It's not just tech, it's all art and media through the modern lens of the tech age. Every art school graduate I've met under 35 (especially who has graduated from FIT) treats art like a commodity; something that is judged in clicks and likes, in quick turnover and successful branding.

@Fox, you are so right. It's frightening, the sameness of absolutely everything.

It's unsustainable and extremely destructive.

I'll recommend a (by now) old book by Kevin Robins & Frank Webster, The Times of the Technoculture: From the Information Society to the Virtual Life. It's a good antidote, then and now, to unrealistic claims about technology.

Dean, I used to read Wired when it was new and it consisted entirely of hype. Early warning.

I abandoned Wired a l-o-n-g time ago. I can't fathom the naivete.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
chris:

don't do it! 1) their security sucks 2) you are clicking away your right to sue them. do not use the equifax site to see if you were effected by the breach (breech?).

Dean:

Also, I have a hard time reading a magazine in which I can't distinguish the content from the ads.

Dean, I actually read it to see how the growing industry represented itself to rest of us. Head smacking!

the FTC is investigating criminal charges against the equifax senior managers who sold stock prior to the announcement of the breach. its a start. the CPB should be making equifax pay to let consumers know if they were effected and how to address it.

The Equifax site told me I was not affected by the breach. Whew. But then I read articles about how vulnerable everyone is regardless and all the crap you have to do to protect your identity. Some day I will do it.

Isn’t the problem here the fact that all these companies are run by folks who know nothing about technology.
And they rely on IT people who are only concerned with keeping their CEO’s in the dark. Ensuring job security.
They don’t want things secure.

Acceptable in society? The idea of privacy has been heavily diluted. -- As for chips in hand, has any company used BARCODES on employees? It could be linked to ID and other things. I'd demand a lil kitten icon next to my barcode.

The collection of Data fell upon deaf ears and my kids school. They use google classroom for everything because it’s “cheap”.
I asked if they were concerned about google gathering all this info and all I got Wes’s silence. And they weren’t sure what google was doing with our children’s info.

Equifax is not the first of the big three/four to have these issues of course. Experian has also had major security breaches. Here's a link to an interactive infographic you might find interesting: http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations/worlds-biggest-data-breaches-hacks/
