"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

I never got a chance to hear this show when it was on before January. I have to say I was thrown off by the intro, but now it's an integral part of my Friday.

PEACE all. This neil rolnick is weird. It is "noise"?

I'll never forget the shock of iTunes telling me Peter, Paul, and Mary was "Rock n' Roll"

My 14 year old suffers from anxiety. What helps? Avoiding bad things? Facing your fears?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am

@Wild Neil, have you considered putting together a Lego kit?

I have several of them at my desk that I take apart and put back together on slow days.

@not a real doctor-every time I get my 7 year old one, I end up doing it, with one exception when I got him a simple one he was able to do about 90% of it and got only one thing wrong. Legos are awesome. I got my 7 year old a 1400 piece giant set.

Maybe word games or Sudoku puzzles? Verbal reassurances may help, too.

@wild neil therapy is helpful for me, but it depends on what the triggers are
Avatar 9:21am

I am in a 64 degree room wearing blue coveralls and a hat. This saves on the gas bill I am told. I offered to take on handyman projects (at which I kinda suck because I am a perfectionist) so I solicited information from an advertising department at at journal related to our field. What else can I do like THAT that can be accomplished with a computer?
@queems-what is the best single tool you have been given to combat your anxiety? Do you take meds? Not judging, just wondering and no need to answer if you are not comfortable.
Avatar 9:22am
Wild Neil:

Divus is pretty listenable too! Its so odd though...
Avatar 9:27am
duke:

I'm really liking this set
Avatar 9:29am
Wild Neil:

enrico rava reminds me of King Crimson when they do their abstract thing sorta.
  9:29am
queems:

@wild neil i used to take zoloft for ocd! it helped, but ultimately the side effects ended up being too much for me, and i never looked for anything to replace it. it took the edge off and really allowed me to take a breath before reacting, which is actually probably the best coping mechanism i learned. it's harder without the medication, but saying something like "this is out of my control and that is ok" helps. i'm not sure what causes your daughter's anxiety, but i think that it is a good tool for anyone to use, because we can only control so much of what happens to us and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that.
Avatar 9:29am
Wild Neil:

@John Allen-thank you for putting YEAR on recordings.

good morning, John! I want to thank you for turning me and my husband on to Grant Hart many weeks ago, when we lost him
Avatar 9:30am

@queems-thank you for point out my son can say that to himself to buy himself time to respond rather than react. That is something I forgot about!

@Wild Neil I was prescribed lexipro because I was having sleep problems due to anxiety. It didn't help, actually made my anxiety and sleep problems worse. The only thing that helped was changing jobs.

Morning all. Loving this set as well. Definitely gonna check out that Divus album. As long as we're thanking John for introducing us to stuff, the Mary Margaret O'Hara was a revelation last week. I think I've listened to Miss America a dozen times since then. Thanks!
Avatar 9:44am

Devin, she's incredible, but whatever happened to that guitar player. he should teamed up w/ John Martyn or someone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am

Fans of MMO'H and cinema buffs in general should check out Jem Cohen's film Museum Hours, in which she stars and also performs a couple of songs. I loved it, personally. Very atmospheric.

And here, ladies and gentlemen of the residential program, you'll see an excellent example of Stage 10 Record Collector's Disease, a diagnosis originally formulated by an expert at radio station WFMU. No, no, don't cry, fellows. I know it's terribly sad, but pull yourselves together. This poor subject ran out of things to collect and had to start collecting smooth jazz records due to his compulsion. Yes, yes, truly horrifying. There may also be a bit of Williamsburg Ironic Hipster Disease mixed in. Yes, I also thought this ran its course in 2010, but occasionally recurring outbreaks do happen.
Avatar 10:23am

John has a REALLY HARD job spinning new songs each week for 3 hours. NOBODY is perfect. Sometimes I HATE what is played on WFMU which is ok too.

@Crateslinger: Fridays are really excellent, and you still get Marty on the archives. The JA → Bryce → Sheila B. daytime run is stellar. I just want to tell my job, "Please stop scheduling shit every Friday at 1:00. Y'all can't impinge on Bryce's time!"
