This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Good evening explorers! Got some good sounds on deck for you tonight
Avatar 6:53pm Flash Strap:

jesus these birds are intense this evening
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

I rarely credit the "intro" sounds because I usually just sort of hastily pick from a bunch of filed recordings right before the show, but this one is Iasos, "The Paradise Bird Of Endless Melodies"

really good cassette
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm doctorjazz:

Hi Flash!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! How are ya?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Carmichael:

Sorry, my mind was being controlled. All better now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm doctorjazz:

Doing great, thanks! How are you and my fellow explorers?
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Carm! How's your mind doing now that it's out of control?

I'm ok, I'm alright. Sorta pumped about that boy Corbyn, but I've been out of the loop for a couple hours now.
Avatar 7:07pm hyde:

hello! i dig that Sven Grunberg LP, but what i dig more is the typography
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Hello Hyde and totally, it's so good

i've been staring at it and wondering if I wish the "Hingus" was larger, or perfect as is
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

also personally dig super hard on that Syncro typography, as well as these righteous ladies all over it
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

dang, Sunny Ade. that brings me back. i have probably already mentioned at some point that i saw them in Massachusetts on thir first tour of the states.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

that must have been really good! he seems like one of those "world" crossover hits that didn't let western pop-attention ruin his sound

where did he play?
Avatar 7:20pm hyde:

he played at this great place in Sunderland, right by UMass, where i also saw bands like X, James Brown and Muddy Waters. I think it was 1982 or 1983, right after Juju Music came out.

i think the band felt a little disappointed after only playing a couple hours, since it felt like they were just getting warmed up. but the best part was that it was winter, and after the show in the parking lot it started to snow. the whole band poured out into the lot laughing and playing around. they had never seen snow before, i think.
Avatar 7:21pm hyde:

oh! the place was called The Rusty Nail. It burned down at some point.
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

wild. I love that, and I am jealous you saw it
Avatar 7:35pm Little Danny:

Maestro Flash! Everybody!
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

the waveforms of this recording are totally different looking than anything I've ever seen, I think
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

LD! How's the main brain of the blue flame?
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

really appropriate cover art: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

All I've found on this LP is this sentence: "Daniel Arfib translated with a computer original datas into MUSIC V language, that gives a 'numeric music'"
Avatar 7:43pm geezerette:

This piece reminds me of indigenous Australian dream paintings, it's the didgireedo like reverberations probably.
Avatar 7:43pm hyde:

there's some old cached stuff out there for Daniel Arfib that mentions this LP, but i'm not finding a lot either
Avatar 7:46pm geezerette:

Sunny Ade had a sweet voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm David D:

Greetings Evan and everyone! Love the rhythm of the show...
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! That's really amazing you'd mention that, I was totally flashing back to a scene in "The Last Wave" where the character's house is flooding. That whole movie is about dreamtime – have you seen it? it's amazing

On that note! which of you recommended it to me that night when I was talking about Peter Weir and Picnic at Hanging Rock? I finally saw it a few months back and loved it immensely
Avatar 7:48pm hyde:

@Flash that would be me. i'm glad i didn't oversell it!
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

Pay attention, during this track, to the sound of the guitar: "This was the first juju album to use the Hawaiian guitar. Its effect was so spell-binding I still recall being a part of crowds on a Lagos street September 1977 listening in wonder to Sunny's latest innovation: it was unlike anything he had ever attempted. The long steel guitar solo 10:11ff is a rendering of a folk song by the twins, The Lijadu Sisters, "Iya O, Ololufe Mi" (My Mother, My Lover), but Sunny's guitar takes it right into the spheres!"
Avatar 7:49pm hyde:

i *love* that movie
Avatar 7:49pm geezerette:

Hi Evan, have always wanted to see both films but have never found them! Where are they available?

Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

I thought it was you Hyde! Yeah, it was beautiful. I loved it. Never seen another film with that particular handling of time and sensitivity to air moisture, weird as that may sound
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

Hi David D! So wonderful to see you brother, how goes it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Doug Schulkind:

For some, this record provide an initial entree to "world" music.
Avatar 7:51pm geezerette:

Hyde, whee are Weir's films available?
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

@G: Both are totally crucial, maybe the only Weir movies that I would call crucial (though there are some gaps what I've seen). I know Criterion put them both out, and they stream on some service... I rented them on DVD from netflix/the library
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! Indeed.
Avatar 7:53pm geezerette:

Hmmm, maybe on Filmstruck...
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

This stuff is so intro-level that I skipped over it for years in favor of "harder" stuff... but recently I've been FEELING it
Avatar 7:54pm Little Danny:

@Flash: main brain is starting to spark, lingual flexibility increasing, muscles tensing
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

i probably said this then, but i was taking a film class at UMass and they showed the Last Wave and i went to all three screenings of it the week it showed. the only other movie i did this for was for my gangster film class when they showed Joseph h. Lewis' Gun Crazy.

