Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 31, 2017 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Sparks  Missionary Position   Favoriting Live in the WFMU Studio        Recorded by Scott Konzelmann, Mario Santana, mix by Ernie Indradat. An incredible show planned as Brian welcomes the one and only Sparks, performing live in full glory as a 7-piece band at WFMU! Formed in 1972, brothers Ron and Russell Mael established their own turf with willfully eccentric, inventive pop music that has been spread out over 24 albums including their latest, Hippopotamus. Prolifically melding cultural satire with numerous musical traditions, Sparks have applied classicism and often theatricality with glam, new wave, disco, artrock, and baroque and bubblegum pop, consistently working within the mainstream while skimming around its edges as defined outsiders. They've worked with producers like Todd Rundgren, Giorgio Morodor, and Tony Visconti, and have had top 5 hits all over the UK and Europe; they've appeared in 80's teen flicks and created soundtrack work and have even been commissioned by the Swedish government to do a radio tribute to Ingmar Bergman. Collaborations and artists both musical and visual that they've influenced read like a guestlist to the most glamorous event you can imagine. Their current 2017 lineup touring Europe, the USA, and Japan are a full-on kickass rock band, and the results of their daylong pitstop and performance at the station is gonna be jawdropping on the radio. Afterwards, Brian chats with Ron and Russell! Absolutely not to be missed, true legends! Today's lineup: Ron Mael: piano, Russell Mael: lead vox, Stevie Nistor: drums, Zach Dawes: bass, Tyler Parkford: keyboards, backing vox, Evan Weiss: guitar, backing vox, Taylor Locke: guitar, backing vox. Sincere thanks to the band, crew, soundman Colin Walker, Leo Lavoro at BMG and UK manager Sue at Republic for all the help in making this extraordinary event happen at WFMU! Thanks too to Gen Ken Montgomery for the radio spots! Sparks website. Thanks to @sparksofficial Twitter too for spreading the word.

I always tell people they're that band that was in that Timothy Bottoms movie, "Rollercoaster."

@UM: haha i love that scene that they're in. i was looking at amazon reviews of that movie just to see what people thought of them and people were referring to them as a hair metal band. hair metal!

did you guys know that beat the clock was the first song in the pop-hits-medley Stars on 45 which hit #1 on the Hot 100 in 1981? I was listening to that as part of a project i did where i listened to the 100 most popular songs of each year since the inception of the billboard charts and the random sparks reference made me jump

@tadpoles: agreed. the one i always come back to is "tits." he should have won all the songwriting awards for that one. it's like a play. i wish i could write something like that.

tadpoles, I don't think most of the music insiders/intelligentsia these days can find their butts with both hands, much lesss determine who is good at writing these word things.

@BronwynB... when you get their songs stuck in your head...they're delightfully stuck in your head!

Heavily influenced by Sparks was The Quick, one of my favorite hard-to-find bands.

This has certainly been a treat. Is there a trick coming up?

@rev: love that record so much. even the cover is amazing- so ahead of its time. when i was first introduced to it at 18 by a friend who bought it while we were record shopping, i wasn't ready for it. i thought it looked too cool for little old me. then three years later i saw their don kirshner show. never looked back
Avatar 4:52pm
BronwynB:

@ken: the trick is that next he's going to play Sporks, the alternate-reality version where ron sings and russell writes the songs

Dead right Brian. "Hippopotamus" didn't go up the UK charts for nothing. It's a brilliant new chapter from a great band.

Interestingly enough Cecile, they shared Sal Maida, a bassist in early years who did time in Roxy Music too. Sal has a book out now about his experiences in these bands (and Milk N Cookies too). hozacrecords.com...

Sno-Time at the Apollo:

@Brian Turner , @Cecile - Ron and Russell recently did a funny interview on Sirius with Steve Jones (Jonesy in true obnoxious, but amusing form) where they talked a little about their feelings towards Roxy Music. They were labelmates with them on Island back in the day and they felt like they were somewhat in competition with RM at the time. They kind of turned up their noses a little at first. Now, they readily admit to being big fans and highly respecting their work.

That's really cool. I like Sparks a lot, but I always slightly preferred Roxy's pathos and experimentation. But they are both superb bands.
