It's been really great hearing all the DJs play Uncle Wiggly.

Glenn L:

Love this Uncle Wiggly song! Thanks, Irene!
  9:43pm
JakeGould:

I wasn’t initially going to comment on William Berger’s passing but hey… I will say that I don’t like black metal or noise. And I have met a lot of people who like that stuff that I then don’t like.

And in contrast, William Berger—from my limited exposure to him—just was an affable curmudgeon. Someone who could respect tat someone might not have the same tastes as them but still like the person. Sad about all he’s recently went through, but as I have said on another playlist, I hope he’s at peace wherever he is now.

William had such a unique guitar style! Uncle Wiggly was a fantastic band.

Irene Trudel:

Hey Jake, Mikey_B, Mike tp, Rachel, and Glenn! Sorry I couldn't say more about William last week. Ken asked me not to mention it until he had a little more confirmation. We're all pretty broken up about him.
  9:51pm
Bobby:

This version of Norway completely melts me. Yes to this.
  9:51pm
Listener Robert:

Is "I Said Goodbye to Me" a mashup of "Piano Man" and something else that sounds familiar but I just can't place?
Avatar 9:55pm
Fox (Rā-chul):

Jake: Yeah... I mentioned somewhere else, that though I didn't know, like, ANYTHING that William played, nor the movies he referenced, but... we were cool to each other. He was always utterly himself, without pretense. He ended up being the best friend I had at WFMU, which was unexpected, but seamless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Irene Trudel:

No, Robert. It's a tune written by Harry Nilsson. So many of his songs had the ring of familiarity.
  9:58pm
Listener Robert:

Is it possible the familiarity ran in the opposite direction, i.e. composers having been influenced by Mr. Nilsson?
  10:00pm
Listener Robert:

Heh, I liked "Lobby", a contraction of Listener & Bobby. That can happen inadvertently when we write over Web applications, and the connection's a little slow and misses packets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Irene Trudel:

Oops, caught me trying in vain to correct my bad typing! Sorry, I meant Robert. But I do think Harry was Hugely influential.

Why have I not purchased every Sparks album? Hippopotamus is very impressive. Damned good.

@ JakeGould -- yes, William was a total sweetheart
@ Irene -- have not heard any more details about his passing; whatever happened -- i hope he is at peace
i LOVED the fact that he was this endless wealth of film information -- and was always kind and generous enough to let me know more about whichever film he was talking about
me, i loved the music he played -- and i am not even a huge black metal fan!
but artists like Couch Slut, Mandatory Human LiveStock Reduction, and Wretched Worst are some of my now-favorites, thanks to William: beyond compare and unique and cathartic as hell
AND all the cats here -- including the foster kitties! -- totally adored his show! 'nuff said :)

It's very nice to continue to read and hear tributes to Wm. B. His show could make me extremely uncomfortable. That moment of suspense when the photo on his playlist would load. Difficult to put into words why I bonded with his show, although I do like heavy music. He was a clearheaded gentle guide to some pretty dark shit. I'll miss his show and his voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah Stevel i sometimes -after a quick peek -would wait to bring up the playlist again until after he'd played a few songs, so the gruesome image wouldn't be visible to me!

Thanks ztnap & slugluv! If you click on the picture you'll find lots of her work on Flickr. Absolutely brilliant "deviant art" as she calls it. Just discovered her yesterday.

SteveI and coelacanth, it's great hearing all the stories about William. I'm sure he's listening in somewhere.
  10:45pm
Stevel:

ztnap: Any My Castle of Quiet might do. I suggest listening to the introductory pieces more than once, because they're creepy as hell. He usually gives a clue in any show titles, as to what might be featured--noise, black metal, doom, what have you. He has a much longer history prior, but I'm not familiar with that.

wood-elf, Ghosts was a fairly late album for The Strawbs. 1974. They were pretty proggy at the right moments.
  11:39pm
JakeGould:

So here is a question about William Berger’s history: Are all of the “Hip Bone” shows lost to time? I assume that digitally they are not available, but in light of it all I wonder if William had air checks that can be digitized and put on line at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Irene Trudel:

Jake, unless listeners have copies taped off air I think they're gone. If anyone out there has any shows they'd like us to digitize, please let us know.
