I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm tmoyo:

Hi Mayuko and listeners! Cool pic of the Kamiokande with the tiny 3 figures in the corner.
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

Hello, Sem, tmoyo! Great to have you all here!
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

Kamiokande so cool. Wanna visit there someday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm tmoyo:

Yes! play with neutrinos.
Avatar 12:10pm fred:

I finally got to see saw Minami Deutsch last Saturday. They're as great live as I hoped they would be
  12:12pm rbrt:

I don't know how I feel going that deep underground though lol
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

@fred I'd expect Minami Deutsch to be good live too! Glad you enjoyed!
Avatar 12:20pm fred:

A new Kouhei Matsunaga release? I hope he'll tour and stop nearby
Avatar 12:21pm Mayuko:

Yes! So exciting re: NHK new album!!!!!
  12:45pm Ike:

Good afternoon!
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon to you too, Ike!
  12:49pm Rickwaukee:

was that Billy Joel's Pressure?
  12:56pm Ike:

I got that reference! I've watched a little bit of the English NHK channel now and then. (It's so weirdly earnest!)
  1:03pm rbrt:

or maybe we're living multiple parallel lives at once.........
Avatar 1:03pm fred:

Yeah to three hours!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm tmoyo:

I like that idea rbrt
Avatar 1:06pm Mayuko:

?!?!?!?!What was Billy Joel?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Scraps:

mm boy.
  1:06pm Rickwaukee:

Jeff knows where you're coming from https://youtu.be/JTSk5cbaZso?t=6s
  1:06pm rbrt:

@tmoyo :D
Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

@Ike oh! And actually that TV station featured WFMU this past summer was NHK, wasn't it.
  1:09pm Rickwaukee:

play the Gilbert - play the Joel - I think you will hear it
Avatar 1:10pm Mayuko:

@rbrt hm! It didn't occur to me to think that way - but that is totally possible!!
Avatar 1:10pm Mayuko:

Hola, Scraps! glad you awake! How are you feeling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Scraps:

rbrt, your gif is a radio, right? At first, I thought it was a smokestack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm tmoyo:

I'm gonna go to bed soon due to jetlag. Just got back from Wisconsin yesterday visiting my sister. First time in that state, enjoyed the spaciousness, and feeling disoriented and a bit claustrophobic in the Tokyo metropolitan area...
Catch the remainder of the show in the archives!
Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee I will go through the entire Billy Joel collection in WFMU library after my show to solve this mystery!!!!!!
  1:12pm rbrt:

night tmoyo!
  1:12pm rbrt:

scraps lol yeah but it can be a smoke stack if you like
  1:13pm rbrt:

billy joel pressure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Scraps:

Mayuko, barely awake! Like... yawn, swoon....
  1:13pm Rickwaukee:

Oh god, no, just the song 'Pressure'! The keyboard 'bridge'(?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm tmoyo:

night rbrt!
Avatar 1:14pm fred:

The WFMU Billy Joel collection should be tiny
Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo I'm sure Tokyo felt crazy crowded especially after mid-west! Thanks for listening and good night!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Scraps:

Pressure: the 80s! Could not be from any other decade!
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

Hm, maybe I heard the song too since Billy was popular in Japan too, but no titles are connected to any of his songs I heard in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Scraps:

I’ll defend Joel, though: he knows hooks. Like Hall & Oates.
Avatar 1:21pm glenn:

and he still knows how to make babies, the old lech.
Avatar 1:21pm northguineahills:

I always forget Saturdays=Mayuko.

Being a typical hipster, I do like Billy Joel's earlier works.
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

If WFMU Billy Joel collection turns out to be huge I can do a whole show dedicated to him.
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

Hellos glenn, and ngh!!
Avatar 1:22pm fred:

I confess I sometimes go to yard sales hoping to find a Billy Joel cassingle for Dan Bodah
Avatar 1:22pm glenn:

no, that's okay.
Avatar 1:22pm northguineahills:

Focus Group!
  1:23pm Rickwaukee:

Gosh, I don't know how well that will go over in New York - LOL JUST KIDDING
Avatar 1:24pm fred:

You can dedicate a show to Billy Joel, just don't play him
Avatar 1:24pm glenn:

that said, the video for uptown girl never fails to make me happy.
Avatar 1:24pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Scraps:

Lech: lots of people would be a lech if people were interested!
  1:26pm rw:

Love this Reich tape thing.
  1:27pm rw:

And it's as old as I am!
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

People love Billy Joel! Billy Joel brings heat to my comment board! I think that's how we should make money at the station!!

