I love chipmunk vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm

Not a huge Oswalt fan, but his bit on what it sounds like when you slow down the Chipmunks' Christmas song down is fkn hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm

People Like Us and Ken play the slowed down Chipmunks a lot!

cool thanks Uncle Michael :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Webhamster Henry:

You know, I really like Mort Shuman's translations/adaptations of these Brel tunes. He did an eponymous concept album that was kind of gruesome (he recites Brecht's "Children's Crusade" and "About the Drowning Girl"), with a few Brel tunes interspersed with his own originals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Uncle Michael:

I think Scott was the first to record the Shuman translations.True?
  8:59pm
listener james from westwood:

All hail stories, musically inspired or not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Doug Schulkind:

Home from class. Hello (young) music lovers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Uncle Michael:

All hail Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
BronwynB:

@WHenry: I love Shuman's translations of the Brel songs. They're faithful (as far as I can tell) but also hugely clever and moving in their own right. I'll always love Mort Shuman and Eric Blau for enabling non-Francophones to appreciate Brel's songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
BronwynB:

@Uncle Michael: I think so, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
BronwynB:

@james: glad you like the stories :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
BronwynB:

Hi Doug!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Webhamster Henry:

Shuman wrote them for "Jaques Brel is Alive And Well...", which he starred in, but had been friends with Brel and kind of had done a few already. He was already famous for writing lyrics for Doc Pomus. Eric Blau's book on the show is really fascinating! I can poke around to find recordings that predate the OST.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
BronwynB:

i love jacques brel is alive and well. when i was in college i wrote and directed a new version that had a storyline, which is totes illegal but it was super fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Webhamster Henry:

And you know my favorite version of "Some Velvet Morning", right?
wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
BronwynB:

i really really love jacques brel guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah, it seems the off-Broadway cast album would predate Walker's recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
BronwynB:

@WHenry: I haven't heard that version! I will have to check that out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Webhamster Henry:

Jacque Brel really, really loved Man of La Mancha, and translated, produced and sang in the French version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
BronwynB:

@Uncle Michael: Actually Scott recorded some of the Shuman versions before the cast album was released (for example Jackie, which came out in 1967, a year before the cast album)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Uncle Michael:

My fave is Lee and Nancy. Can't help it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
BronwynB:

@WHenry: I know!! I love his painfully earnest French rendition of The Impossible Dream!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Uncle Michael:

Jackie is just killer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's a very adaptable tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Doug Schulkind:

If I may paraphrase Stephen Sondheim:

Here's to the Lydias who Lunch.
Everybody laugh.
Lounging in their caftans
And planning a brunch
On their own behalf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Webhamster Henry:

Irwin's "Next!" is also commendable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
BronwynB:

@Uncle Michael: jackie is my favorite scott walker song AND my favorite brel song (it helps that it's the first song by either of them i ever heard)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Uncle Michael:

In the Walker film "30 Century Man" it's claimed that he was the first to record Brel in English, so that makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
BronwynB:

@WHenry: i love irwin's version of next. i just love that he did that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Uncle Michael:

I can have no favorite Scott Walker song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
BronwynB:

@Uncle Michael: that's a great film. i love how everyone goes on about how great his late-period stuff is, except for marc almond, who's just like "are you all insane? this is awful!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Webhamster Henry:

Let's do Brel is Alive And Well at Monty Hall! Fund the station for a few years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Uncle Michael:

And Lulu, who just wants to know if he's still cute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
BronwynB:

@WHenry: omg yes!!!! dibs on "marieke"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Webhamster Henry:

We need someone with Mort's Muttonchops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Webhamster Henry:

Marieke: doing for Flemish what Michelle did for French.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
BronwynB:

hahaha the kids who were in the aforementioned jacques brel show i directed in high school hated me for making them sing in flemish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Uncle Michael:

Were they all secret Walloons?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
BronwynB:

Uncle Michael, you are teaching me so many things tonight! This is my first time hearing of the Walloons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
BronwynB:

also i meant i directed a jacques brel show in college, not high school. would have been way too intense for high school
Avatar 9:23pm
glenn:

because of course, high school is the least intense four years ever.
Avatar 9:23pm
glenn:

although it was five years when i attended.
Avatar 9:24pm
glenn:

lo these many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm amazed by anyone that did more than pop zits and smoke dope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
BronwynB:

true, high school can be intense and at my high school we did a production of chicago that included teenage girls doing suggestive dances in their underwear so what am i saying.
Avatar 9:24pm
glenn:

i always had a remarkably clear complexion.

anyway, i spent most of my spare time playing euchre for money.
Avatar 9:29pm

which i suppose is technically gambling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
BronwynB:

all very valuable ways to spend one's high school experience! i mostly sang in all the choirs and cried a lot
Avatar 9:30pm
glenn:

at the same time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
BronwynB:

occasionally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Uncle Michael:

I want a shirt that says "This shirt's not big enough for both of us."
Avatar 9:47pm
glenn:

well, it's about damn time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
BronwynB:

i can't decide whether something for the girl with everything or some velvet morning is my favorite song of all time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
BronwynB:

but it's one of those
Avatar 9:52pm
glenn:

huh. i can't even decide on my ten favourite songs of all time. i applaud your decisiveness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
BronwynB:

haha i only have those two picked out and then my two favorite bands, i don't have any other favorites that are in order
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
BronwynB:

but it's so hard to choose because there's so much great stuff out there. but those two songs just really do something to me. in different ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
BronwynB:

i have a meandering personal story about this one too but it's too late to talk about it on air so you're all spared

Hi, Bronwyn. Couldn't listen live, so here I am with the archive. It was fun hearing E.G Daley doing her Pat Benetar impression and still sounding like Tommy. Digging the rest of the show too. All the best.
