Options September 13, 2017: The start of a new WFMU schedule, so it's time for my annual tribute to Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack, my good friend from high school who was a lifelong influence on my musical taste

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

[photo via Kathy Moore] It's the first week of the new WFMU Fall/Winter/Spring schedule, and as I've done since my very first show on the weekly schedule back in 2006 I'm dedicating this show to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, also known as Jimmy Mack.

Jim's passion for music - and radio, for that matter - was overpowering and irresistible. In the late '70s, while we were still in high school, he began working at Boston's WBCN, then one of the top rock stations in the country. He started out as a volunteer on the station's acclaimed Listener Line, then transitioned to the Music department and ultimately became WBCN's Music Director by the time he was 20.

Jimmy was as generous with his opinions on new bands he loved (Cheap Trick! The Dictators! The Motors! Ultravox! The Stranglers!) as he was with extra promo records that WBCN received, and I was a willing and fortunate recipient of both during my last couple of years of high school. Jimmy and I stayed in touch through college -- in fact, he hired me as his assistant at Stiff Records' US office when he was doing radio promotion. But we drifted apart after he moved out West, and to my great regret we were no longer in touch when he passed away in 1986 due to AIDS-related complications. He was only 25.

His influence during those formative high school years has stayed with me to this day: many of the bands he introduced me to are still among my favorites, and I'd like to think that my own passion for seeking out new music and playing it on the radio is at least partly due to being friends with Jim back then.

As I've written here before, there have been countless times that I've wished Jimmy was still here so I could tell him about a great new record I'd heard, or he could tell me about his new favorites. I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to go on the radio every week and share my favorites with you. If you like what you hear, take a moment to say "thanks" to Jimmy Mack for shaping my musical taste for a lifetime.

...hi Evan and Funkies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Your Ace From Exchange Place:

Hey hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm chad from oregon:

This week is already a hit.
  9:04pm Stevel:

Awesome. I'm taking it as a tribute to Mr. Berger. Such a master guide to darker realms. I'll miss his show, and especially miss his voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm chris_in_space:

Hey Funkaloids; it's good to be here after a couple weeks of missing the show. This one is starting of swimmingly. You've got my attention, @efd

Greetings from the Valley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm medson:

Evening folks. Tough news today from WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm coelacanth∅:

is it really true? i haven't been able to find any word about Wm. Berger checking out, all day, from any source - and it's easily believable that certain people at wfmu would play a "joke" in such poor taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm efd:

sadly 100% true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

(...i.e. a billboard that mentions "your dead mother")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm medson:

its no joke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

Thank you Evan.

rest in peace Mr.Hip Bone, quiet dweller of the castle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

-i think it's fucked up that there's no mention of it on wfmu's home page.
  9:19pm JakeGould:

You know, this week at WFMU is really death week:

• Monday: Dave Hill’s guest is a woman who basically helps people do pre-death planning.
• Tuesday: The sad and unexpected news of William Berger’s passing.
• Wednesday: This tribute show.

Not saying anything of this in criticism or anything negative. But wow… What a death week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm aratuk:

There probably will be some mention of it soon. People have to wrap their heads around it and come up with something appropriate to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm efd:

@coel I believe there are family-related reasons why nothing has been posted yet. I would expect to see something tomorrow.
  9:20pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: It’s not by accident it’s not mentioned on the homepage. William’s son apparently hasn’t been told yet—at least as of this afternoon—so nobody is in denlal at what happened, but outside of mentions on the playlists and maybe a vague dedication on air, the station is respecting the family’s wishes to be low key for now.
  9:21pm Marie:

That,s a wonderful tribute, Evan. I am so sorry to hear of Bill Berger's passing. Wow.
  9:21pm V Priceless:

hey efd and all - rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm FletcherNYC:

Those Jimmy's of our lives (mine Damon, Chuck and Jeff) Such gifted and generous spirits. Makes me wonder where I'd be without having known
them. Thanks .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

okay that's a good reason Jake. Thanks for telling me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm efd:

thanks Marie and FletcherNYC, appreciate your thoughts.
  9:24pm JakeGould:

And positive thoughts to the memories of all that have passed.
Avatar 9:24pm Megadano:

Wm Berger was a true scholar of music and I would sit up whenever he got on the mic. Lots of peeople don't know that he was the music director for the station before Brian Turner. Ken said today that William was the first person he hired at WFMU. I'm just gutted that he is gone as he and his show were such a reliable fixture of my week.R.I.P.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

hello everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

yeh sorry Evan. i wasn't oblivious - i remember this time last year, and before. i just wanted a bit of clarity regarding Wm..
i'm sad for your loss.

rest in peace Jim McIntyre.
Avatar 9:27pm Megadano:

Fun fact: I listened to "My Castle Of Quiet" while storyboarding many episodes "Rick & Morty". He got me through lots of crazy deadlines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm efd:

totally understandable coel, no worrues. It's an unfortunate confluence of events, as Jake noted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm efd:

@Megadano right on, thanks for sharing those memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm mr_mikeK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

Megadano that's interesting...my memory is messing with me then; i thought i remembered "the hip bone" from before Ken entered the scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm medson:

@efd and you do a fine job every week. appreciate it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Switchblade Batman:

So sorry for your losses @EFD, Jimmy and William.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm chris_in_space:

Yay, GbV! Saw them a couple weeks ago in Asbury Park!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm efd:

I heard good things about that show, chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm chris_in_space:

@efd, it was a great show. Much better than the last time they rolled through Asbury Park and played the Stone Pony. Let's not talk about that one. Drove down from Toronto on both occasions, and I'd do it again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm medson:

saw Leather girls last year in Austin. Highly reccommended

Oh yeah my jam!
  10:05pm Stevel:

Always loved OMD. So cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm medson:

@efd I've always liked their music, never saw them live. My friends who have relocated to Austin said I'd be crazy to miss them at Monty. They were more than right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm chris_in_space:

@Bianconeri: the new GbV, and the previous double LP August by Cake are both really great. This is truly a fantastic version of the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm joe:

@efd I'm at a lose. My condolences to all of you guys up there I know you all must be reeling

  10:40pm Stevel:

Holy crap, yet again, to Rut and this entire set!
  10:45pm Adam from Vancouver:

So touching that Ken played Wm singing "New Rose" on his show today. He really did justice to that classic on the mic! I'm missing him terribly already. No more new CoQ. That's a real kick in the stomach. So thankful we have his archives! And thank you, EFD, and all WFMU faithful!
  10:46pm JakeGould:

Dang! These Eyelids are pretty good.
  10:50pm Marc15:

Is that "Jealous Butcher" Sam from "The Brady Bunch"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm coelacanth∅:

welcome WM k moss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm efd:

Welcome WKM! Happy to have you join our merry crowd.
  11:06pm JakeGould:

There needs to be some song about “Instagram Boyfriends.” The poor schmoes who take the pictures of their girlfriends eating salad and shit in an Anne of Green Gables hat and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Switchblade Batman:

Weekends with you is pretty great, it's something incredibly modern and also works good if you sing it sarcastically when you're on Tinder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Switchblade Batman:

I feel that there is one, or something to that effect @JakeGould.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Switchblade Batman:

Fun fact though, according to copyright law it's that dumb schmo who took the picture that owns the rights to it. Copyright goes to the one who hit the shutter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm medson:

go for protomartyr
  11:19pm Stevel:

Ticket snakers!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm efd:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm medson:

  11:30pm Stevel:

This is pretty good.
