A curious quality of the music by these RIO artists is its calming effect. Meshuggah makes me want to *oppose* something. Henry Cow and the rest make me want to kick back and enjoy the day.

All seven RIO bands appeared on the same bill at least once, in '79, in Milan -- must have been quite something. (By then Henry Cow had morphed into Art Bears.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Jeff Golick:

Rock in Opposition is such an odd umbrella term, from this vantage point. The thing to which they are opposed is implied or assumed, I guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Jeff Golick:

Or not odd so much as vague.
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, some of them (Henry Cow, Art Bears, Stormy Six) were explicitly opposed to the capitalist system -- others were not as politically oriented. They were all opposed to the commercial music mainstream, though, I guess. Perhaps the lack of political "agreement" is why the collective only lasted two years?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Jeff Golick:

I think at some point I conflated Rock Against Racism and the RIO movements, because my brain is small and my synapses are easily confused and "opposition" is a lot like "against."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Jeff Golick:

(And RAR is a lot like ReR.)

I dunno. This sounds kinda dangerous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
coelacanth∅:

well, i got otherwise distracted then came back but now i must go work...maybe be moving some rocks in opposition today, to plant a tree!
i'm glad this one's archived.
Thanks Tony!
ciao
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff: Stormy Six, in particular, were very active in left-wing politics (in Italy) -- and Chris Cutler (of Henry Cow & Art Bears) is also quite left-wing. I'm pretty sure the RIO name came from Cutler, and that he wanted the RIO bands to be more obviously political. Some of them were clearly more focused just on making their own unique music....

I forgot to mention on Destination Out, those in the NY/Philly area, Ars Nova in Philly is having a big week. Sun Ra Arkestra on Thursday, Anthony Braxton on Friday, and many artists Saturday and Sunday (don't think I'll be able to get out to it much if any, my daughter is coming home from college, but maybe...)

There's a Disney animator whose name is Jeffery, which he insists people pronounce Geefwee. He spells it that way to save having to explain.

  2:01pm
Dean:

What is it with Jeffs?

Gentle Giant entry: In a Glass House.
Avatar 2:01pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Nick S: "In a Glass House," maybe? GG's vocals can be a bit of an obstacle to enjoyment (for me at least), and they can be sort of pretentious and lumbering -- but there's still plenty to like, methinks.
  2:02pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON:

In opposition to what?
the commercial rock world - Queen etc,
a political statement?
Avatar 2:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, RIO SPEEDWAGON (great name!) Some of the RIO bands were left-wing and politically active, which is where the name came from -- others weren't.
Avatar 2:05pm
northguineahills:

Look what the cat dragged in!
  2:05pm
Dean:

GG vocals are an issue, but on the upside they are one of the few rock bands to do really interesting group vocal stuff. I'd say another barrier is the faux-medieval/Renaissance veneer (much like Gryphon), but then again any band that sings about Gargantua and Pantagruel is alright by me.
  2:06pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON:

who in today's rock world can be described as RIO?
Avatar 2:06pm
Tony Coulter:

Thinking Plague would be one example.
Avatar 2:08pm
Nick S.:

Thanks! As many records as they've put out I've owned the bad ones. In a Glass House I haven't heard and if you're comparing Stormy Six to that I'll be having a listen. I have Napster to thank for hipping me to Stormy Six 17 years ago.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey hey hey, NGH!
  2:09pm
RIO SPEEDWAGON:

YES - I used to follow them religiously, but then just forgot about them.
Certainly stylisticly it any band that sound like early Mothers of Invention, Magma and Soft Machine.
Avatar 2:10pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Nick S: Not sure if "Glass House" will be the album to drive home my comment about that Stormy Six track -- but it still is one of their better albums.
Avatar 2:10pm
geezerette:

punk rock with skills.
Avatar 2:12pm
geezerette:

yes it's Zappa-y and it's cracking me up. (which is easy to do.).
Avatar 2:14pm
northguineahills:

Are Os Mutantes still touring, they would be RIO, but I bet they'd prefer to be described as Paulistas.
Avatar 2:19pm
geezerette:

Asak Maboul's music keeps reminding me of Looney Tunes' Marvin the Martian. :)
