Happy Tuesday, Cheyenne and all! I credit Apollo 440 with making me think of their track "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Dub" in seeing the theme today.

Howay Cheyenne. Summer of Dub sounds just the thing this year in sunny Scotland. I loves me some dub.

Howdy friends! Thanks for stoppin' by! I hope more dub puns are made on this comment thread.

Excellent, @Rich, @doctorjazz & @LJFW - keep 'em bubblin! Puns are not required here - just encouraged.

I dub this the beast hour on WFMU.

Dub is one of my favorite editing and proofreading soundtracks. Huge dub mixes welcome for keeping my blood pressure down while trimming thorny sentence structures or digging into gnarly math- or chem-book proofing.

lol thanks JP! I like BEAST hour just as much!

Hiya, Cheyenne, and party people.

@LJFW there's a lot of it on FMA, these are some of my personal faves but this is far from all of it - many of these came from compilations and complete albums. Hope you find some you enjoy! I understand the value of a soothing soundtrack for stressful work!

Howdy Sem!

No puns, but entries from OED, for which there are 13 main ones for "dub." Entry 7 reads, "A re-mixed version of a piece of recorded music, often with the melody line removed and including various special effects, which was developed in Jamaica and is popular esp. in reggae n. and other black music." One of the supporting quotes reads, "1977 Sounds 3 Dec. 22 The first dub record was ‘Travelling Man’ by the Techniques." Other entries have fun associations, whether or not they are linguistically connected. E.g., the first entry reads, "A muddy or stagnant pool; a small pool of rain water in a road; a puddle." And the third, " A beat of a drum; the sound of a drum when beaten. Cf. dub-a-dub n."

I want to find an affordable copy of the Trojan box of dub rarities.
Avatar 3:18pm
Cheyenne:

@Dean that's super interesting! I am always into the etymology of genre terms, and related entries are always fascinating too. A mud puddle! Wow.

Could listen all day. Should be a summer dub stream.

That's hilarious, and kinda cool, too. Looks like it's more than one guy supporting Guillaume. Cyril Gay, Valentin Portron, Valentin Portron, and Tsegorium House Band.

Clever pun: John Locke Groove ends with a faux-locked groove.
  3:28pm
Dean:

Oops, gave M. Portron double props.

@Dean, not sure which Trojan box you are referring to, Discogs has one for sale

@Dean - so many collabs happen on FMA amongst the artists here - it's great. Last year there was some game of Exquisite Corpse that resulted in this album from the "Freeharmonic Orchestra" freemusicarchive.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

Nicely hip-hoppy, this Eter Dub. Reminds me of the MF DOOM instrumental loops or bits of the Ghost Dog soundtrack.

Freeharmonic Orchestra looks great, too. Dadaists had the right idea in some respects. Somebody ought to do a Dada Dub.

It's a sound of summer! There used to be a big reggae & dub music fest in my hometown every summer, and I think it made some Pavlovian association in my animal brain.

a bit more, but not super-expensive...

Dean, the Dada daddies were so funny. It helps to remember how young they were. Schwitters totally did.

That's it. Hmmm, might have to snag that.

@geezerette: Did you see the Hannah Hoch show at LACMA a few years ago? Was pretty marvelous. I was thinking about her just a couple days ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
listener james from westwood:

Weirdly, I first learned about dub in William Gibson's "Neuromancer," sophomore year of college. Members of an orbital colony of Rastafarians listened to it. Didn't actually hear it until I began listening to FMU.

Got it, @doctorjazz. Thanks for the sleuthing.

It does, @geezerette. That exhibit gave me a fresh glimpse of Dada, for sure.

Heh, "a few years ago" was 1997. LA Times had a story on June 22 of that year about the Hoch exhibit.
