House and Land live on WFMU 2017-10-03

Live performance and chat with House and Land

This sweet acoustic duo harmonizes on old hymns and Appalachian folk tunes, using traditional folk resources in an ecstatic setting. Asheville, NC guitarist Sarah Louise Henson with fiddle player Sally Anne Morgan (of Pelt and Black Twig Pickers) began their collaboration after playing a few gigs together, discovering their shared love of this music. House and Land released an album on Thrill Jockey this past summer, and dropped by the studio to record this set for Irene's show.

Good eve, Irene.

Stevel:

Good evening. Already missed a bunch on this set list. Don't often hear these ladies. Not often enough, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi Cooh John and Steve! Good evening to you too.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Irene. Do I detect a pumpkin spice motif here?
  9:37pm
DMZ:

This is great! Thanks for hipping me to Offa Rex and Shirley Collins! I am a longtime Fairport fan - never heard of them!!!

Will this show be available to dowload/online listen later? Archived?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Irene Trudel:

Ken, tis true. A little spice goes a long way. And, yes, DMZ, the show will be archived as always.

Hi melinda and tuskandhusk! glad you're here to enjoy all this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
melinda:

I heard English too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Irene Trudel:

Definitely. But I do love the Appalachian style of tight harmonies. They're very close in style, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
melinda:

Yes, that part seems more American. But all related.
Avatar 10:17pm
Jeff:

Wow, it's fascinating to mentally compare this style of harmony with the Balkan harmonies people like Black Sea Hotel do... some similarities in the lack of any fear of dissonance, but a different flavor (which somebody who knows more about music than I would probably be able to put a finger on - different intervals?)
Avatar 10:19pm
Jeff:

I need to listen to these ladies more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Irene Trudel:

Jeff, I do think many of these vocal traditions have a common thread between them. It's fun to hear how they get absorbed into other cultures. House and Land, plainly beautiful!
  10:23pm
Bobby:

Whoa this is great.
  10:23pm
Stevel:

Plainly beautiful, indeed. Very nice!

John Fahey playing a guitar is my most favorite of all possible things.

Utterly gorgeous set.

I'll just let Threemoons express my opinions of the music, as they mirror my own.

I like this set too.

Threemoons:

Blarg. Just got a call from my upstairs neighbor--she was claiming that I was playing this music too loud and I haven't touched the volume on my rig (listening online) in ages. She has cancer that has wandered all over her body though, so I profusely apologized and lowered it. Gotta count your blessings...I feel terrible for her...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Irene Trudel:

Well, when you're not feeling good sometimes even gentle sounds can be irritating. Hope you have some headphones, Threemoons.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Threemoons:

Oh, no worries, I already turned it way down. She's a very sweet lady and frankly I am abashed that I caused any trouble....

Hi Irene! whens your Kate Bush show happening!

Irene, the emotional warmth and directness of the acoustic music you play is a wonderful thing.

wonderful show as always Irene , Happy Fall / October !
Avatar 11:19pm
northguineahills:

@Threemoons: I had once had a neighbor in Brooklyn, who, I've never seen, who was about 50, complain about the bass of my music when I was playing Johnny Cash at 8pm on a Saturday. Considering the more youthful neighbors I had that constantly had parties, I had no idea how she lasted.

When I moved in to my new place, I put my music on 110% volume (it's rarely above 40%), playing bass heavy club music, and asked them if it was too loud. They were fine w/ it. (I do it w/ each new neighbor).

Great show, as ever, Irene! Feeling a bit under the changing weather, we made some homemade soup, put on the wildcard game without sound and tuned in/tuned up you!

@Summer and Michael: That's how I always watch sports, while cooking w/ WFMU or my records playing w/ the sound on the game on mute.

Silly Wizard, new to me. Can't believe it wasn't on that wyeird english folk compilation (13 cdrs) that came out over a decade ago. Thanks Irene, I'm off. Beautiful tones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Irene Trudel:

Glad you're all enjoying the music tonight! NGH, Silly Wizard have been around a while. One of their members recently passed away. I don't like everything of theirs but every so often a track like that just gets me.

Threemoons:

@northguineahills: That's good of you. Frankly, she blasts HER music sometimes--her SO is a member of a well-known 80's band that I shall not name at present--but again, I have full sympathy for her. She has been struggling with bone cancer, which became brain cancer, which is probably why she is so sound-sensitive now. They had a grip on the brain stuff 6 months ago, but these things rarely get better; they either stay in a holding pattern or get worse...
