Ridgewood Radio features concert recordings by adventurous bands and experimental musicians and restored archival tapes from private and institutional collections captured at venues large and small across the five boroughs of New York. It is produced by David Weinstein and Outpost Artists Resources operating out of the Ridgewood section of Queens, NY, where you'll find more yellow bricks than on the road to Oz and the cemetery of your choice is never more than a few blocks from home.

Nice Sakamoto opening

Got stuck in my head!

northguineahills:

Now it's stuck in mine. I got this album as a promo while djing at Tonic a lifetime ago. I need to rediscover it, thanks!

Doug Schulkind:

You sound so much... louder. Almost is if you were just down the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
fred:

The fact that there is a Sakamoto record from the 80s that I don't have is unnerving. Or upsetting, whichever is worse, but still mild

How do, David and Ruth!

Hey Ridgewoodians!

I once attended a performance in which Matt Ostrowski played a vacuum cleaner on an original number he called "Sigmund Freud Was Right, I Want to Fuck My Mother." Ah, halcyon days of college.

Welcome home, David! I'm using some of you in my show today at 5. Use me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
weinstein:

Use me, baby. Use me up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
fred:

@Doug: do you plan some field recordings from Maine, or even a live show from there?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I have dreamed of maybe one day broadcasting live from a funky Internet café in Bar Harbor, Maine. But that dream will have to wait at least another year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
weinstein:

Ostrowski's early project was the duo Ghana Dog. He was naughtier then.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

Matt and I both did radio at Oberlin. He wanted to do something called a "freeform" show, and nobody (full disclosure: including me) knew what to do with him. I was the jazz department director and Matt's show got stuck in my department, because... jazz. For years after that when we were both at WFMU, Matt would tease me about that. I took it like the stand-up dweeb I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
weinstein:

Quick hey to James and D-Jazz and NGH too. I'm a touch more scrambled than usual today. Maybe its the 100 degrees in here.
Avatar 3:25pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever, Wed. 5-7pm ET):

I've squeezed myself into many radio departments in my time! P.S. Geez this is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm

If you are curious about this guitarist Liberatore, who I think is a great pairing with MO, his own projects are Ashen Figure and Una Lux.

You can't tell the Matthews from the Matteos without a scorecard.

I could go for some chitlins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm

Liking this Charmaine Lee set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
weinstein:

C Lee plays with good people too, Nate Wooley, Joe Morris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm

I'm feverish but will try to stay until Kenzo's show. I'm on vacation, and I basically always get sick when on vacation. Except for my yearly Sonic Protest break, but I guess that's religious observance
Avatar 3:52pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever, Wed. 5-7pm ET):

@fred: David and my shows definitely enhance fevers.

It's been two-three years since I've heard David First, but this is a new direction from what I've heard before, and I like it!

@Kenzo: I'm switching between shivering and sweating. Your show should make that feel appropriate

David First has been doing drones for a community acupuncture session!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
fred:

@Webhamster Henry: drone as is sound or as in hovering bot? It kinda changes the picture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
weinstein:

Difference tones!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

Audio drones ... the word has been appropriated by the Military Industrial Peeping Tom Complex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
fred:

Well, Peeping Tom is also the name of a pretty cool Belgian dance/theater/whatever company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
fred:

But I live in Eliane Radigue's country, so I know how the word's stealing feels. She's one of the last pioneers left now that Pierre Henry is gone, maybe the last period
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Webhamster Henry:

Laurie Spiegel is still around, she's a youthful 71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm

Ellen Fullman, Arnold Dreyblatt. LaMonte.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Webhamster Henry:

And Niblock, fer drone's sake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
weinstein:

Phill! Oy. Me bad. OK open the floodgates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
fred:

Ellen Fullman did a pretty amazing set at Sonic Protest a year ago, walking through a church playing her long string instrument
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Webhamster Henry:

I just missed her in Montreal. I want to set up a long string instrument around here in a mine, her website give good instructions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
weinstein:

That's the kind of place to see here for sure. Though she rarely plays anywhere without fabulous acoustics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
fred:

Niblock also played there, as did Tony Conrad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
fred:

Acoustics can be challenging in that church, but even though it's quite recent by French standards for these, it's like 500 years old
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
weinstein:

One has to play to the room, can't just dump your standard set into any joint (or architectural treasure) but T Conrad, Niblock, Fullman, would all tune to the room! When that happens, magic can follow!

I think Niblock was the best, though part of the church was cordoned off for renovations when Fullman played there. Wandering and playing the church was quite a big part of my enjoyment of Niblock's set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
northguineahills:

Dok is a first class special person of the universe. I was going through a rough time w/ my wife and showed up at his place during a live performance, and he shoved a moog, some strings, a contact mic in front of me, and said, "play". He even let me stay the night on his couch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
weinstein:

Nice to hear, Fred. Thanks for all the thoughts today, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm

Dok and that crew are amazing. Special stuff, heart, courage. Rare. Wish peace to all.
