Howdy, @Melinda, @Doug, and @Coelacanth! I'm back on my home broadcast console for the first time in awhile. Be sure to alert me to any and all technical irregularities.

Sounds fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

you sound fine...the mic sounds a *little* thin...nothing dramatically wrong with it. Level is fine.

this track is cookin' so you're on your way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks, @UM! I just put a little more low end on it, so we'll see what happens next break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Uncle Michael:

low end on the mic only, I trust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm

@UM: Correct!

The app on my device is not able to spell the name of this track. It's giving me six boxes with a question mark inside each.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm

i have 6 boxes with the number 12 in each, above various other numbers and letters. (4 characters/box)

Oh, thanks for the heads up, @Doug. The app must not have the Ge'ez font.

This is great. Is it belaboring the obvious to note that cooks in contemporary studios go (not that they necessarily shouldn't) for autotune and go for processing/synth/tech controls to get the vocal dynamics and fractional stops that we're happily getting direct right here from the human source?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
coelacanth∅:

(i guess i could've just done this: (ዳርልን (ባሌ))

...but now it's all there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Sam Segal:

I'm not opposed to tasteful dollops of auto-tune in some contexts, @sbp! Sometimes the synthetic quality is exactly the emotional quality the music needs (e.g. Kanye West's brilliant "808s and Heartbreak")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
coelacanth∅:

i cannot agree. i won't say what they shouldn't do, but i know i'll never want to hear it.
...i noted yesterday when i heard a Sinead O'Connor song that i quite dislike (i do quite like many Sinead O'Connor songs...) that i'd rather hear a boring, predictable - in my opinion really crappy song with real vocals than anything at all using autotune. (in any style or language, it seems)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Uncle Michael:

When used as an effect, I don't see it as different than using a sonovox, voorder or talk box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm

Avatar 9:36pm
still b/p:

I've heard some uses that has some noodle-y fun. But if anything cries out for a merciful end to pedestrian, pathetic, pain-in-the collar-button, indiscriminate OVERuse, it is that ol' autotune. Guilty producers should be made to wear a scarlet A in shame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Sam Segal:

I agree with you, @UM. I also think most artists who choose to use Autotune do it for effect, rather than a desire to fool the listener into thinking they have perfect pitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
coelacanth∅:

UM@9.34 3 effects i also generally don't want to hear!
...there are exceptions, where i can sort of tolerate it, occasionally. (Frampton being a notable one)

when Cher did it - first(ish) it was a novelty so was interesting. that's an exception.
Neil Young's use of it was part of his expression, regarding his autistic son. another exception.
Avatar 9:42pm
still b/p:

...but unless someone uses it for that signature "effected" sound, do we even know when artists are using it for pitch correction? I've heard or read comments from discouraged industry people saying young recording artists today just expect to have their vocals fixed that way as a matter of course. It's all they know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
coelacanth∅:

it just feels so dehumanizing to me, the way it's almost always used. "perfect" singing is so boring, as well as insincere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
melinda:

So what effect does autotune create? I don't know if I could identify it, and it sounds like it doesn't create perfect pitch but rather something else, since it is a source of irritation to some.
Avatar 9:45pm
JustTryingToBeAGoodGuy:

AUTO TUNE ALLOWED ME TO FULLY EXPRESS MYSELF MUSICALLY. WITHOUT AUTO-TUNE I WOULD STILL BE A PUBLIC SCHOOL PHYS ED TEACHER. NOW I AM FAMOUS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
coelacanth∅:

so Sam, yes (@9.37) - as an effect i don't hate it, fundamentally...but it still rubs me the wrong way!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda - the way it's usually used, it converts all notes a singer sings to the notes heshe would liked to have been able to sing, so talentless people can still become famous with the brainwashed general public.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
doctorjazz:

Not sure I recognize the sound of it..probably better off that way. Don't listen to much pop stuff. If I keened into the sound, I expect I'd be annoyed (or not...)
Avatar 9:50pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
melinda:

So, does someone with genuine perfect pitch irritate in the same way?
Avatar 9:51pm
JustTryingToBeAGoodGuy:

YA BUT STILL...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know this artist you mention, but it sounds like the effect he's going for is "boring"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
coelacanth∅:

melinda - certainly not! autotune makes a human sound like a machine. (to greatly varying degrees) this is what i don't like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Uncle Michael:

Meat Puppets sound like Phish?

I'll mull that over.
Avatar 9:54pm
JustTryingToBeAGoodGuy:

I FEEL LIKE 2007 BRITNEY
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
coelacanth∅:

okay - i thought autotune was a brand of pitch-correction devices.

i'd like to hear some autotune that doesn't "correct" pitch; as an effect. i probably won't like the music it's used in, for the most part - but i'd like to know the difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
Sam Segal:

@Coelacanth, I will prepare some introductory materials for next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm

The curmudgeon in me says, pitch correct fits in an age where you don't need to learn to play music to make records, and don't have to learn to sing to sing on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
coelacanth∅:

Thank you Sam. i hope i can be here. mondays are sometimes problematic for me these days.
Avatar 10:02pm
still b/p:

Melinda, if you want clear examples of the um, more controversial use...I suggest listening (re-listening?) to Cher's "Believe." When her vocal occasionally does the quick warbley little up and down thing that sounds artificial and slightly synthesized, it's cuz it is. That's the effect that producers and artists sometimes go bananas with in the last 15+ years.
You can hear it a lot in a track from Big Blood with their daughter doing the vocal, and I don't mind it here although it's heavy. It's in this in Ken playlist at 56:42 (With Tracy and Hepburn in the adjacent image.)

For some moreglobal perspective on Autotune, I highly recommend Christopher Kirkley's radio show, "Autotune the World" on NTS. Kirkley is the founder of the great Sahel Sounds label.

And those Algerian tracks often sound like they're recorded at nutty hot levels, too, for more force in the fun.

what commotion? just diverging tastes and sensitivities.
...imagine if we all liked exactly the same music! then we'd all be MAKING the same music.

Sam Segal:

Right you are, @Coelacanth!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
melinda:

Ok the Big Blood daughter vocal is definitely of the synthetic quality I've been complaining about, although I agree it does work ok in that instance. But yes, I've been wondering about the mania for this alteration technique. I thought of it as nasal robot.

i'm not unhappy or ashamed to report that when i think of the words "hullabaloo" & "shindig" i think of "bulbous bouffant".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Sam Segal:

I think you'll find it interesting at the very least, @Coelacanth! I don't always dig everything he plays, but it's nice to have a place to go for contemporary African pop music, when often times I feel like Westerners (myself included) present "global" pop as a historic phenomenon.
