This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening Explorers! Happy to be back
Avatar 6:57pm Flash Strap:

tonight's show starts with the vegetables and gets groovier as it goes, just fyi
  7:01pm Jeff g.:

I am REALLY excited for this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm doctorjazz:

Hi Flash, welcome back!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hello Jeff G! Me too
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Doc Jazz! Wonderful to see you
Avatar 7:03pm hyde:

well, it's about damn time! welcome back
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

No kidding! Thanks Hyde, great to see you
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Love the Barrons
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

i always crack up during Forbidden Planet when they play the Krell music
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

it's pretty funny, it's exactly the same sound as everything else in the movie
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

This is pretty much the thesis statement of the episode, courtesy the incomparable Anaïs Nin
Avatar 7:11pm Little Danny:

Welcome back Flash!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Hey LD! Thanks brother! missed this place, missed being your lead-in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm listener james from westwood:

Been in since the git-go but enjoying the Bebe tracks!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

My favorite image of Nin: theredlist.com...
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

Listener James! Great to have you in the room!
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

the theme of the show obviously is women & electronic music, but there's actually an almost unbroken string of power couples tonight. Priscilla & her husband Barton tend to work together, and this is on an album credited to both of them, but I think this track is all her. That's her above, 2nd from left
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

EXCELLENT cover art: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

and that is Joan La Barbara, of course, draped in tape, 3rd from left
Avatar 7:34pm hyde:

this is like Day of the Dolphin
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

interspliced with one of those weird tape recordings of exorcisms
Avatar 7:36pm geezerette:

'Allo, Evan and buddies!
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette!
Avatar 7:38pm Little Danny:

oh hell yeah Broadcast
Avatar 7:40pm Little Danny:

Got you on while I pull my shit together. This is already a brilliant show
Avatar 7:41pm hyde:

love Broadcast
Avatar 7:43pm Little Danny:

Hi hyde! Of course you do.
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

hiya, LD! don't want to shock you, but i also like Stereolab...
Avatar 7:48pm Little Danny:

Haha, me too. I was just listening to them today in fact. Peng!
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

oooh, that's a good one. tho i think Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements is my fave
Avatar 7:51pm Little Danny:

Ohhhh yes. The first 'Lab record I ever bought and still my fave. One of these evenings I'll roll out for "Jenny Ondioline."
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

It's sort of sad you guys but I never could get into Stereolab. Fortunately, I have a love of Broadcast to ease the loss
Avatar 7:55pm Little Danny:

Flash, I totally understand your ambivalence about focusing on the work, apart, of women in this context. To me at least it's clear that you're not ghettoizing or diminishing anything
Avatar 7:56pm hyde:

fine. you are not allowed to join our Stereolab fan club. it came with stickers!
Avatar 7:56pm hyde:

huh, Little Danny's response seems perhaps more mature than mine.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Thanks man, just had to say it to ward off the evil spirits of self-doubt
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

This may be, genuinely be, the greatest song of all time
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

One of my favorite eras, weirdly romantic and every-day glamorous.
Avatar 7:58pm Little Danny:

Completely understand
Avatar 7:58pm Little Danny:

And now I've gotta find some Stereolab for this evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm doctorjazz:

Gotta run, great sounds, thanks Flash!
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

hate to see you go Doc! Just as we're gettin' hot! Thanks and see ya 'round friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm doctorjazz:

Wasn't there some Peackock/Bley connection? (he asks as he's getting ready to brave the highway)
Avatar 8:03pm hyde:

supposedly Bravo did a one hour doc on Paul Bley in the late 90's co-produced with Arte. (which is amusing/sad given what Bravo is now). as far as i know, you can't find it anywhere.
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

yeah they were pretty intense collaborators in the late 60s/early 70's, married for a time. I think she pretty much wrote all his stuff from '64 on as well
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

someone should do a doc just on this period, the Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show period
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

hi chums
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:06pm Little Danny:

hiya Melinda
Avatar 8:07pm hyde:

yay, melinda
Avatar 8:07pm geezerette:

Hey Melinda, ladies night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm doctorjazz:

I thought they were married; Wikipedia didn't mention it.
Trying to leave (you're making it hard, Flash, hehehehe!
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Paul Bley during this time basically IS Annette Peacock, to the point where it annoys me to enter his name in the artist field on this track
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

huh, they were definitely married, weird wiki would omit that! The hell!