Thanks for tuning in, rw!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Scraps:

Uptown Girl: the whole album An Innocent Man is pretty great. Sorry!
  1:28pm rbrt:

mayuko trying to hypnotise us
Avatar 1:30pm fred:

Great dance piece based on Come Out: youtu.be...
The whole show is on Steve Reich music, Piano Phase, Come Out, Violin Phase, Clapping Music
  1:31pm rw:

Mayuko, Thank you! Always glad when I can hear your show. Sometimes it's tough to coordinate my Saturday to include the Vertigo.
Avatar 1:31pm northguineahills:

I think this was the first phase shift piece I heard, and led me to have fun w/ my 4-track recorder in college.

@fred: that track list is the playlist of the Reich cd comp where I first got Come Out.
Avatar 1:32pm northguineahills:

wait, violin phase wasn't included. that was another rec.
  1:33pm rw:

Thanks fred for that link. Trying to synch the audio now...
  1:34pm rw:

It's not easy...
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

@rw totally understand, I sometimes have hard time including vertigo myself, haha. Then again you get to be treated with Zzzzzero hour instead so it's all good.
Avatar 1:35pm fred:

@ngh: That Anne Teresa De Keermaeker piece was how I got hooked on Steve Reich's music, though not my first exposure to it (that came from Mats Ek)
Avatar 1:45pm northguineahills:

I just renewed my Wire subscription which expired Aug 2016, so, I should get this comp soon. I love all things Lucier!
Avatar 1:47pm fred:

Speaking of dance, Hofesh Shechter will be at BAM soon: www.bam.org...
Not as mind-blowing as Political Mother, but real good stuff
  1:49pm Rickwaukee:

Gilbert at 7:34: https://youtu.be/rbPrEFgGEZ0?t=7m35s
Joel at 0:12: https://youtu.be/Iyv905Q2omU?t=12s
Avatar 1:50pm Mayuko:

@ngh I will check out more of Alvin Lucier's stuff! I didn't know him but been enjoying this track a lot.
  1:51pm Rickwaukee:

At first I thought it was an ABBA riff. OK I'm done.
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee ok so now I don't need to spend the whole rest of my afternoon today going through WFMU's possibly huge Billy Joel collection. I will see what you meant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Ike:

I've been listening to FMU since 1993 but I can say with some certainty that Sugai Ken track is surely in the top 10 weirdest things I've ever heard here. (That's a compliment.) ;)
Avatar 1:54pm fred:

I signed up to the Yarn/Wire mailing list because of this show. They seem to have no plan to play nearby, but if they do, I'll be there
Avatar 1:57pm northguineahills:

Great Oases track! Didn't think Liam had it in him! ;)

Thanks Mayuko! have a brilliant weekend!
  1:59pm rbrt:

fake fan?
  1:59pm Rickwaukee:

M - it is more than one Oasis (plural) [oh-ey-seez]
  2:00pm rbrt:

haha my sympathy goes out to anyone being buried right now
  2:01pm Rickwaukee:

I had to look it up to be sure :\
Avatar 2:02pm northguineahills:

Hurrazah, bonus Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Scraps:

My late wife Velma LOVED fans. I still have several of them. Nostalgia.... Here’s one! Flutter, flutter, flutter, and.....close! It’s great.
  2:03pm Rickwaukee:

Doing 'goody-goody' chair dance - 1 more hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Ike:

Yay, extra hour! Also, to be fair, many native English speakers aren't too familiar with the plural of "oasis". That isn't used very often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Scraps:

Velma with fan!

  2:05pm rbrt:

honestly I didn't know that was plural form of oasis
Avatar 2:05pm fred:

@Ike: I guess it's part of the usage game for oases, you rarely see more than one at the same time, and if you do, chances are none are real
  2:08pm Rickwaukee:

The history of the band member line ups of the band Oasis is a study in varying Oases.
Avatar 2:09pm northguineahills:

@scraps: that's fantastic (beautiful)!

