This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Let's lay out on some velvet and take in some mood music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm melinda:

Yes to mood music! Howdy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm doctorjazz:

Ahhh, the sweet sound of vinyl...
Hi all!
Avatar 7:02pm geezerette:

Our hostess has a jar of jelly beans, but no martinis?
'Evening. Evan and Explorers!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hello Melinda! Hello Doc! Some of my scratchiest vinyl tonight
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Geezerette! seriously, the jelly beans are confounding, right where a drink should be
Avatar 7:05pm geezerette:

Must be the newest diet.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

I have of course helpfully changed all the record covers (from various Stanley Black releases) to some of the records we'll be hearing from shortly. Long pulls tonight, some whole sides... luxuriating is the word I hope you'll want to use
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

cool. i like that Perez Prado record
Avatar 7:08pm geezerette:

Thirty days to a slimmer you, the jelly bean diet.
Jelly beans and Jello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Evan and all!
  7:17pm Ehd:

Hiya Evan and all, great to be back here
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

Well, this is the most stereotypically Bert Kaempfert Orchestra song I've heard!
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! Me too... though I do wonder how much Prez is even on it. They used to just put all kinds of mambos out under his name

Listener James! Ehd! Wonderful to see you all!
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

NGH! Hellow fellow
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

There's a track coming up on here called "Where Flamingos Fly" that is honestly one of my favorite song-title/sound synergies ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm doctorjazz:

This is the sappiest version of Dancing in the Dark, which is one of the sappiest songs EVER! Perfect combo...
Avatar 7:23pm geezerette:

If one were sufficiently hammered, say martinis and a valium or two, this might sound romantic.
Until you pass out and start to snore.
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

honestly I usually find Bert's stuff either totally inert or brutally insincere, but there's a playfulness and vitality on this record... the drummer is pretty fun to listen to, the bass has a good almost surf sound, there's a raunchiness in the horns
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

love to imagine flamingos to this song
Avatar 7:27pm geezerette:

Absolutely! Pretty languid flamingos.
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

somehow more accurate in its evocation than the exotica standard Flamingo
Avatar 7:29pm geezerette:

Tipsy tempo.
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

haha, exactly. that drummer is relaxed
Avatar 7:35pm Little Danny:

Heya Flash, all!
Avatar 7:37pm Little Danny:

There are some incredible and deep versions of "Where Flamingos Fly" out there. It's also a favorite of mine
Avatar 7:40pm northguineahills:

Reminds me of Sean O'Hagan's High Llamas...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm melinda:

I dug the Bert K set.
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

Hi Danny! I'd like to hear those, I don't think I've heard too many versions of it, actually
Avatar 7:42pm Little Danny:

I'll send ya a ZIP file of 'em, Flash
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

oh wow, I'd be most grateful, LD! Also, really looking forward to your show tonight, the single is like the wellspring of your great power, this week was made for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm melinda:

This style of banjo reminds me of Shakey's Pizza
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

this always reminds me of sneaking around the danvers asylum, trying to avoid the security guard without turning off the music, crawling around trying to get in those old tunnels, this demented music just making it all seem so absurd
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

was Shakey's sort of like a Chucky Cheese?
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

haha when this record takes things up a notch, it really hits ya
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

ok one more and then we hear some "sleepwalk" guitars
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

This music is so Looney-Tunes! Elmer Fudd in a Hawaiian shirt.
And Shakey's too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Aloha you incredibly handsome radiofolk!
Avatar 7:59pm glenn:

jelly beans and jello? hmmmm.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Aloha Doug! Glenn, welcome!

So Dan&Dale were famously Sun Ra's guys and Al Kooper's guys sessioning, at least circa the Batman stuff, but is that true for all Dan&Dale releases? Are there any Arkestra people on this?
Avatar 8:02pm geezerette:

Well, it works for our cover girl!