I live to make it hard for you to leave Doc!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

If you remember a few shows back, I played a long track by Bley&Peacock called M.J. This is a variation on that composition
Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

doctorjazz, i think you were skimming too fast on your way out the door. the Annette Peacock bio on wiki mentions that she was married to Paul Bley after Gary Peacock...
  8:18pm MrFab:

it's Ladies Night? Cool it guys, the chicks are here! *smooths back hair, checks breath*

Speaking of da ladies, any Laurie Spiegel on deck for tonight? Not sure if one of those pics is her. Or Wendy Carlos?
  8:19pm doctorjazz:

Could be, I searched Bley and Peacock together, didn't look more. Sick of NPR depressing news, going to keep the show on with the phone app. No more posting, though...
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Mr. Fab! always so good to see you friend. No Laurie or Wendy tonight, but I'll probably get into both of them next week, when we'll do more astral traveling. This'll be a multi-show series. Love Laurie Spiegel SO MUCH
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

It's so great how she runs her voice through a moog, just turning it up in the mix until unintelligibility
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

after this, she took a 6-year hiatus. when she cam back, she was still devoted to pushing the songform to its edges but there's not so much in the way of synthesizers, so we'll just hear one track from her next album before we move on. That track: IS GOOD
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

  8:40pm Jeff g.:

Bowie was into Annette. Wanted get to join his band, I think. Maybe Garson was a connection...?
  8:41pm Jeff g.:

(pardon iPhone mangling of syntax)
Avatar 8:42pm hyde:

Gary Peacock
Avatar 8:42pm northguineahills:

hyde beat me! (I knew it wasn't Annette).
  8:43pm Jeff g.:

The cover of AP's Been on the Streets Too Long is...amazing.
Avatar 8:46pm geezerette:

Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

Love "Magic is Afoot" Buffy recording.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Ah, thank you Hyde

Hi NGH, wonderful to see you again! and also what do you mean

It is indeed Jeff G. She's pretty damn bold

Me too, G, it's so amazing
Avatar 8:51pm hyde:

huh, going back a few weeks but i'm packing (don't ask, my life is a hideous nightmare) and i just realized i have a copy of Pauper Brawler and Slanderer by Amos Tutuola that i never read. which i guess is why i brought it four years ago, though did i read it in the interim? well, um, nope. but it's going with me to the new place. maybe this time.
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

tell me you are not moving again Hyde, I'm dying at the thought
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Magic is a Foot
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

sigh. it's true. had to get a month-to-month here in upstate NY as i can't seem to get a job in Boston where the gf lives and did not want to renew the lease on this crap cabin at a 12.5% rent markup. hope to get this all cleared up before winter and go back to Mass. if we get to November and i evince increasingly erratic behavior, you'll all know why.
Avatar 8:59pm northguineahills:

Flash said "something Peacock", and he already mentioned Annette, so, the only other Peacock musician I can think of is Gary, (which is why Annette got that last name).
Avatar 8:59pm hyde:

@ngh i like how she kept it
Avatar 9:00pm geezerette:

Damn! Best of luck,Hyde! Just persist.
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

Godspeed Hyde, that sucks. I wish the best for you in this wicked world, may we never have to move again unless we want to, none of us

Oh, indeed NGH, sorry to mis-take you
Avatar 9:01pm northguineahills:

@hyde: at least you didn't spend 9 months couch surfing w/ family members and friends in FL. (I should have bailed out of nyc almost 3 years after my last real job before I ran out of my money) At least I'm employed now.
Avatar 9:02pm hyde:

@geezerette thank you. i'm trying. the state of the union aint helping ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Beloved Flash Strap!
Avatar 9:03pm quinn:

Avatar 9:04pm hyde:

@ngh thanks, man, & i know you have had similar travails. appreciated.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Wonderful Man Doug!

Dear Comrade Quinn!
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

It's true Hyde. A world wide problem. Try to stay positive and awake and you'll be the one who sees the opportunity to seize.
Rootin' for you.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

On a future show we'll hear more Delia, her "solo" stuff, but man I love hearing her incredible sounds applied to a more structured psychedelic context
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

love that door-shutting sound they keep working into this
Avatar 9:11pm northguineahills:

I'd imagine upstate NY is more palatable then Jacksonville. Thankfully I landed on my feet in a decent place. Just ran into friends of friends on the street.
Avatar 9:12pm geezerette:

NGH, and you more than earned it.
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

jacksonville always seemed pretty awful to me, but I've only visited... the St. John river is beautiful though
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

I love love love this track
Avatar 9:14pm Little Danny:

Congrats, NGH. You'll find your way and your people
Avatar 9:15pm northguineahills:

I always group United States of America w/ White Noise, similar sound, and similar time period.

