Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Sheila!

@Rob JELLY! How did you manage that one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm rsj:

  3:04pm Leonardo:

@Leonardo, no!
  3:05pm Brendan:

Hi yall . Diggin this feel good pop in the home stretch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Rob Kopp:

@Threemoons: I already know him since 2001, when I did one of his songwriting courses. And we had him on our Dutch Kinks convention in 2009.
Avatar 3:05pm Brian Cat:

Rob That's amazing. He seems like a difficult guy to track down. I love the old Kinks from the 70s.
Avatar 3:05pm djsheilab:

Ooooh! So many of you here with me right on time! Hello!
  3:05pm Leonardo:

Been so long I forgot how to spell Sheila.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Threemoons:

@RobKoop wow! Very kewl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm eyenoise:

Hello @djsheilab!
Avatar 3:07pm Brian Cat:

This song is very cute, excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Rob Kopp:

@ Brian Cat: usually he is. He never turns up on the sing alongs (the evenings before the official konvention on Sunday), but this time he stayed for an hour on Friday evening!
Avatar 3:09pm Brian Cat:

Does the band perform at the konvention, or is that a fan gathering?
  3:10pm Cooh John:

Days of the week theme?
Avatar 3:10pm djsheilab:

On the sing alongs it's a band that consists of fans (this time 17!), on the conventions it's The Kast Off Kinks (with Mock Avory, John Dalton, Ian Gibbons) and this time ray sang along on You really got me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm melinda:

I love Bobbie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm pantz:

I look forward to this week's installment of Atmospheric Songs!

  3:13pm Leonardo:

This is a whirlpool of honey.
  3:14pm michael z:

Tuesday Child belongs in the atmospheric portion of the show. It’s so gorgeous. She’s an amazing artist.
  3:14pm Brendan:

Two of my favorite djs Joe and Sheila bookend the week and so many others in between and on the weekend. Wow. Gotta pinch myself every now and then since I found this station.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Rob Kopp:

Thanks for playing Nolan Strong & The Diablos - The wind last week, Sheila. Wow. 4 people with the same recommendation.
Avatar 3:16pm Joe McG:

Thanks for the shout-out, Brendan, and thank you, Sheila, for playing Bobbie Gentry just now, one of my all-time favorite singers ever. Her voice leapt out of the radio at me...in a good way!
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

Michael Z—she's truly in a league of her own!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm dale:

just pulled up a cup of tee and all set to snuggle in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm eyenoise:

@djsheilab: asking your take on a couple of artists: Caroline Polachek (ex-Chairlift) who kinda stole the show at the John Cale VU&Nico 50th Anniversary Concert; and Pip Blom, who did a terrific BBC6 session this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Michael 98145:

tea. check.
Avatar 3:17pm djsheilab:

Joe McG—You also voted for the Nolan Strong & the Diablos track, right? So that's five votes!
  3:17pm michael z:

Is David Bowie’s sublime Thursday’s Child next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Adrian in London:

I am a Wednesday's child. And I like Emiliana Torrini. So there you go…
Avatar 3:18pm Joe McG:

@sheilab: I sure did! One of my atmospheric musts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm listener james from westwood:

Torrini track would've been a good atmospheric option, too!
Avatar 3:20pm djsheilab:

Thursday is not a popular music day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Emiliana Torrini "Wednesday's Child"

Hi Sheila. Will tune in in a bit. Grand Funk R cd on, bec Clay Pigeon is here. Uh, former is true while latter is not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm northguineahills:

James beat me due to my extra due exclamation points.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm listener james from westwood:

This song always reminds me of a long-ago ex. Weirdly, more this version than the Cure's, even though that band helped bring us together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Rob Kopp:

They've done a lot of Kinks covers: Big sky, Fancy, This is where I belong, Oklahoma USA, No return and accompanied Ray Davies in New York in 2000
  3:24pm Brendan:

I knew we had to get to this track this day- yay
Avatar 3:25pm TehBadDr:

Hi Sheila and boomers! Wonderful Cure cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm doctorjazz:

SHEILA I love your days of the week theme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm pantz:

Taffy pull? What could that mean in 1960?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Threemoons:

@Pantz--an actual taffy pull.

Avatar 3:42pm The Contessa:

Lucky enough to have seen Dita at The Crazy Horse in Paris. She is utterly divine and SO professional!
Avatar 3:43pm Cecile:

The Crazy Horse! That's where Conchita Wurst played!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Michael 98145:

can't say i've ever heard her voice
Avatar 3:44pm The Contessa:

And… she can sing!
Avatar 3:44pm Cecile:

Reparata and the Delrons might be my favorite band name ever.
Avatar 3:44pm The Contessa:

@Cecile, that's where a lot of people have played!
Avatar 3:45pm Cecile:

I know, but I am a big hard rock doofus nerd and never knew anything about it until I became obsessed with Conchita last year.
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

It seems like a venue I might visit if I was ever in Paris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Rob Kopp:

@Dale. That version would surely fit as well. Just like Black Market by Frank Valdor Band: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Adrian in London:

