Tuesday is Tony day! I'll be up in Portland this weekend slinking through the vinyl stores.

Heya, Carmichael! Be sure not to miss Little Axe, Musique Plastique, Exiled, and Crossroads. Those are my faves....

One of these days I should do a show with nothing but tapes hiss -- just blank tapes, or the beginning and end of tapes.

By the way, Tony, I'm digging the Spain marathon premium. I have family by marriage in the north there, so I'm always interested in non mainstream Spanish cultural output.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

So, can anyone ID the LP underneath today's cassettes? It's a not too well known album from a well-known British singer with a big hit in the '60s and a bunch of great proggy albums. He is still touring (was in NYC not too long ago).
Avatar 12:18pm

Hola, Sem!

What was Marcel Marceau's mime type?
Avatar 12:46pm

Sounds like there were around six people in the audience for this Ende Shneafliet concert, judging from the applause. Perhaps it wasn't open to the public, but just recorded for broadcast.

@Dean: I read Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos". He has a way of explaining everything in lay terms w/o dumbing it down. And, if you're so inclined, you can delve into the math section (although he advises that most skip it).

Thanks geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm

Is it true that Staalplaat Recs treated their artists crappily (as in, not paying what they said they would, changing albums and release schedules, etc)?
Avatar 1:12pm

Good west coast morning, everyone!

No more exclamation points from me. Maybe smiley faces though, can't jusy go cold turkey.
Avatar 1:13pm

@ NGH: Not sure.....

Di Stefano is the name of a famous soccer player in Europe during the '50s & '60s. Not sure this is about him, mind you.

Dean:

@ngh: I'm reading Mara Beller's Quantum Dialogue, which is not dumbed-down, but not hardcore science, either. It's history, dappled with math. I've also read a handful of articles published in science journals, but again focusing on history rather than concepts per se.

@Dean, that's like two podcasts I follow, the History of English (the linguistics) and the history of philosophy w/o any gaps. Both dip into the material, but the focus is on the history of each subject.

...and thanks for the record-store hit list up there, TC.

  1:26pm

A really interesting history of philosophy, albeit sideways, is Randall Collins's Sociology of Philosophies.
Avatar 1:26pm

Some of those stores are also good for finding rare cassettes, incidentally ... particularly Little Axe.

Rev. Turnip Druid:

sadly, I missed the SOLID SPACE tape -- Can't tell if it looks familiar, or of course we all xeroxed covers onto paper that color at the time. And cybermen were plentiful...

There are vinyl boots of the Solid Space tape around. Perhaps you've seen one of those?
Avatar 🥁 1:38pm

I could be thinking of the first tape by Stolen Government Binder Clip, but different robots. They coulda been bigger 'n the beatles...!

Thanks for the book suggestions. I read Hawking's Brief History of Time and became intrigued by the concepts.
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

By the by, both "Arbeit Macht Klang" and the Ende Shneafliet tape come with large booklets, not pictured in my photo.
  1:49pm
Dean:

Sorry. I'm in a Carlin-esque mood, I guess. "Large booklets"?
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, large compared to yer normal cassette insert. They are too gigantic to fit into the picture frame.
Avatar 1:54pm
Tony Coulter:

They come in a plastic bag holding both booklet and tape.