@rbrt: Me neither, and I'm been reading on the etymological history of the English history lately.

I have a bunch of old fans I got in the equivalent of flea markets on military bases in Japan when I was a kid, but unlike everything else at my disposal, I've never used them a sound source out of fear I'd damage them.
Avatar 2:10pm northguineahills:

Good one, Rickwaukee!
Avatar 2:11pm Mayuko:

@Ike I hope that makes Ken Sugai happy! But I wonder what the weirdest track I ever heard could be? I thought Faust was so weird and therefore got excited when I was 19 and first heard them, but I don't feel like they're that "weird" any more... though I still like them...
Avatar 2:14pm fred:

What was Kunitaka Sato playing? It doesn't sound like any instrument I know. Some kind of zither?
Avatar 2:15pm Mayuko:

@Scraps wow, she is beautiful! not only the fan but everything like seashell necklace and all that look great on her too.
Avatar 2:20pm Mayuko:

The instrument Kunitaka was playing is called Amami Tategoto - the Japanese word Tategoto is I think Harp in English, but it looks more like zither to me. img13.shop-pro.jp...
Avatar 2:21pm Mayuko:

Amami is an island in southern Japan.
  2:22pm rbrt:

I like this Lesser Sunda, has a curious pace to it
Avatar 2:23pm Mayuko:

I just wish English could get rid of all plurals. How can one pronounce the difference of Oasis and Oases, Smith and Smiths etc.
Avatar 2:26pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko, I'll have to investigate Amani music
Avatar 2:26pm Mayuko:

@rbrt I believe they're from Toronto. Just bought this recently and like it a lot too, but didn't know about em...
  2:28pm rw:

Ha! I wouldn't have recognized the word Oases as the plural of Oasis written out, though I would have known if spoken.
  2:29pm rbrt:

@Mayuko thanks! I'm gonna look them up
Avatar 2:29pm Mayuko:

@fred Takao Morishima could be the only one left who play Amami Tategoto now. I guess I don't know anything about it though, maybe some other young people are learning and/or there could be other obscure players.
  2:29pm Rickwaukee:

I hope this record label name is right. Lovely pickin.
  2:30pm rw:

Thanks for this extra hour. It's helping me sit at the computer and get some work done!
  2:30pm rbrt:

it's interesting how like a certain instrument just goes away because no one plays it!
  2:31pm Rickwaukee:

I just lost my mother and this show is a balm.
Avatar 2:33pm fred:

I sure hope some people are learning, it would be a shame to lose yet another part of the music that should be out there
  2:34pm rbrt:

one day in the future there will only be a couple of people who play the archaic primitive electric guitar
  2:35pm rbrt:

sorry Rickwaukee :(
  2:37pm Rickwaukee:

thanks rbrt. rbrt was my dads name but with vowels :)
  2:37pm Rickwaukee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Ike:

@fred@2:05, I was thinking the same thing myself -- an oasis is solitary by definition. If you see oases, they are probably all mirages.
Avatar 2:43pm northguineahills:

Love Skip James, now I gotta look up J.D. Short.

@Rickwaukee: Damn, I'm sorry, I hope you heal well and WFMU helps.
Avatar 2:43pm glenn:

not a chance. the electric guitar will always be with us.
Avatar 2:46pm fred:

@Ike: is that your real cat in that avatar?
Avatar 2:47pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee I like that record label's name. I am so sorry to hear about your mother.
  2:47pm Rickwaukee:

thanks northguineahills. my sister's name is northgui . . . no I don't have a sister
Avatar 2:48pm northguineahills:

Thanks Mayuko, I may not get to the board before 3. Thanks for gifting us w/ the extra hour. Enjoy a loverly Saturday everyone!
  2:49pm rbrt:

love that song
  2:49pm Rickwaukee:

Thank you, Mayuko. Thank you.
  2:53pm Rickwaukee:

Wow this sounded so 1984 and now it sounds so 1991
  2:54pm Rickwaukee:

lol I didn't catch the track change, but I nailed the '91 yo.
Avatar 2:55pm fred:

  2:59pm Rickwaukee:

Avatar 3:00pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko for delaying ice cream for us
  3:00pm rbrt:

A toast to billions more shows, Mayuko.
