Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, all. Let's kick this thing into the stratosphere!
If we're voting on the opening theme, I'd like to keep the current one, please.
Avatar 3:06pm The Contessa:

Me too, @Ken FHP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Rob Kopp:

5 years ago Paloma Faith won a Kinks cover contest with Sunny afternoon and was allowed to record the song again in the Konk studio with Ray Davies.
Avatar 3:07pm NotARealDoctor:

Happy Friday, my fellow SheilaBites! Hi Sheila! My favorite 3 hours of the week right here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm chris:

going with Ken FHP on this one: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  3:07pm doin'whimpets:

lovely musical selection as always, sheila. I really don't know why but this song always makes me want to listed to lonely digger...i don't even particularly like that song either
  3:07pm Cooh John:

Hello djsheilab and sophisticates all over the world. Let's get this party started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm BronwynB:

hello sheila and everyone!
Avatar 3:07pm Wild Neil:

Paloma Faith reminds me of Amy Winehouse.
Avatar 3:08pm NotARealDoctor:

We're voting on the theme? Did I miss an announcement?
Avatar 3:08pm CTEmpress:

See, Paloma Faith: always something to learn here!
Avatar 3:08pm NotARealDoctor:

@Wild Neil, I thought it was her until I looked at the Accu!
Avatar 3:08pm Cecile:

yeah, same here NotaRealDoc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Adrian in London:

Eveing all…
Avatar 3:09pm NotARealDoctor:

And for my 2 cents, I'm quite partial to the current. I've got it on my "Must Aquire" list for my record digging trips!
Avatar 3:09pm Wild Neil:

I try really hard at these comparisons, so @NotARealDoctor, thank you for self reporting! &Cecile! I guess she has some fancy musical term for having the same...color? timbre? voice as Amy Winehouse?
Avatar 3:10pm Cecile:

To me Amy seems to sing from the throat more. The notes seem swish around in Paloma's mouth more and she's more sibilant, if that makes any sense.
Avatar 3:10pm Wild Neil:

Gin Wigmore sounds kinda like AW. A very little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm BabyBear:

Oh my, I thought that I was going to have to miss SBB this week, but luckily the office Thanksgiving party didn't go too long. Rejoice!
Avatar 3:11pm Cecile:

Sorry, I knew Paloma wasn't Amy. I've listened to Amy way too much. I just didn't know about theme voting.
Avatar 3:11pm NotARealDoctor:

@Cecile, I see where you're coming from, but I kind of attributed that to the variability of Amy's voice depending on her sobriety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Guido from Cologne:

La Verne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm The Oscar:

Afternoon Sheila and Boommates!
Avatar 3:12pm Cecile:

Paloma also has a lot less world weariness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Scraps deSelby:

hey h’lo
Avatar 3:13pm Cecile:

hell, Leonard Cohen had a lot less world weariness compared to Amy Winehouse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm JtotheK:

lavern baker sure has a lot of great 45s.
Avatar 3:14pm NotARealDoctor:

Poor Amy. God rest her soul. :(
Avatar 3:14pm Cecile:

I miss that girl every day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm doctorjazz:

Hey all, Happy Friday!
Avatar 3:15pm djsheilab:

Wow....today it's a mult-tasking extravaganza here in Studio A. HELLO!!!! I got lotsa atmosphere for you later this afternoon, when the sun goes down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Rob Kopp:

It's dark here already
Avatar 3:16pm Cecile:

it's been gloomy all day.
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

Theme voting coming up as well!
Avatar 3:17pm Cecile:

Do you want to change your theme song again? I like your theme song. Unless it's getting changed to Hair the Dog by Nazareth. Then, hell yeah, change it.
Avatar 3:20pm djsheilab:

@Cecile Yeah, I was thinking change might be good. BUT...there's also the option to keep the same theme. Gonna play the three options later in the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Adrian in London:

Really like this Loma song. Very, uh, *atmospheric*!
  3:20pm Dave in Leicester:

sheila keep the theme it's the sound of the weekend beginning and gives me tingles
Avatar 3:22pm NotARealDoctor:

I'm open-minded, I want to hear the options. But I definitely love the current theme, so they'll have to be really good...
Avatar 3:22pm Cecile:

Oh, how I hope I get to vote for Hair of the Dog! I love cognitive dissonance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Today's communiqué had some ideas about the theme song. mailchi.mp...
  3:24pm iambasil:

I love this song,I love aaliyah and I love this version and I love you Sheila B for sharing this with us <3
Avatar 3:25pm Cecile:

I looked at the communique. I love Sophisticated Boom Boom, but it's a little on-the-nose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm The Oscar:

I would love to hear a dreamy girl-pop version of "Hair of the Dog."
Avatar 3:26pm Cecile:

I wonder if this is a nod to Lou Reed's former partner Sylvia? Lou wrote all those "says" songs.
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

Oscar, that needs to happen. Or Babymetal needs to do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Adrian in London:

Nice to see Kelly Lee Owens' LP getting lots of love in the end-of-year polls.
Avatar 3:30pm Cecile:

I have to go get the mail, but I am voting for the current theme if you are tallying.
  3:30pm P-90:

Haven't even opened today's communique yet, they tend to arrive in a breathless rush shortly before the show starts. Which is kinda cool: if one has a few minutes to read it while actually listening to the show, it's like the radio equivalent of reading the back of the cereal box while gorging on a big bowl of the yummy goodness inside!
  3:31pm Stephanie:

"Open ended series" is what I like to hear
  3:38pm matt in Peapack:

Just got into my car, tuned in and ready to listen. Hello everyone. Sheila B. You make my drive home from work oh so good. Keep it up!
  3:39pm Neil:

Even a tree can shed a tear is a great record. My favourite track is Marianne by GU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Passaic River Blues:

Maki Asakawa's "Shinkyoku B" from her "Cat Nap" album is a gem. Should pull that out again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm doctorjazz:

Ella! Louis! DA BEST! (This is an early pairing of them).
  3:41pm Neil:

And I thinknk it's the first in a series of Japanese compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

JazzInsights on iTunesU says Louis sang before he played...MamaCass weren't too bad @ this either...
Avatar 3:43pm CTEmpress:

Tutti Hill!!!!!!
Avatar 3:44pm djsheilab:

RRNov63—The Mama Cass version is pretty fantastic indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm The Oscar:

It's funny-- a lot of albums for me are tied to the period of time my parents happened to have the cassette in their cars. That Ella/Louie is my mom's car, December of (I believe) 1992.
  3:44pm Neil:

I love Maki Asakawa but it's hard to get her records in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm doctorjazz:

If I remember correctly, there were 2 famous Verve albums Louie and Ella made in the mid 50's, this was from a session a few years earlier.
Avatar 3:45pm Number Six:

Hello, Sheila B. & All!
Avatar 3:45pm djsheilab:

Avatar 3:51pm NotARealDoctor:

Avatar 3:52pm djsheilab:

Hey Monica! Quite lovely sounds on that one, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...reminded of Cesaria Evora...which is welcome indeed...
Avatar 3:58pm dale:

hello sheila - your program has the best block of music on the radio hands down. the opening of this anne peebles reminded me of babs 'i am a woman in love' (yes, it is a guilty pleasure but anything written by the bee gees is).
Avatar 3:59pm Cecile:

I have this song, but I seem to remember this being a lot more rough than it sounded today.
Avatar 3:59pm northguineahills:

It's your show, I don't want my subjective experience to influence what you do. Whatever you do, we'll love it!
Avatar 4:02pm TDK60:

Haven't been here at this show in a while. Groovin'...
Avatar 4:03pm northguineahills:

I listen to all of my records from beginning to end. And at least once a day, I listen to one or four of my recs in alphabetical order (more on the weekends). The last time it took me 8+ years to finish.
Avatar 4:03pm CTEmpress:

Holy Moly this Shirley Ellis is outta sight! WOW killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Rob Kopp:

@TDK60: must have been in the cassette time!
Avatar 4:04pm ncjay:

this Shirley is truly fine, an instant favorite!
Avatar 4:05pm Cecile:

this might not be a bad theme...
Avatar 4:06pm djsheilab:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm listener james from westwood:

One New Year's Eve ages ago, one of the basic cable stations played this with the lyrics along the bottom. They followed it w/ Blues Brothers. Fucking amazing musical night.
  4:10pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

Good morning/evening!
Avatar 4:10pm Cecile:

Hairspray (the original) gave me that Grease feeling. And all the songs were actual records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm BronwynB:

@Cecile: Yes! But I am so addicted to true crime shows I even watched the silly Law and Order about the Menendez Bros and now I have nothing to feed my addiction until American Crime Story: Versace comes out ;(
Avatar 4:11pm Cecile:

I literally squeed when Alaska won Drag Race All Stars wearing the bug dress from Hairspray.
Avatar 4:12pm Cecile:

I have to watch that Law and Order one, it looks History Channel Houdini movie crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm BennettCap:

Stockard Channing was in her 30s playing a teenage girl. The woman who played Marty, another Pink Lady, was only 19.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm BronwynB:

Except I just googled Mindhunter and that one looks great, thanks Cecile :D
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

Wow, this is on Ninja Tune! Rather poppy for them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm BronwynB:

@Cecile: it is so fun. Edie Falco is great, and the contrast between the dull underacting of the guy playing the older brother and the wild overacting of the guy playing the younger brother is endlessly fascinating. And there's a crazy therapist who puts Dr. Landy to shame!
Avatar 4:13pm djsheilab:

BennettCap—I think that's what I loved about Rizzo. She was truly knowing :)
Avatar 4:14pm Cecile:

It is amazing, and I don't generally like stuff that stylized. It's set in 1977 and they only made a couple of music mistakes.
Avatar 4:15pm Cecile:

Bronwyn, I can truly say I despise everyone involved with that case, but still follow it. It's such a trainwreck.
Avatar 4:15pm dale:

i know stockard was 'up there.' i liked older women then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm BronwynB:

haha, i love good music supervision! musical anachronisms always drive me insane. like i love the movie pirate radio but still haven't forgiven it for using "father and son" in "1966"
  4:16pm DC:

Hello all! SBB sounding great, really enjoyed that Nabihah Iqbal, and this Oddnesse now too! Glad to tune in
Avatar 4:16pm Cecile:

I KNOW. Someone told me about the Stranger Things metal mixtape and half of the stuff wasn't even recorded close to the 80s
Avatar 4:16pm Cecile:

or metal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm BronwynB:

@Cecile: yeah, even the victims in that case were awful. the show is very sympathetic towards the brothers and their defense attorney, which is odd but definitely a bold tack to take, and definitely distinguishes it from american crime story where it was pretty clear they thought OJ did it and marcia clark/chris darden were the heroes (although johnnie cochran is kind of an antihero)
Avatar 4:17pm markr:

This Oddnesse track is really dreamy and beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Guido from Cologne:

clicky star 4 Oddnesse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm BronwynB:

i have a lot of opinions about true crime shows
Avatar 4:17pm markr:

Wow, this Liz Phair record was in heavy rotation chez moi lo these many decades ago, then I let it drop out of sight. Thanks for the reminder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Passaic River Blues:

@BronwynB: any other recommendations? I am tempted to rewatch the Helen Mirren-era "Prime Suspect" series, but am thinking I should hold off.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm The Oscar:

@steveo Ditto. Love the Girlysound version of this song too-- very different, with fake airline announcements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm BronwynB:

I loved Liz Phair's "Why Can't I" when I was 10. Then as an adult I fell in love with Exile in Guyville. Then a few years later I found out it was the same person and was like "wtf". And I read the reviews for her pop album in '04 and felt terrible because everyone hated it and said it was her downfall and I loved it...but it was targeted towards little girls, or at least the single was, and apparently it worked. I used to jump up and down on my bed singing it into my hairbrush.
Avatar 4:20pm Cecile:

PRB, did you ever watch the British State of Play series? It's more about journalism but there is a ton of crime in it.
Avatar 4:21pm Cecile:

I kind of missed all the phases of Liz Phair.
Avatar 4:21pm markr:

OK I dared step away from your fantastic radio program long enough to check out "I Used To" and you're correct, Ms. B., it's wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm BronwynB:

@Bronwyn I had a similar experience-- thanks to the weirdness of the filesharing era, the first Liz Phair I heard was the Girlysound tapes. I tried describing it to friends who only knew the '00s pop stuff, and we were literally convinced we were talking about two different artists!

If'n I ever had a radio show, the theme song would definitely be Ottawan's "Crazy Music for Crazy People" & would also be the name of the show.

Hi, Sheila B! If you're definitely going to change, I'd vote for the Sophisticated Boom Boom song (I admire the sentiment behind the 1st one, but as a listener, it might be kind of trying to listen to every week). STaying w/ the current one would also be fine. Thanks for all of your great music!!

  4:39pm JasonInBoston:

Chrysalis is AMAZING! In my opinion-waaaay to heavy and topical though.
Sophisticated Boom Boom is great but pigeon-holes the time period.
The current theme is groovy 60s but sounds fresh and contemporary at the same time. It's also indicative of the vairety. I say keep this one. I get a little chill of excitement whenever I hear it. Also-it's the most SOPHISTICATED-sounding of all songs, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Guido from Cologne:

the Sophisticated Boom Boom instrumental track would be great.
You could talk over it.
Avatar 4:39pm ncjay:

Existing opening song yes, "SBB" maybe, Sebastian Tellier no. I agree with the poster above that the existing opener is the best beginning to the weekend I could ask for.

The current theme is a classic, and it does carry some of the vibes of the show. Always a good choice. Personally, I like the dramatic stance of the chrysalis, and I agree that every little thing we can do helps right now. So there's a vote for option one!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm RomanDogBird:

I say stick with the current theme, but would you consider switching it up during the summer perhaps? Like, I could see the Shangri-Las for summer, the current one for the rest of year. I like option 1 as well, especially the way you can segue into a song at the end but I don't know how well it would fit.

The Tellier is a little bit more of a clear message for people who aren't familiar with the program. I digress. Great single of the week there from Oh Pep!
