The standard is that the pre-penultimate syllable, which would be the first syllable in that word. I have no idea why the "official" pronunciation is accepted. Growing up in Pittsburgh, we used to say chick-Ay-duh. I could not, for the life of me, remember the word syllable... I've always wanted to see the Wharton Esherick house...

	11:00am BronwynB: interesting that in english the antepenultimate is the stressed syllable. i'd never heard that but it explains the way the british (who invented the language and are always a bit more "proper") pronounce things. in spanish it's the penultimate syllable unless there's an accent.

This is the Modern World with Trouble welcomes Jennifer Higgie, author of The Other Side, a Story of Women in Art and the Spiritual World. Jennifer Higgie is an Australian writer living in London. She wrote fabulously for Frieze Magazine for over 2 decades, is a curator and hosted the podcast Bow Down. In honor of The Other Side coming out in paperback in the US, Jennifer and trouble will discuss women artists, seances and spiritualism.

	11:00am BronwynB: interesting that in english the antepenultimate is the stressed syllable. i'd never heard that but it explains the way the british (who invented the language and are always a bit more "proper") pronounce things. in spanish it's the penultimate syllable unless there's an accent.
