I see james is keeping it Boston...

listener james from westwood:

Went to school up there, Boston College 87–91, so I've got a teeny bit of experience. Haven't been there in way too long. Expect much of what I knew from back then is rebuilt and unaffordable.

@James I'm out in the townie-end of Somerville, which is still pretty real and affordable, but otherwise you're mostly right (though Allston, while overpriced, is comfortingly resistant to attempts to clean it up).

IIRC one of my fellow copy editors is up in Somerville and enjoying it a lot. Good to see Allston's holding out on such efforts.

Are we still talking about Boston? I lived on Causeway Street in an illegal loft 30 years ago. We had to throw our trash out by pitching it from the fire escape into Dunkin' Donuts dumpster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
The Oscar:

@drr That is the most Boston thing I've ever heard. Years ago I lived in an apartment in Brookline where the landlord had some sort of falling out with the sanitation department and we had to pile our garbage in the foyer for his handyman to collect. A few years later it was gutted by a mysterious fire. Now it's luxury condos.

No offense, but every time I've visited Boston, it seemed like the Florida of the northeast. I enjoyed visiting my friends there, but considering how much culture emanates there, I must have always been unlucky. (I'm originally from and currently live in FL)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm
drr:

The Oscar: yeah, this was right across the street from Boston Garden, above McDonald's and a karate school. We had the elevated train tracks running by our window like the Blues Brothers. I think it's some kind of modern plaza now.

Doug, you need to talk to your gastroenterologist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
The Oscar:

@drr Yeah, they changed that over a little after I moved into the city-- I actually kinda liked the old raised platform. I think the McDonalds might still be there, though.
Avatar 3:06pm

UM, true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

Here in genteel New England, the dump is called "the transfer station."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
Uncle Michael:

I gotta go make a transfer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
drr:

Ha, my Boston house mate was a bike messenger, and one snowy day he came home and said "I took a dump in a puddle." Before I could ask what he did that for, someone explained it was bike messenger talk for slipping and falling.

My mom would keep a Mose Allison tape in the car at all times. His voice pretty much always brings me back to my childhood.
