I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and fellow listeners
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, fred! So happy to be back on the radio!
  12:03pm Jesse k:

Welcome back Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David D:

Great to hear you again, Mayuko!
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

Hey Jesse! Saw that you moved to a new studio on Daniel's playlist last night (after the show.) I just got one too! Would be great if we can do studio visits each other someday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon and welcome back, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Webhamster Henry:

Good afternoon Mayuko and Vertigo players!
  12:08pm rbrt:

hello VP's, happy September! welcome back Mayuko!
Avatar 12:10pm fred:

@Webhamster Henry: How come your volume knob is off and only goes to ten? I've always wondered
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Great to have you here David! Thanks for tuning in, james, and Henry! Happy September to you too, rbrt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko. I hope you had a pleasant week off. Happy to be here today.
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

Hola, Ken, thank you for tuning in! My week off was spent on carrying a bunch of boxes. Just moved to a new place. So happy to be back on the radio!!!
Avatar 12:26pm fred:

I hope the new place is great. Moving is very tough for people who have a huge record collection (especially vinyl). I didn't even get asked when friends moved a few weeks ago, because I'm such a weakling (he runs a label)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Webhamster Henry:

@fred This is an old picture! I haven't visited it in a long time. Maybe visitors to the studio can take some new photos of it so I can see how it's doing.
  12:33pm P-90:

Hello Mayuko and friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Webhamster Henry:

2017 is turning out to be a good year for this kind of music!
  12:35pm P-90:

@Mayuko: I wish you happiness in your new home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Webhamster Henry:

If you click on my WFMU Friendship Society Profile and look at the Mamalama Facebook feed, you can see the mine my band was playing in last week at this time.
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

Hi P-90, thanks for tuning in and the wishes!
Avatar 12:41pm fred:

@Webhamster Henry: Looks cool. The acoustics must have been challenging in there
  12:43pm rbrt:

@webmaster henry that's wild!
Avatar 12:44pm fred:

This Kobayashi Utena Group track is pretty nice. It would probably sound great in that mine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and all
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

@fred yeah, I didn't know her until we got this cover album at the station, now I'm curious to hear more her stuff.

Good afternoon, coelacanth∅! Thanks for tuning in!
  12:49pm Rickwaukee:

Attention, class.
  12:51pm P-90:

Packing and moving boxes isn't anyone's idea of fun! We've all been there, we know what a drag it is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Webhamster Henry:

The acoustics are great in there! no flat reflecting surfaces (outside of the underground pond) means really smooth and long reverb! You can be really quiet in there.
  12:56pm rbrt:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Webhamster Henry:

I call it "Music".
  12:57pm Rickwaukee:

  1:00pm rbrt:

Billie Holiday's voice is timeless
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm listener james from westwood:

I went nearly 4 decades not even knowing that song existed. It wasn't taught to white-majority classes or discussed in college. Can only imagine how many areas of the country where that's still true.
  1:07pm Rickwaukee:

That was some "Lament" - sounded like something you'd hear in a Terrence Malick film
Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

haha, welcome Rickwaukee! If I ever open up a record store, I'll make a "dreams-core" section.
Avatar 1:08pm fred:

I think the writer of Strange Fruit was Jewish, so that segue from Avrum Berkovitsh to Skip James is appropriate in this set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm coelacanth∅:

Gary played strange fruit sung by a japanese artist a few weeks ago that is quite good
  1:14pm zm:

Hi Mayuu, back from KANAZAWA called littel kyoto was OK, prefer Kyoto though. BUt if you visiting KANAZAWA don't miss http://www.kanazawa-museum.jp/chikuonki/ I wonder if Mac's already visited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David D:

I strongly approve of this set's diversity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Webhamster Henry:

Oh man, Brundibár. I'm sure you'll tell your listeners all about this opera!
  1:16pm Jeff g.:

Here, doing dishes.
Avatar 1:18pm Mayuko:

james, that's very interesting! At least the massacre of Koreans in 1923 was on my history textbook at school - though not much into the details. Only learned how really cruel and insane it was as an adult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David D:

And I am strongly moved by it's plumbing the depths of the diversity of human suffering - extremely moving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

Major milestones in the black experience in America were covered in my public-school classes from '76 through '83 —slave trade, then the Civil War, then the Reconstruction, then blip forward to Dr. King—but never the lasting effects on both white and black Americans, other major figures in black culture, politics, or civil rights, or the enduring institutional racism in ways like redlining, effects on neighborhoods, differences in opportunity, etc. Kids left that school in 6th grade thinking all was well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm doctorjazz:

Driving, a moment to say hi, LOVED that last set, just sayin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Webhamster Henry:

The original of Brundibár is in Czech. I saw an English version about 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm David D:

No, it is good to play it in a different language. By good I mean very hard to take actually - the contrast between the blithe sounding Italian children and the history of the piece, it really brings it home. Sorry if I've been typing gibberish here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm doctorjazz:

