Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
@Gaylord: I’m pretty positive that the Discogs listing for “Happy Cat” is pretty anemic, right? Hopefully the gaps will be filled in sometime soon. www.discogs.com...
My husband and I were listening to something from the archives last night and he said,"Every DJ on this station seems to have a Ph.D. in musicology!". Told him that was just scratching the surface.
@Gaylord: Oh, Carrie and Kerry and TOTALLY different!!
I should give credit. The person who told me about the "Mary, marry, merry" thing was Chris M. I've tested it on my boyfriend and other Californians, and it's bizarre to me that there's no difference in their pronunciation!
@ Fox (Rā-chul): I have a California friend who studies linguistics, and not only does she pronounce all three the same, she also can't tell that I pronounce all three distinctively (which I definitely do) despite her training!
@gaylord: yeah exactly. i bought that record from the "weird" section of the record store in ithaca ny and brought it home and thought it would scare my mom but she was like "i loved the wombles when i was a kid"

NYC/NJ accent says them as distinct words. Most other regions do not.

And I pronounce all three distinctively. And I pronounce the names "Carrie" and "Kerry" distinctively from each other as well.
