Listener comments!
9:03am : Good morning, Bob and all. Hearing War's Cisco Kid reminds me that I actually used to watch reruns of The Cisco Kid on Saturday morning television.9:07am : Morning!![]()
♥ 9:12am :
Love this track from Sundays! New to me.
Good morning Bob and all you out there.![]()
♥ 9:13am :
(someone could do quite a long set, maybe a show, of dads and children recordings, just sayin'...)![]()
♥ 9:14am :
(think I want to change my name to Rebop)9:16am : hi Bob, always appreciate when you spin Vince![]()
♥ 9:16am :
Harriet Wheeler of Sundays has quite a recognizable voice. I knew it was her right away.9:18am : Vince Guraldi followed by Louis Prima. What a Saturday morning, Bob!![]()
♥ 9:19am :
Nice sounding LP, this Prima.![]()
♥ 9:23am :
Yeah what a lovely Guaraldi track.9:30am : Jimmie Rodgers singing at a time when EVERYTHING he sang had to sound like Honeycomb.![]()
9:37am : Hullabaloo was for the Byrds!9:41am : I like the new Todd CD. Thanks for playing it9:46am : Just curious. Did Baby Dodds style by the time of his his recording reflect any influence of swing drummers? I think the wood block playing -I think they're wood blocks- was a common sound on the King Oliver recordings.9:46am : Man, that new Todd CD looks interesting, a lot of collaborations with some really good people.![]()
♥ 9:52am :
Those early recordings, King Oliver, New Orleans Rhythm Kings, etc, wood blocks had to be used, no bass drums, and the drummer had to be placed far from the band/microphone, from what I recall reading. The acoustic recordings were sensitive, drums that were too close/loud would make the needle jump and ruin the recording. I'm sure drummers heard each other live, though, but who knows what they sounded like with the full kit...![]()
♥ 9:52am :
Morning, Bob and all!![]()
♥ 9:55am :
Half Century of MontereyPop this weekend.
Here, @ least, Laura Nyro is always appreciated.9:55am : Thanks, Doctor.![]()
♥ 9:57am :
Love this Nyro demo!![]()
♥ 9:58am :
How drums mastered to vinyl still a concern now for considering the justifications for the Sgt. Pepper remixes now. (Much less in pre-electric microphone days.)9:59am : What a demo. Perfect version.
Monterey Pop- musically so rich. And a beautiful film, though our boys, Moby Grape, are missing.9:59am : Kevin Whitehead's notes to Atavistic's 2003 reissue of "Spooky Drums," etc., is helpful. KW notes that BD "as a conservator, resisting modern trends." He also reports an inventory of BD's kit at the session. It included a "pedal-equipped bass drum." Good liner notes.10:00am : *"was a conservator..."![]()
♥ 10:02am :
Sure, would read how a musician/band loved a particular engineer/producer's "drum sound" on a recording came out, a recording is basically an artifact, microphones hear differently than ears do, lots of different ways to record.
(the justification for the Sgt Pepper's remaster/reissue seems to me mostly financial...)10:04am : "[A] recording is basically an artifact..." Amen.10:06am : Submarine spitfire is the airplane in the Blitz that saved Great Britain and hence the World. Canarsie is next to Coney Island in Brooklyn - sheesh Bob!10:06am : Brooklyn, Bob...10:07am : He was referring to the feeling of being alone in the studio.![]()
♥ 10:08am :
Well - when I really hear the new Pepper stuff (I'm afraid I can't help them w/ their finances just now) - I'll have more of an opinion. It's not a replacement or anything - it's a Sessions presentation of just that - artifacts. So the opinionated on boths sides (& I) should maybe calm down a bit...![]()
10:11am : they would have been better with just kirwan and green. jeremy spencer kinda bores me.10:11am : Hey Elliot, no offense, but Canarsie is not next to Coney Island. Traveling east from Coney Island, one would pass Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Bergen Beach and Mill Basin before you get to Canarsie.![]()
♥ 10:13am :
True dat, quite a drive from Canarsie to Coney Island.![]()
10:15am : although jeremy did write somebody's gonna get their head kicked in tonight, later made famous by the rezillos. or revillos.10:18am : Bob, I'm reading Small Town Talk, by Barney Hoskyns, all about the town of Woodstock and the musicians that used to live there/haunt it. On page 228, there is a brief mention of a character named Bob "the Brain" Brainen, and his interaction with Karen Dalton. Is this you? I enjoyed the book and learned a lot.10:19am : from Brooklyn and not a path train rider, i got lost going to Prudential Center for the Tom Petty, Joe Walsh show and ended up in Hoboken at an unfriendly bar across from the station... nobody seemed to know anything or wouldn't even talk to me... Luckily the Bouncer was from Brooklyn and straightened me out...![]()
♥ 10:20am :
RRN63-not sure if my comment was upsetting, wasn't meant as such; I've been kicking around whether I "need" to buy the new Pepper for a while now, put it in my Amazon cart, take it out, been conflicted about it as well (those are my current thoughts, just a way to resell it, but I could change my mind any minute). Beatles don't need to sell it again, but record companies never tire of repackaging old stuff, much profit, little expense...
POWELL!!! What a great track!![]()
♥ 10:24am :
Not a thing Dr. As I say - haven't accessed it myself yet to make an opinion. Do I want to hear everything I can from those sessions? Wull - yes. How that's presented is another question.
Poor BudPowell. I wouldn't mind owning everything by him...10:29am : Greetings Bob and fellow Brainiacs from western Michigan, where the sun is shining and the lake breeze is in full effect.10:39am : I caught a set by Steve Noonan from Kulak's Woodshed (a tiny live music space in LA) a month or 2 ago on Concert Window. Jackson Browne's brother Severin hosts a weekly gig there.![]()
♥ 10:47am :
This NRBQ box is great (not news to some, but my belated catch up with the band).![]()
♥ 10:47am :
some is "Update" on vinyl, cool!10:51am : Another great show today, Bob. Thanks so much for your efforts each week.10:56am : This bit of dialogue is repulsive.![]()
10:57am : this is the hipster version of ninety miles an hour down a dead end street.10:58am : Wow, Bacharach? This complements well his "Mexican Divorce," which I deem the greatest pop song of all time.