Moment of Daddy pride here, my younger daughter knew Strange Fruit when it came on.
Avatar 1:28pm fred:

Power erasing history is familiar to me. For a long time, decolonization was taboo over here, especially when it comes to Algeria. Talking about it was probably illegal at some point
  1:32pm Dean:

Power is a ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm listener james from westwood:

The most we heard (and sang) in my suburban white publisc school in the late 70s was what were called Negro spirituals in music class.
  1:36pm Rickwaukee:

Mayuko is the new Vera Lynn https://youtu.be/cHcunREYzNY
Avatar 1:40pm geezerette:

Hi, Mayuko and up-standers!
Glad To listen in real time for a bit.
Avatar 1:41pm Mayuko:

How's it going, zm? There are many little Kyoto I feel... never been, would like to see it.

Hellos Jeff g!!
Avatar 1:43pm fred:

Hi geezerette, nice to "see" you on my favorite show. Are you drawing something?
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

Hello, doctorjazz! That IS something you can really be proud of! I wonder how/where she heard the song the first time?
Avatar 1:46pm geezerette:

Hi Fred! Yes, I am,thanks! :)
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

Sorry, there was a hick-up on my equipments.
Avatar 1:50pm Mayuko:

I'm glad you approved of the Italian ver, David D! I thought it sounded good to me.
Avatar 1:51pm fred:

@geezerette: sorry if I mislead you, "When you're a star" turned out to be more about Cosby than Trump. But I guess the disgust level is comparable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm listener james from westwood:

Suitable Kevin Ayers track for these times!
Avatar 1:52pm Mayuko:

Hola, Dean! geezerette, good afternoon!
Avatar 1:53pm Mayuko:

Wow, you saw the play Henry! I hope to watch it sometime soon. I only learned about it because I read that it was something Maurice Sendak would listen to pretty intensely.
  1:58pm Rickwaukee:

reminds me of "I'm A Fool To Want You" and Cure's "Love SOng"
  1:58pm Rickwaukee:

  1:59pm Ike:

I've been listening even though I haven't been commenting! Cool show.
Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

That's true, it did sound like I'm A Fool To Want You!
Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

Ike! Thanks!
Avatar 2:01pm geezerette:

Fred, thanks for clarification! Cosby's a tragedy and as for the other guy, it's the damage he's doing to the planet and our global future I'm horrified by. On a physical level he's just another human being with a tendency to corpulence. It's his mind that's repulsive.
  2:01pm Rickwaukee:

and quiet parts of Carly Simon's ""That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" - SO MUCH
Avatar 2:03pm fred:

I just love the drums on this Fra Lippo Lippi song
Avatar 2:03pm geezerette:

Mayuko, this is a great show. It's fun to hear it live but always grateful for the archives.
Congratulations on new studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In my imagination, "Lost" is a movie soundtrack for a scene where the heroes are flying over a barren landscape, looking for their advisory,
  2:05pm Ike:

May I ask, still in Qns, Mayuko? Or hip northern Bklyn among the cool murals? Or did you come here to southern Bklyn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 2:06pm geezerette:

Avatar 2:07pm Mayuko:

Ike, I'm near you, hip southern Brooklyn. we and JakeGould are making it hip.
Avatar 2:07pm Mayuko:

Thanks geezerette!! Glad you enjoy!

This is my last track today - Thank you all for listening!
  2:08pm rbrt:

thanks Mayuko! Have a great weekend everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm David D:

Thanks, Mayuko - this has been excellent in so many ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Ike:

Awesome, Mayuko. I forget whether or not you have any dietary restrictions but if you ever need recommendations for good tacos, huaraches, Lebanese food, or whatever, just ask.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mayuko
Avatar 2:09pm fred:

Many thanks Mayuko, this was a great show, as usual
  2:10pm Rickwaukee:

Thanks, NOW I GET TO GO OUTSIDE. It's been a pleasure, Mayuko. I might ever fall in love again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for a fine collection of music today, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm listener james from westwood:

This album found its toehold in America via "Sour Times" on radio but especially its striking video.
  2:12pm rbrt:

lol dam, it feels like yesterday :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm listener james from westwood:

The FMU DJ I most associate with Portishead is the mighty Charlie Lewis.
Avatar 2:14pm geezerette:

I miss Charlie!
Avatar 2:16pm geezerette:

There aren't enough hours for all the brilliant DJs on FMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm listener james from westwood:

Likewise, geezerette!

Thanks a ton, Mayuko!
  2:18pm Rickwaukee:

Parks worked with Brian WIlson so he knew how to communicate across a big divide :)
Avatar 2:19pm Mayuko:

Ike, I need ice cream recommendations.
Avatar 2:20pm Mayuko:

Thanks again, it was a pleasure having all of you here with me! See you next week.