Doug, did you bring the hula hoops?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm melinda:

I remember Shakey's as having a good-time vibe, but I don't think it was designed specifically for kids. Wiki says that Shakey was responsible for a jazz revival in Sacramento: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Doug Schulkind:

I did, but now I am rethinking that strategy considering that the only thing I'm wearing is a grass skirt.
Avatar 8:03pm coelacanth∅:

howdy Flash and Explorers
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda: this is making me wish I had fond memories of a Shakey's! Don't think I'd ever heard of it before tonight
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi there friend Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I went to Shakey's often in my youth. The pizza was actual pizza, not this plastic shit served at the big chains today.
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

@Doug in a hula hoopin skirt: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:08pm geezerette:

Ha ha!
@Doug:(blush) ...uh...it suits you!
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

that sounds delicious, funtime jazz and good pizza
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Doug Schulkind:

That was "before." This is "after": i.pinimg.com...
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

oh yeah, now there's a hilarious and naughty hula
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey c'mon everybody, shake your monkeymakers for this here wonderful radio program! My a donation to WFMU in honor of Explorers Room using this link: pledge.wfmu.org...
Avatar 8:12pm geezerette:

Wow! You must be on the red velvet jelly bean diet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm melinda:

I don't have clear memories of Shakey's, there were other pizza joints I liked better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm doctorjazz:

Is that Before and After Shakey's Pizza?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm melinda:

I like Sukiyaki
Avatar 8:24pm glenn:

i liked mother's pizza. i don't know if they were in the states or not.
Avatar 8:25pm still b/p:

I'm a very unhappy caempfer to have missed so much Bert Kaempfert, and everything else so far.
Avatar 8:25pm geezerette:

It had a theme ,but never figured out what that was!
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Sukiyaki really is such a lovely melody
Avatar 8:27pm coelacanth∅:

i sure do want some pizza now.
Avatar 8:28pm still b/p:

But this Sway is the swellest!
Avatar 8:28pm geezerette:

Unidentified Hong Kong Artist is /was really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm melinda:

Caempfer, haha
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P!

haha I never thought this show of all shows would inspire so much pizza craving!
Avatar 8:28pm Little Danny:

Back after some hasty show prep. Bummed I missed yer take on Dan & Dale. Also, thanks for your kind words, Flash!
Avatar 8:29pm coelacanth∅:

yes sway's swell
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

ah, my pleasure, LD
Avatar 8:30pm geezerette:

She could have had hits here!
Avatar 8:30pm still b/p:

That version had perfect feng sway.
Avatar 8:31pm coelacanth∅:

damn i can't find my hi hat
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

@G: I agree, on both counts! she's great! that's her in the bottom corner of the header image here
Avatar 8:32pm Little Danny:

Lurvely version of "Besame Mucho." Also, spot-on retitling
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i love it so much, haha
Avatar 8:34pm geezerette:

It's beautiful! Very sweet.
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

such a cool version of Tabu here. I cherish this. would kill to know what lyrics they're using
Avatar 8:36pm Little Danny:

@Flash: agreed re: "Tabu" read
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Don't really think much or any of this is Prez, but I could be wrong... that "And Others" is doing a deceptive amount of work here
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

it's great either way! I love all those suspect Prez records just as much and sometimes more than his bonafide releases
Avatar 8:46pm Little Danny:

You may have mentioned this, but I always figured these were some of Prado's early recordings from Mexico City
Avatar 8:47pm still b/p:

I like how some of the horns and other instruments in the room sound more distant from the mike.
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

ah, that's very possible too! I have a few LPs that try to bundle one or two Prez tracks in with a bunch by other artists and put his name on the front, so I always get suspicious, but this does sound like it could be his early stuff
Avatar 8:48pm hyde:

disappointed that this record was not called Perez Prado et al
Avatar 8:50pm jaywbabcock:

This show makes me so happy. Thank you Evan for all you do
Avatar 8:50pm hyde:

also disappointed that weird ongoing plumbing issues have curtailed my ability to comment on tonight's playlist!
Avatar 8:51pm jaywbabcock:

Keep it dusty
Avatar 8:51pm hyde:

(note: it's not my house so i have little skin in this game. is just distracting)
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

haha, In Your Ear records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm JtotheK:

hi everyone. enjoying the tunes!
Avatar 8:58pm geezerette:

Hyde! Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm JtotheK:

re: shakey's pizza - also went there many, many times. many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm JtotheK:

Little Danny: has this pizza talk inspired you to dig out the 45 'Pizza Pie Man' by Roosevelt Grier? (a 45 I learned of from you!)
Avatar 9:00pm hyde:

@geezerette helllooooooo
Avatar 9:01pm geezerette:

JtotheK, there's a Shakey's in Hollywood.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Jay! Thanks sincerely, a kind word goes in my pocket for those rainy days
Avatar 9:03pm coelacanth∅:

Hy Hyde! sorry to hear about plumbing problems. one of my least favorite things to deal with that i'm not too bad at dealing with.
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

Hi J-K!

