OK, turning off my radio now...oh..ok, I won't.

You've made the right decision, @UM, I swear.

I'm holding you to that.

uggh, it's legal to smoke at some bars around here if they pay for a permit. I smell like an ashtray, it's been 14 years since I remember ruining my clothes like that.

This is Theo Parrish! Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome aboard, @NGH and @Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH: Theo is a man of many sounds, all of them good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Uncle Michael:

I find it very hard not to go to bed ridiculously early just after DST ends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember those days, my hair smelling for days if i didn't wash out the old tobacco smoke. 'don't miss that much.
fortunately my preferred pub will never need that permit because they have an outside smoking area. (which is mostly used for herb smoking anyway)
Avatar 9:22pm
northguineahills:

I believe the pub 15 minute walk away is the only one that has a smoking permit, so, it attracts smokers. But, it was a fave of mine in college and it's one of the few that still has a dive appeal (and the dive prices).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
coelacanth∅:

i'd probably deal with it as well then under those circumstances
Avatar 9:26pm
northguineahills:

I do my leisure reading at pubs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Uncle Michael:

I wouldn't spend five minutes in a smoking establishment to win a bet.
Avatar 9:32pm
northguineahills:

Well, I quit smoking 19 years ago, so, it's still a good way to get my nicotine intake. :) (beer is $3, shots $2, for an old Irish bar, not the faux kind). Everywhere else here in FL has NYC prices.
  9:36pm
Gilly Siegel:

Smoking lounges are nasty establishments, try a hookah bar instead.
Avatar 9:44pm
northguineahills:

Hookah bars here are way overpriced, not like the Lebanese one in my old hood. It brings in the faux bourgeoisie/frat crowd .
Avatar 9:45pm
northguineahills:

(I live in a college town, where 1/3 of the population are students).
  9:47pm
Gilly Siegel:

My town is infested with these hookah bars and bong shops, also a college town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm

One time Dave Chappelle went to the small hookah bar in my college neighborhood.
Avatar 9:52pm

I'm still jealous Sam is now in NYC, and I'm not. At least I have the succor of knowing it's not as hip as when I was there last year ;)
Avatar 9:53pm

One time Dave Chapelle did a block party two blocks from my apt. I moved two weeks later to williamsburg b/c I kept on getting mugged coming home late from grad school.

Sam Segal:

@NGH: You'll be pleased to know that the following Tony Soprano quote often flits across my brain when I walk around NYC: " It’s good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I’m getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over."

Friend of mine worked at summer camp for a stretch of years. A newcomer to the circle of veteran staffers said they were always going on about how great and good-timey the bygone camp seasons & sessions were. He said, "You guys live in the past." One replied, "If you think WE live in the past, you should have been here LAST year!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Sam Segal:

Oh, man, @sbp, that's on point. As someone who worked at a summer camp for multiple summers, I can definitely relate to that kind of nostalgia pyramid scheme.
Avatar 10:15pm
still b/p:

I ran into it in high school, ran into in college, even a bit of it at a long-time job.....the characters, parties and antics were always so much richer and memorable...before I got there. Though I don't think I was the downshifting & dampening agent on my own...wait, maybe I was!
Avatar 10:20pm
still b/p:

But if anyone tells me that again anywhere (other than Kyrgyzstan), I'll say, "That's a load of bishkek."

i maybe didn't know how lucky i was when there was a scene i was part of here* just a few years ago and many of us knew full-well how good it was and that it wont last forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
coelacanth∅:

ngh @9.26 i do some leisure reading in the pub also. (i'm in the midst of 5 books right now, because different books are better for different situations)
...but people always want to talk to me when i'm reading. (..."what are you reeeaaading?" "it's so cool that you read in the bar..." "this is why i love this bar. people do things like read in here." "how can you read in a bar?".....)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

a bit of "fungiphobia", have we?
  10:42pm
melinda:

Did anyone else Google the fungus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Sam Segal:

I am learning about new phobias of mine every day. Recently, I discovered I have Trypophobia, a fear of "irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
coelacanth∅:

i'll do it. i'm not a-scared!
(i've seen slime mold and i don't understand the repulsion.)
  10:47pm
melinda:

Actually I can sort if relate to that, like if they're on skin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know if "fungiphobia" is officially a word...though i don't know why it wouldn't be.
Avatar 10:50pm
still b/p:

How do we find the image for viewing? ...testing boldness and beating fear by just going for it, making the leap -- a fungi jump.
  10:51pm
melinda:

One of the sights that made my skin crawl was a variety of frog that incubates its eggs in the skin on its back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah that's a little gross; or the various spiders that do the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Sam Segal:

Okay, now, this honestly could be my Trypophobia kicking in, but I find this image of Mycetozoa grotesque: static.panoramio.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know, still bp. i didn't get grossed out by a whole google-image page full of "mycetozoa". just looks like tiny mushrooms to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
coelacanth∅:

aw, Sam, those are cute!
  10:56pm
melinda:

That's pretty yucky.
Avatar 10:57pm
still b/p:

Like early gestating Michelin men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

they look like tiny puffball mushrooms, which - while i'm not tempted to try them, for some reason they've come up in culinary-oriented conversations lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Sam Segal:

Honestly, I could see how you might think of these as cute.
  10:58pm
melinda:

So curious was I that I attempted my first copy and paste on an iPod screen so I could see the grotesque fungi.
  10:59pm
melinda:

@ b/p haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

hahaha! i was just kidding about them being cute! i'm not one to ever call any vegetation cute, except in jest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
coelacanth∅:

(i know people who'd call them cute though)
  11:02pm
melinda:

I discovered a bunch of maggots inside my compost bucket after I put it by the curb this morning. It had gone an extra week due to storm disruption of service, hence the grossness.

Gah. Missed the Muhal while walking the dog. That'll learn me. Hi, Sam.

Howdy, @Jeff! Your dog is trying to sabotage you, there's no doubt about it.

Toured an organic mushroom growing operation earlier this year. Indoor racks of beautiful li'l 'shroom clusters growing from hunks of substrate. A few years back at a party a vegan chef served "chocolate" solid and drink made from fungi. Pretty good.

Dean:

This playlist's image prompts me to report that there's a new book worth your attention, Streets of the World: https://www.streetsoftheworld.com/ It comes with a touring exhibition and a web presence. But the book itself is compelling: photos of streets around the world presented for contrast and comparison.

Hey, wait. Josh Abrams...any relation to Muhal Richard?

I can answer my own question. Of course there is a relation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Ahoy, @G!
@Dean: Spiritual relation, yes. Blood relation, I don't believe so.
Avatar 11:26pm

I love street scenes. Looking at a larger version of the playlist image, I noted we got 3 guys in 3 pairs of patterned trousers. Because...1972.

Somewhere there's a startup raising maggots, not from houseflies, to process for protein-rich food.
Heard on BBC.
