Greetings, Freeformists! Stay tuned for an interview/dj set from special guest Derek Walmsley, editor of The Wire Magazine!
  9:14pm steve from gberg:

damn, this is beautiful.
Avatar 9:30pm northguineahills:

Kurt Gottschalk also writes for the Wire.
Avatar 9:30pm Marcel M:

Avatar 9:31pm northguineahills:

Jaja, spidermank, straight up perfect description of a Blumin show (Spacemen 3 being too coherant).
Avatar 9:34pm spidermank:

@northguineahills- glad its not only me who noticed - 8)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irwin predates Ken, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Daniel Blumin:

Hello, Marcel! nghills, indeed Kurt and Dave both do! Irwin certainly does, Rev!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Daniel Blumin:

Spacemen 3 were/are a favorite! I was scheduled to do an interview with them back in 1989 or thereabouts when they didn't actually make it to the USA! Dammit!
Avatar 9:45pm spidermank:

believe it or not spacemen 3 did some gigs in there short career - I vaguely remember seeing them but i cant remember what dimension i am refering to

USP = unique selling proposition
Avatar 9:51pm northguineahills:

It reminds me, I need to renew my Wire subscription. I've read it cover-to-cover since '96. Due to some personal/family setbacks, I've only advanced to April 2016.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm melinda:

hi Daniel and bluminauts
Avatar 9:54pm northguineahills:

it was when I getting out of my indie-rock dungeon, and exploring music of all genres, and was the only rag that vibed w/ me in that direction. Three years later, I found a tinny WFMU stream, and the rest was history.
  10:01pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Daniel Blumin:

Greetz, melinda, Unc M, Jake, spidermank! Anyone listening can enter to win the digital Wire subscription by emailing me before 11:45pm or so!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm melinda:

This is really nice.
Avatar 10:10pm northguineahills:

I would say this Yearnin Kru is out of place for Planet Mu, but Mike Paradinas has visited this territory many times.
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

I'd rather someone new discover The Wire. All signs point that I'll probably get the job I desire, and I like having the print & digital together. The print for reading while traveling or reading at a bar, the digital for research (seriously folks, if you're into researching music of any genre, at any level or complexity, the Wire digital subscription is invaluable).
Avatar 10:17pm northguineahills:

This Spatial is new to me...

bonus, spatial analysis is what I do (geographer)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm steve:

fan freakin tastic stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Daniel Blumin:

Glad you're enjoying, steve! ngh, a geographer, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm melinda:

@steve I now know your avatar is a four-eared cat but I always sort of assumed you photoshopped devil horns on your own kitty.
Avatar 10:35pm northguineahills:

true.. true, Daniel. Got a MA for my trouble. I only spent 16 years in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, outside of crappy few weeks/months tech jobs or 6 month /1 year gov't jobs forced me to relocate where the cost of living is more forgiving and a job more rewarding while my wife still is in our apt in Bushwick. Hope to make it back to nyc before the end of the summer. (my parents had some health issues as well)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm steve:

would if i could melinda! though id sooner give them halos probably.
Avatar 10:36pm northguineahills:

@melinda & steve: I never noticed the horn/ears in the avatar (I won't go into the etymological cognates or ear or horn).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm melinda:

Halos would be cute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm cklequ:

My cat (RIP) gets a halo.
Avatar 10:39pm northguineahills:

I had a friend back in '97 that was in a good band that received negative review in one of those "alternative" music magazines that so affected him that he quit music altogether, which was a shame, b/c I dug the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm melinda:

@cklequ that's sweet. I'd like a pic of my deceased cat with one, too. Devil horns are funny, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Jack Mello:

Just got home, look forward to hearing this whole interview on the archives, cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm cklequ:

@melinda - She was a whiny little monster, and drove me nuts. But 6 months after she died I still walk through the door expecting to see her. That's deserving of a halo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Daniel Blumin:

ngh, coming for a visit you mean? Hola, Jack & cklequ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm melinda:

@cklequ I love cats but they can be a pain in the ass, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm joe mulligan:

what a great interview Daniel! love to hear the complexities of writing reviews for mostly abstract musics.
Avatar 10:48pm northguineahills:

@Daniel: yeah, I still have an apartment, might as well use it. Plus, I need to move the rest of my stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm joe mulligan:

oh and btw did anyone see Yves Tumor live in BK at Villains this winter? that guy did a wild show, and it was practically industrial ambient rap. nothing like the PAN studio release but pretty primal and fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Daniel Blumin:

Thanks, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Daniel Blumin:

I missed it, Joe, but will try to see it next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm cklequ:

I let my Wire subscription run out a year or so ago.
Gotta fix that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm steve:

i haven't picked up a Wire is 2-3 years but this charming man has convinced me to give it another go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm melinda:

I've never read Wire but maybe I should.
Avatar 11:03pm northguineahills:

There's a somewhat symbiotic relationship b/tn The Wire and WFMU. If you dig WFMU, there's a good chance you'll dig them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm cklequ:

The Wire is worth it just for the free discs and downloads.
(you can get the old discs for 50 cents on discogs, but you didn't hear that from me.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm steve:

i feel like not long ago there was still a 10+ year old copy of the Wire on the 4th floor with Jackie O Motherfucker on the cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm joe mulligan:

@cklequ yes! when I moved from SF to NJ I left a whole stack of those CDs at the local library. so great to hear them with each issue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Daniel Blumin:

Email me to get in on the digital subscription contest before 11:45, y'all. Email at the bottom of the playlist page!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's so weird that you seem like an X-Mutant when you try to tell people they don't have to stick to Genres or commercial radio for Music - like having to tell them they don't have to eat @ just McDonald's for food: Really?? I have to convince you of this?...Just stop going...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Ike:

Aw, hell, I'm missing Lightning Bolt at Pioneer Works. I had no idea that was happening until just now! Oh well, this show is just about as good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Daniel Blumin:

Good to see you, Ike!
Avatar 11:40pm northguineahills:

My wife is at Lightning Bolt. I'm so jealous, just got off the phone.
Avatar 11:45pm northguineahills:

Nice interview, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Daniel Blumin:

Thanks, ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Ike:

Thanks Daniel!
  11:49pm JakeGould:

Excellent show to listen to while sorting photos, Daniel!
Avatar 11:51pm northguineahills:

Oh, and thanks to The Wire, when I was unemployed, they gave me 50% off the subscription price after I explained. They are good people.

I've had dinner w/ Robin Ribaud (and camped at the Wave Farm). Amazing musician and a great person of the universe.
Avatar 11:52pm northguineahills:

Sukdev is also a talented writer.