Hyde, you were also a patron of In Your Ear? Loved that shop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm melinda:

Shenandoah is a great song. Nice rendering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm JtotheK:

@geez - i'm jealous. no shakey's nearby me anymore. alas.
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Love this guy
  9:09pm zonk ludlow:

Tuning in from Sydney, Australia. Greetings all. Loving the show - A Message To Mankind sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm melinda:

@Flash me too.
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

welcome, far-flung explorer zonk ludlow, and very happy to have you among us. thanks for tuning in
Avatar 9:12pm coelacanth∅:

he sounds kind of like Ken Nordine
Avatar 9:12pm hyde:

@Flash Strap oh yeah. spent lots of money at In Your Ear. mostly at the Commonwealth Ave shop. (it's still there on Comm. Ave, but not where it used to be). one time i went in there, they referred to me as one of the "famous people". yikes.
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

he is!
Avatar 9:13pm coelacanth∅:

oh! i see that. never mind.
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

no, that was a great call, C.
  9:14pm zonk ludlow:

Cheers. The pleasure is mine.
Avatar 9:14pm still b/p:

Crumbling Buckboards...THERE'S your old-timey-western-semi-novelty band name.
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

@B/P: seriously, that's some real oater stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

Ken Nordine is one of my favorite Jerry Garcia collaborators.
Avatar 9:28pm coelacanth∅:

Evan's been carried off in the current
Avatar 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

UM, never heard of that. sounds fascinating!
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

I've never heard that, UM! Also, hello!
Avatar 9:30pm Little Danny:

Totally agreed that Mystic Moods (and mood music in general) inhabits the same continuum of psychedelic, transportive music
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

This is truly, and I mean this, one of the hippest records of all time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

In the early '90s Ken recorded an album with Jerry Garcia, and David Grisman's trio, called Devout Catalyst...it's terrific.
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

Oh, I HAVE heard of that! never heard it though. time to change that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm melinda:

Yes to psychedelic and transportive music.
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

@LD: it almost sounds like a Stockhausen piece "we edited the music to the rhythm of a field recording of a storm..." Hardly avant-garde in execution, but there's something to that, as well
Avatar 9:38pm geezerette:

Agree with you all. Surreal stuff.
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

About to jump on and thank a few pledgers – if you're quick, your name could be amongst the honored immortal
  9:43pm zonk ludlow:

Storm clouds and rain falling in my neck of the woods , consider me transported.
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

i never understood why that beautiful surfmen track was on the "music to scare hell out of your neighbors" album.
Avatar 9:48pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash!

Indeed, Singles-Going-Steady focus on jazz 45s this evening on the Cool Blue Flame. A special that's been a long time coming for this OCD-stricken fetishist. Please join in a few minutes: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

@C: a lot of the music on that record is anything but scary! and then it has that opener, "Adolph Hitler"
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

Very glad to hear, Zonk
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

Very excited for this show, LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm melinda:

Thanks for the soothing and transportive show, Evan!
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

my very great pleasure, Melinda!
Avatar 9:57pm still b/p:

Here's a little bean of relevance and irrelevance at once (I don't think the sailors had these records):
Just yesterday, I was thinking centuries-old Polynesian sea awareness and navigating capabilities...crazy interesting.

Excellent show..crazy enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm JtotheK:

thanks for the tunes, Flash!
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth∅:

"fire goddess"...i thought you had played that before, Evan, but i just see another artist's rendition. (which i curiously didn't give a gold star...maybe i came on board late?)
Avatar 9:58pm geezerette:

Funny and relaxing,(mostly)), show. Thanks, Evan!
Avatar 9:59pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, and this sounds like the same rhythm track!
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

They were pretty incredible, b/p! thanks, and I'm very glad you enjoyed

Thank you, J-K! My pleasure, Geezerette!

How have I not played Surfmen's Fire Goddess yet!
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Evan Stellar program!
  10:07pm Severin:

thanks for making my last few hours sexier, it was fantastic. Greetings from 4 am in the hell Rome, Italy.
