The Voice of Suka:
Maria Pomianowska and her ensemble ReBorn bring extinct Polish fiddles back to life!

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Maria Pomianowska, a classically trained Polish cellist, found that diving into fiddle traditions around the world freed her from classical music's constraints.

But her explorations also brought her right back home, where she discovered the suka, a Polish fiddle that had completely disappeared.

It turns out the suka has a lot in common with fiddles Maria plays from other countries. So with the help of Ewa Daligh and master luthier Andrzej Kuczkowski, she brought this forgotten instrument back to life.

Now Maria has a beautiful new album out with her three-fiddle (and percussion) ensemble ReBorn (featuring reconstructed sukas from Biłgoraj and Mielec, Poland and a resurrected fiddle from Plock, Poland as well). The album, called The Voice of Suka, is on Poland’s For Tune label.

Maria and ReBorn made their US debut as part of the prestigious Lincoln Center Festival earlier this week. And this Wednesday (August 2), they’ll give a free live-video-streamed concert at the Kennedy Center in DC. Maria and ReBorn also will tour the Midwest in mid-September and early October.
