantastic Night of the Demon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

Sonny Ade does indeed have a really sweet voice, and the percolating percussion beneath it highlights it.

Well I'm sort of a noir novice in a lot of ways, but a giant Chandler enthusiast. I recommend to any person alive his Phillip Marlowe novels. They're all amazing, esp. Long Goodbye and Farewell, My Lovely. And The Little Sister
Avatar 8:09pm

Oh that's right! Out of the Past is directed by Jacques Torneur! Nice! I also need to see Night of the Demon, and like all his other flicks basically. he's so great

@Hyde: wow I want to see that series
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, his whole syncro thing is a little confusing, there's some overlap and repeat release but some of it is re-recording and building on the original. that particular one on the page is super early and has very little of the guitar pyrotechnics of his best work

- "aura" disappointed me a lot more!
Avatar 9:22pm
geezerette:

@Doug, a friend of ours had a rather petulant cat with a nasty temper. Because they were west siders they found a pet psychic. Sessions were conducted by phone. The cat meowed,(or not),into the phone and the psychic translated it's grievances to the owners.
I wish I were making this up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

...but Evan if that sounded very negative it's only because ju ju music blew my mind at the time.