@geezerette The Last Wave you can stream at iTunes (blecch) and Amazon. Picnic At Hanging Rock all over: Vudu, Youtube, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Gun Crazy is so good
Avatar 7:57pm hyde:

Gun Crazy is probably my favorite noir, if i don't think too much about Out of the Past
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

I've always thought that American Blues & Rock are fundamentally west African, specifically Mali.
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

oooh, never seen Out of the Past
Avatar 7:59pm hyde:

@Flash WHAT!?!?!
Avatar 7:59pm Little Danny:

Just watched the trailer for The Last Wave, looks bonkers-great
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

@Flash you *have* to watch Out of the Past. This one i know i'm not overselling.
Avatar 8:01pm geezerette:

Gun Crazy is insane! Love that film, what an anti-heroine.

Out of the Past also great.
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

I know man, I gotta fix it

If it helps my noir cred, I can talk about how crazy Ride the Pink Horse is
and I've read every Raymond Chandler book 4-7 times
Avatar 8:01pm Little Danny:

@hyde: just noticed that The Last Wave is available on youtube: www.youtube.com...

Not the highest quality but, y'know, it's there in its entirety
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm David D:

Not bad Evan, thanks, and yourself?

And another vote for the Last Wave - I remember it just enough to know that I loved it, need to look for it online...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm David D:

Thanks for the link, Danny!
Avatar 8:03pm hyde:

@LD that actually looks to be decent quality, really
Avatar 8:03pm geezerette:

Just saw Ride the Pink Horse for the first time last year. Insane as well! :D
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Out of the past added to Netflix Q. It's happening. Just gotta actually watch Godard's La Chinoise and get it out the door
Avatar 8:03pm Little Danny:

@Flash, I'd love to hear some of your noir story and novel faves. And then hear an entire Explorers Room set or show based on "noir."
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

Having seen the Criterion of Last Wave, I can say that the quality is eye-popping. every molecule is on screen, and it smells like rain
Avatar 8:04pm geezerette:

Thanks for locating Last Wave!
Avatar 8:05pm hyde:

fwiw, we can connect Gun Crazy and Out of the Past through saying that Peggy Cummins was not only the femme fatale in Lewis' film but was also in Out of the Past director Jacques Torneur's fantastic Night of the Demon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm doctorjazz:

Sonny Ade does indeed have a really sweet voice, and the percolating percussion beneath it highlights it.
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Well I'm sort of a noir novice in a lot of ways, but a giant Chandler enthusiast. I recommend to any person alive his Phillip Marlowe novels. They're all amazing, esp. Long Goodbye and Farewell, My Lovely. And The Little Sister
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Oh that's right! Out of the Past is directed by Jacques Torneur! Nice! I also need to see Night of the Demon, and like all his other flicks basically. he's so great
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

This is some of King Sunny's trippiest stuff here. Super Talking Heads-y
Avatar 8:11pm geezerette:

Hyde, never heard of Night of the Demon! Tournuer is one of my favorite directors.
Avatar 8:12pm hyde:

ack! correction: it's Curse of the Demon, not Night of the Demon
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:13pm geezerette:

Glad you remembered, must find it.
Avatar 8:14pm geezerette:

& Hi DocJazz!
Avatar 8:14pm hyde:

@Flash i don't remember the specifics, but i do sort of remember that when Juju Music hit in he early 80's in the USA, it came with the David Byrne imprimatur
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm doctorjazz:

That's when I first Heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm doctorjazz:

Hi Geezerette!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

totally did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm doctorjazz:

It's very hypnotic....
Avatar 8:17pm geezerette:

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts sounded so radical when it came out.
Avatar 8:18pm hyde:

@geezerette i love that record
Avatar 8:19pm geezerette:

me too Hyde.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

It's as good as can be!
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

I always though parts of Hingus sounded like Alice Coltrane's orchestral stuff
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Hi Rev Rab! You agree?
Avatar 8:38pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

Coelacanth I like that dogface he seems like a good boy
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

huh, i was out in the yard listening to Grunberg and watching the bats catch bugs. it was good soundtrack
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

That seems just about perfect, Hyde
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

i hope very much to be leaving upstate NY behind a soon as possible, so i'm doing my best to take in the good stuff
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

where you headin' Hyde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Listened to Ravi Coltrane talk about his mom Alice here recently:
Avatar 8:47pm coelacanth∅:

Evan, he was a sweetheart ...and sometimes a dick, but he balanced out to still be a sweetheart.
...rest in peace.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

also: GodDAMN is that boy Corbyn gonna grab the PM seat? Somethin' to live for, that
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

@C: Sounds like a dog; sounds like a friend.
Avatar 8:49pm hyde:

@Flash i'm trying hard to get back to the Boston area
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Boy do I miss Boston
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

hoo boy, me too
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

Coolidge Corner theater, the Brattle, the Harvard Film Archive

the arboretum, Forest Hills cemetery, the riverwalk, the book stores and record stores

the Harvard natural history museum, the Fogg, the MFA, the Gardner. man do i miss Boston sometimes
Avatar 9:04pm coelacanth∅:

your synchro system cover is a whole lot more interesting than the cover of the album i have.
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

UK Labor Party kicking ass so far. Looks like rebuff to Brexit! Nice!
Avatar 9:08pm quinn:

lovely show as always
Avatar 9:08pm geezerette:

Hi Coel. Very sweet doggie face, condolences.
Avatar 9:09pm hyde:

@Flash i still go there on weekends to visit the gf, but i'm tired of the weekend commute. need to be there full time.

Harvard Film Archive has this *amazing* surf/psychedelia series this summer/ almost all on 16/35mm. Need to get to these : hcl.harvard.edu...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of dogs, we have a good friend with a pooch named Sven. Sven sees a therapist.
Avatar 9:11pm geezerette:

Oh no, what's Sven's problem?
Avatar 9:11pm coelacanth∅:

hey g - Thanks...it's been a couple a years now. some board conversation prompted me to put it up again, but i don't remember why!
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

@C: that's because they're totally different albums! although, there are variants of your album that have cooler covers. I think King Sunny has at least 4 LPs with Syncro or Synchro in the title
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

Hell yes Geezerette! A step forward for the left in a world where left feet usually just get stubbed toes
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

Quinn in the room! welcome Quinn!
Avatar 9:13pm geezerette:

Coel it's a wonderful photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Behavioral issues. My dog, Luna, is the only dog that Sven plays (mostly) nice with.
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

ha -didn't know that!
i haven't listened to it in few years, but i know it has a track called "synchro feelings" on it. i will come back to these archives.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: wow I want to see that series
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

yeah, his whole syncro thing is a little confusing, there's some overlap and repeat release but some of it is re-recording and building on the original. that particular one on the page is super early and has very little of the guitar pyrotechnics of his best work
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

i love the, how to describe it, "breathing tree" sound on this
Avatar 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks,g! that was when he was pretty young, when he was just falling madly in Love with the big, fluffy golden retriever my sister had. i was holding a golf ball over my head.
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

Some insane guitar on this one, folks!
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, it's a great cover, and clearly older. i was a little disappointed by synchro system, after ju ju music....just a little though.
- "aura" disappointed me a lot more!
Avatar 9:22pm geezerette:

@Doug, a friend of ours had a rather petulant cat with a nasty temper. Because they were west siders they found a pet psychic. Sessions were conducted by phone. The cat meowed,(or not),into the phone and the psychic translated it's grievances to the owners.
I wish I were making this up!
Avatar 9:26pm coelacanth∅:

...but Evan if that sounded very negative it's only because ju ju music blew my mind at the time.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

I really like Aura, it grew on me big time. My favorite is Synchro Series, which has a lot of overlap with Synchro System
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

I always feel bad about sounding negative myself, but I'm just trying to engage critically and be honest about my reactions to things

@G: I love that story, I'm glad you're not making it up

holy moly this hawaiian guitar sort-of quoting Yellow Bird (?)
Avatar 9:29pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

one of my very favorite juju LPs is this guy, "It's Time for Juju Music." I know I've played it before, but I almost played it again tonight. Really trippy, very modern
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

i guess i should give 'em a new listen then. they've been in storage for maybe 20 years.
...i think there's a 4th record too, but i can't remember it right now.
- i do still listen to ju ju music every year or 2 though.
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

This one is the absolute JAM: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:32pm Little Danny:

@Flash: you do a great job of keeping it positive in general
Avatar 9:32pm coelacanth∅:

("ju ju music", the Sunny Adé album)
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

@C: ah yes, that one is basically a gold standard

@LD: thanks, man! Sometimes it's important to really bag on something, but I don't think I do it much
Avatar 9:37pm coelacanth∅:

...but, did this guy informe Sunny Adé? maybe you know, but it's hard for me to tell because Adé had about a billion releases before "ju ju music" that never made it to the states.
this sounds so much like Adé's (1982) album though.
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

No this guy is definitely drafting off Sunny's sound. tho both their discographies go back super far
Avatar 9:41pm coelacanth∅:

okay. but i must hear more of the admiral too now!
Avatar 9:43pm hyde:

i love Ariel Kalma
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

Love when Ariel Kalma ventures into that krautrock sound
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

haha jinx hyde, sort of
Avatar 9:44pm hyde:

more or less!

Avatar 9:48pm Little Danny:

This Kalma piece is wonderful, and totally new to me. I clearly need to get familiar with this comp.
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

I've sort of done this comp buffet-style so I need to get a little more familiar too. but I can say, it's good
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:
