Hi everyone. "Global warming" is scientifically accurate: globally, atmospheric and ocean temperatures are rising, at a rate unprecedented in the geological record, and at a rate the overwhelming majority of scientists agree is influenced by human activity since the dawn of the industrial age, or (some say) since the age of exploration. Some say "climate change" is a more anodyne (i.e. more corporate friendly) term. It's scientifically demonstrated (basic science) that global warming makes storms like Harvey pick up more moisture. Whether global warming brings more frequent storms or whether it influenced this particular storm's holding pattern is less certain. I have heard "climate chaos" used more recently, or even "climate collapse." Whether we like it or not, Old Dave is right: we're in (we and our children and grandchildren are in) for a rough ride. If only politicians could do their jobs and help us plan ahead. We need a new kind of politics, a new relation between the different sectors of society, a new way of thinking about our relationship with the planet.

Question for the biking crowd of either gender...isn't naked biking a bit rough on the ol' nether regions? If I was a guy I wouldn't want my dangly bits sliding around on the seat, and as a woman I can't imagine what kind of chafing I'd get....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11am

I can't imagine riding naked to be honest. OUCH! lol Maybe if i was at a pond and there was ramp to water and swim lmao

George made a great point: context and audience are crucial. In one conversation, "climate change" might be the better phrase, in another "global warming." In another conversation again, yet another (perhaps yet to be invented) phrase. And maybe we should be using completely different language, in light of (and not to make light of) the suffering in Texas and Louisiana and Mumbai right now. It's all about the rhetoric and the occasion: different strokes for different folks. Great exchange: thanks for having me on! And thanks for suggesting I call, @Dave

Here's some poetry for you all (to sign off). From "Eclogue" by Ed Roberson, a former New Jersey poet:

"We in the morning
catch, from the train, in the green garbage runoff,
sight of white herons and the cormorants.
When they're there in the evening, we safely
assume the world hasn't gone anywhere;
a take of bearings the same the next morning
when we'd see the lit towers on the island
we were headed for we see now the hour.

From the Jersey side we take a bearing, as
on mountains from the vantage of the plain,
on the towers from the vantage of the
dirt-stiffened, unyielding, tarmac of marsh
grass gray like steel grayed a vegetable steel
from blur and the exhausts of the turnpike.

Position with regard to surrounding objects
here it is unlike in the mountains which give
a bearing even from the deep within them, let you
see them from inside their formation. . . .

We map our way with only the bearing

of surrounding life itself borderless
uncontrolled by the surface of our self. . . .

'We are the stuff of stars,' Sagan says."