Back in 1999, a friend of mine found 30 United States of America cassettes at a Big Lots in FL. He bought them all for his record store, which is where I got my cassette (before I found an LP version).

Jacksonville is awful (the people), naturally beautifully, but awful. You'd think a town that size would have more going on. Sure there are a tiny handful of people trying to make things happen, but it seems like a loosing battle.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

glad to hear you're in a good spot, NGH, truly
Avatar 9:15pm northguineahills:

Thanks everyones!
Avatar 9:16pm hyde:

@ngh yeah, man. me too
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

@ngh, yeah my grandparents live there, and that's pretty much always been my impression. Florida's just a rough place to live and have a soul in, I think

CRAZY to imagine those tapes, on tape, at a Big Lots
Avatar 9:18pm northguineahills:

Gainesville is an island of culture adrift in a sea of insanity.
  9:21pm doctorjazz:

Great sounds!
Avatar 9:21pm hyde:

@ngh i dunno if you remember, but i got offered a job in Gainesville at the same time as i got offered my current NY gig. would have taken it if it hadn't been so far from my gf. when i went there i thought that the goeography and natural areas were really kind of cool, but for a guy who grew up in New England it all seemed really flat!
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

Doc Jazz is back! Hey pal! thanks!
Avatar 9:23pm northguineahills:

Gainesville is the only area of peninsular florida that was above water the last time it was flooded. There are elevations approaching 90 ft above sea level!
Avatar 9:24pm quinn:

i love this
Avatar 9:24pm hyde:

@ngh haha
Avatar 9:25pm northguineahills:

@hyde: that's why I stayed in NYC as long as I did, and it more then less ruptured our relationship (due to my lack of income).
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

oh me too quinn, it's hypnotic and terribly moving. really well edited
  9:28pm doctorjazz:

Hadn't left, but I couldn't post while driving. Almost pulled over during the Buffy St Marie, though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm melinda:

Sea was cool.
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

always love being your driving buddy doc, it's a true honor
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

@ngh yeah, i get it. it's a tough call.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: the end of Sea, everytime, completely devastates me
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

I hope we can all agree, that was one of the coolest tracks ever
Avatar 9:31pm northguineahills:

That Delia Derbyshire/Barry Bermage track reminded me sonically of that Robert Ashley track that included the taped recounting of an abductee.
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

ooh, i want to hear that
Avatar 9:33pm quinn:

it gave me a sort of deux filles / un-funny dion mcgregor vibe
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

haha I thought of Dion McGregor too! he really freaks me out, actually
  9:35pm doctorjazz:

This USA is very cool!
  9:37pm doctorjazz:

Ngh and Hyde, hoping all settles down well for you both!
Avatar 9:37pm hyde:

@doctor jazz thank you!
Avatar 9:40pm hyde:

i am just now remembering that i think i got the Emerald Web CD for a pledge to this show. that may also have just been put into a box ;)
Avatar 9:45pm Little Danny:

perfectly placed United States of America track
Avatar 9:46pm geezerette:

It's been a great show,Evan.
  9:46pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Flash!
Avatar 9:47pm quinn:

thanks for the show, missed it the past few weeks!
Avatar 9:47pm northguineahills:

Gainesville was supposed to have a march this weekend by whats-his-nazi-face-I-refuse-to-commit-to-memory but The City of Gainesville denied the permit and the University denied his permit to give a 'lecture'.
Avatar 9:48pm Little Danny:

Oh yes Broadcast. Thanks Evan!
  9:49pm doctorjazz:

They're too scary, they have license to be themselves now...
Avatar 9:49pm northguineahills:

Still miss Trish, way too soon!
Avatar 9:51pm Little Danny:

@ngh: me too
Avatar 9:52pm Little Danny:

Doesn't get much attention but man I love the Witch Cults LP
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

You did, Hyde!

Thanks Danny, Geezerette, Quinn! I missed it too

@NGH: what an insane gut punch that was when she was gone
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

I think it's my favorite, LD (maybe)
Avatar 9:53pm northguineahills:

So, can anyone tell me if the Broadcast album "The Berberian Sound Studio" was making a reference to Cathy Berberian?
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

And remember: Iconoclasm is Good, folks
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

All! Won't you please join us as we shift into a different place? wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:55pm northguineahills:

LD: I will duck out to tend to some business, but I'll be back before the end.
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

I don't think it is, but I didn't see the movie it's a soundtrack to, so I'm not sure. Actually, I haven't heard that record yet... is Trish on it, or is it totally post-Trish?
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

@ngh love her voice
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

she really does what she's doing so perfectly it's astonishing
Avatar 9:59pm hyde:

thanks for the show, it was great
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:
