Polish Roots Revival Special Featuring Kapela Maliszów Live at WOMEX

There's a booming folk and roots music revival in Poland. And the fiddle-driven family trio Kapela Maliszów is one of the most compelling bands on the scene.

They have a superb new album, Wiejski Dżaz - Village Jazz - on Poland's adventurous Unzipped Fly label. And they join us this week for an exclusive live session, recorded in Poland last month at the WOMEX world music expo.

Join us for a very special session with this exceptional group, plus lots more great new roots music from Poland!

More about Kapela Maliszów c/o their management company, Siaba Music (which works with several excellent new-roots artists from Poland):

The Malisz family hail from Męcina Mała, a small village in Beskid Niski region of the Western Carpathians. The family orchestra, Kapela Maliszów, comprises the multi-instrumentalist Jan Malisz with daughter Zuzanna on vocals and percussion and son Kacper on violin and basolia. The rich variety of traditional folk songs and dance music from Gorlice county are the basis of their repertoire as well as the inspiration for their original compositions, characterised by fiery, trance-like mazurkas driven by the precociously proficient violin playing of Kacper Malisz and the organic improvisatory interplay of a family brought up on music. Jan Malisz was himself taught the basics of a variety of instruments by his father Jozef and today, as well as playing them, he builds violins, hurdy-gurdys, nyckelharpas and pipes in his workshop.

Photos above of Kapela Maliszów’s WFMU WOMEX session by Katie Gentile. Thanks to Katie for helping out with our session, and to Paul Bräuer of WOMEX, and also to our illustrious engineer Sigtor Kjetså from NRK assisted by Janusz from Polskie Radio at the radio studio of WOMEX 17. The WOMEX radio studio is a cooperative undertaking by Polskie Radio (Poland) with EURORADIO of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), RBB (Germany), WDR (Germany), and NRK (Norway).

What did you use to field record 1: Voice 2: Music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Rob W:

This is actually a studio session mr_mike - the WOMEX conference and EBU (European Broadcast Union) put up a temporary studio that's available for radio sessions and interviews during the conference. Big national broadcasters get first dibs but DJs from independent stations can sign up for time too. And WOMEX provides the engineers - it's pretty cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm katie:

It was cool and convenient. As one of your regular roadies, it was great to have a session that required no labor (other than photography). And national broadcasters from around Europe were scheduled around you. And, they all knew you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Rob W:

Yes well Katie, it's a small world out there where radio geekdom and world music geekdom collide! But it is great rubbing shoulders with kindred spirits from around the world at WOMEX.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm maestroso:

This is really great Rob. Thanks for bringing it to us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm katie:

Sounds great. Now where do I find the yummy Polish pumpkin soup and dark beer to go with the music?
  7:37pm Paddy MeBoy:

epic! thanks Rob.
  7:38pm Paddy MeBoy:

How did you come to be included in this bands set and interview?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Bas NL:

Thank you Kapela Maliszow! Fantatic music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Rob W:

Paddy, I arranged the interview - they played a separate set for the public at WOMEX. But I had seen them at a festival in Malaysia of all places (the Rainforest World Music Festival) and that's where I decided that I wanted to have them as guests on my show someday if I ever could!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wow, thanks for sticking with it and making it happen. This is so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Rob W:

I may forget a face, but I never forget a band!
