Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Rich in Washington:

Commercial cassettes from big labels were hit and miss. I've got some 40 year old cassettes that still sound OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Rich in Washington:

It seems like most cassettes I owned that were on Warner Bros. from around the late 70s tended to use cheap tape stock. They didn't sound so good and/or would self destruct in short order.
  3:30pm
melinda:

@Rich yeah, I have one that's probably 40 too, which I just attributed to the magic power of Herb Alpert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
coelacanth∅:

Rich, (@3.27) i do too; and some that sounded shitty by the third play. it was my habit back then to immediaztely (after one listen) record cassette releases onto a tdk cassette. almost all of those still sound good, after 20-40 years.
Avatar 3:32pm
Tony Coulter:

Love this Heiner Goebbels track! Just got the 7" version even tho I have it in two other places.
Avatar 3:32pm

I have this Recommended sampler, with the glittery cover and everything! So great. That's how I discovered Stormy Six, everyone's favorite Italian prog-Marxist-folk band.

Avatar 3:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Jeff. Your debut is sounding great!
Avatar 3:35pm
Jeff Moore:

I remember hearing a Nakamichi repair dude tell me that decks which had been fed a steady diet of TDK SA had way less shedded-oxide crap in them than decks which had been eating inferior brands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
doctorjazz:

My recollection of commercial cassettes back in the day is that the high end of most of them was pretty much gone.
Avatar 3:35pm

Tony. Dude. Don't jinx it!
Avatar 3:36pm
Jeff Moore:

...and today Trio provides the cool-down from our fit of excitement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
coelacanth∅:

hey even the tdk-d was good. the sa was the bomb for sure, but the few (maybe 20-30) tdk-d that i had have held up beautifully. (most of the sa held up great, but not every one)
Avatar 3:37pm
northguineahills:

Leaving work early, thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
coelacanth∅:

...i did try a box or 2 of the tdk-ma, which was supposedly their best tape. none of them held up well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Gary:

Trio be likin the nonsense syllable songs
Avatar 3:42pm
Jshatan:

TDK-SA was the go to. The metal tapes, like the MA, were overpriced and short-lived.
  3:44pm
melinda:

Keep liking everything I hear from the Barnett-Vile combo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
doctorjazz:

The ones you bought and made your old tapes were better (even they lost highs over time); commercial pre recorded ones often were awful. My recollection anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
coelacanth∅:

Jeff @3.35 -that's interesting...and good news, though i did get sucked in to maybe 5 boxes of maxells, (as a compensation gift from druckers or crazy eddie's when they found a loophole in their "best price guarantee") and a few sony, basf, and others - all of which sucked then and suck worse now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
coelacanth∅:

one of the cassette decks i bought had a calibration feature, to get the best sound from each particular tape when recording. i told the guy i mostly used tdk-sa and he said then it's all set. that's the default calibration setting.
