Live performance and chat with The World of Captain Beefheart (L to R: Jordan Shapiro: keyboards, bkg. vocals /Jesse Krakow: bass, bkg. vocals /Nona Hendryx: lead vocals /Richard Dworkin: drums /Gary Lucas: guitar)

Giving a few new spins to the music of Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart is a natural move for Guitarist Gary Lucas, who was a part of that world for a time. And who better to breathe new life into the Captain's vocals than the Soul Diva Nona Hendryx, founding member of Labelle and a much in demand singer. On a new 12-song disc, Hendryx and Lucas energetically dive into tunes from throughout Beefheart's catalog, with helped along the way by Drummer Richard Dworkin (Microscopic Septet), Bassist (and former WFMU host) Jesse Krakow and Keyboardist Jordan Shapiro. Nona Hendrix and Gary Lucas, along with their bandmates, played live and discussed how this all came together.

Didn't Zappa and Beefheart collaborate on an album? Something about potato heads or other?

Irene Trudel:

Yes, The Cap'n did collaborate with Zappa on the album Hot Rats. Maybe I'll dig it up for later.

I've always enjoyed "Clear Spot" by the good captain.

The show is off to an amazing start. I love the way it began -- as a seamless segue from "The Weekly World Blues" into the land of Beefheart. Very hip. I LOVE YOU, YOU BIG DUMMY!!
  9:31pm
St Joe:

that was Bongo fury iirc.

Potato head Bobby was a friend of mine....

@ultradamno has it right. I was thinking of Muffin Man. did they work on Hot Rats together too?

He sings on Willie The Pimp on Hot Rats

Peter K.:

Beefheart sings on one track of "Hot Rats" ("Willie the Pimp"). He later briefly toured with Zappa, and "Bongo Fury" was recorded on that tour.
Avatar 9:34pm
Sean B.:

Shit, that's news to me. I didn't know The Capt. had anything to do with Hot Rats. My favorite Zappa....Uncle Meat is up there though.

St Joe:

Advance Romance is a fine track from BFury.

great show is always Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

Once asked about Pere Ubu sounding like The Magic Band, Beefheart dismissively said "well, they try". He also called The Residents "awful" and "trash poets" (from some old issue of Creem)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm

(re: Wolf)...though that didn't stop him from covering "Evil"

this cut is an all-time great..............one of Zappa's best albums, some of his best solos... Sugar Cane Harris, the Capt. as good as it gets !! Check out the gee tah at the end... thanks for playing !!

No worries. Has there ever been a Zappa-dedicated show on WFMU? I would appreciate
more of this greatness! Owned the record at one point and am only learning to appreciate it tonight.
Makes sense we named our daughter Irene...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Irene Trudel:

Haven't listened to it in some time. Willie the Pimp was the theme song John Narucki played for his WFMU show. I grew to loathe it because I heard it so much. Time has been a little kinder to the son.
  10:33pm
don:

Maybe a Beefheart expert with a better memory than mine can clarify something. I attended the Beefheart Town Hall show in, I think, 1973 and I believe Bob Seger opened, who was preceded by a magician named Bradley Fields. The crowd treated him poorly, telling HIM, the magician, to disappear.
At some point, I think Gary Lucas reviewed this show. What is strange is that a tape I've heard from this show has the Captain telling "Mr. Zoot Horn Rollo to hit that long lunar note, etc.," during "..Beans..", but I think Alex Snouffer had replaced Zoot for this tour. Am confused. Anyone out there who went to this show?
  10:40pm
St Joe:

Yes. I remember John Naruckis shows. Was a guest of a guest of his, in the basement at Uppsala. Loved that great papier machie(?) dinosaur!

Some of these Beefheart questions would best be answered by Gary Lucas himself. He has a facebook page, where I suspect he'd see it first: www.facebook.com...

@Irene - (back now from driving) It'd be cool to find out what some of the guests on Minor Music are doing today.

By the way, the previous Beefheart project Gary was involved with was Fast 'N' Bulbous, with Philip Johnston and other members of The Microscopic Septet. The archive is here: wfmu.org...