@Cecile It's a *tiny* venue
Avatar 3:47pm The Contessa:

@Cecile, definitely! The classiest burlesque you'll ever see and such a history!
Avatar 3:47pm Cecile:

It looks like it from the photos I've seen.
Avatar 3:48pm Cecile:

I would like to see some wonderful burlesque. I have not been impressed with the stuff I've seen in Mpls. It hews too closely to the corny stuff from the 50s. Unless someone can illuminate me...
Avatar 3:49pm The Contessa:

@Cecile, the dancers are perfection! It's all done with lighting, so you never see what you think you see!
Avatar 3:49pm CTEmpress:

WHEW made it just in time to hear this lovely Minni Dark Horse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm listener james from westwood:

Uma's gonna go full Kill Bill on HW.

Avatar 3:52pm djsheilab:

Thank you Michael Z!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Adrian in London:

This Japanese song is great. Do you know which other Japanese song s great? YOUR THEME SONG!!! ;-)
Avatar 3:53pm Cecile:

I have to see it. I loved it that they put beards on all the dancers when Conchita played. Also, she/he says that it is an amazing work environment - they have a kitchen where they cook, gossip and "defend each other like lions". WHat. So I have her autobiography.
Avatar 3:53pm CTEmpress:

@MichaelZ I agree: double duty atmosphere and 1-2 punch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerkow...as a Scorpio whose ideal is a Sex Positive culture
- these ubiquitous Power Tripping violators of the Simple but Inviolable Rule Of Consent are not making it easier
...I mean - draw a list of how a Society - nay, a Civilization either Succeeds or Fails - & we are quite obviously getting an 'F' on this one...
  3:55pm mzm:

I can tell not-miss Meiko Kaji films: Female Convict Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973) & Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance (1974)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Michael 98145:

( great titles _ )
  3:56pm michael z:

The precursor to Material Girl. This is fab!!! I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Hose in a song. And what a great rhyme for clothes.
Avatar 3:57pm still b/p:

A few years ago was supposed to meet a friend for a local modern burlesque show --"research" for a possible erotic lit reading night later. She didn't make it, I went in alone...not many solo guys in there. Stage presence and talent varied, but the entire crowd was enthusiastically supportive, which was fun. I decided it would be great fun to design the theme/props/set pieces for such acts.
Avatar 3:58pm djsheilab:

Adrian in London—Haha! As Sandie Shaw sings..."Message Understood!" :)

[ from the internetwork : "In 1964, Hatch made his first trip to New York City in search of new material for Petula Clark. The visit inspired him to write "Downtown", originally with The Drifters in mind." ]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Guido from Cologne:

It was the flip of the debut, wasn't it?
Avatar 4:16pm The Contessa:

@Ken, glad you've arrived
Avatar 4:18pm Brian Cat:

Totally makes sense, I knew it took a lot of luck, but the missing components are talent and opportunity. I think that today the talent is not as necessary as it was in the past, due to the technology in pop. It doesn't matter how good a performer is, as long as they fit in with the marketing department's plan and maybe can generate some controversy and interest they are acceptable, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Michael 98145:

@Guido, it would appear so : www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Michael 98145:

@Brian C, talking politics again are we? :) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Truly Smith's appearance on Beat Club 1967 (German TV, radio Bremen):
Avatar 4:21pm Cecile:

I know Beat Club filmed a lot of their performer, unlike a lot of shows at the time. Is there any footage of Truly?
Avatar 4:21pm Brian Cat:

Not politics, music biz.
Avatar 4:21pm Cecile:

Get out of my head, Guido.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Passaic River Blues:

This really should be played in every bar on 7th Avenue from 14th Street to 34th Street.
Avatar 4:23pm Cecile:

She looks and sounds great, thanks Guido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Guido from Cologne:

There were three periods of Beat club
1. Full Live with audience in Club atmosphere
2. Mostly Playback with audience + promo films
3. Studio Stage playing live without audience
All were filmed, none were aired live.
Avatar 4:28pm Cecile:

I did not know that.
In the US they were either not taped, or were taped over if you weren't a huge star until the later 60s. Even in Australia, lots of great 70s Countdown performances are lost because they were taped over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Guido from Cologne:

Guess this on one of the DECCA-Mod-Collections. I know this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Michael 98145:

thanks again, Sheila. i'd never really heard of her before now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Guido from Cologne:

Erasure of shows happened in Germany too.
"Musik aus Studio B." is entirely lost except for the farewell show.
Avatar 4:30pm Cecile:

that stinks, but then again a lot of people didn't really care about keeping pop music history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Guido from Cologne:

Director Mike Leckebush was very self-confident.
He was font of producing all theese psychedelic effects.
He had an idea his productions were valuable.

As I learned from a documentary, all of the Monty Python shows would have been erased by the BBC, if not the Monthies themself had bought them back from the station. Hard to imagine. Post-War throw-away mentality. Pop and comedy is nothing of value.
  4:34pm Amy:

Great sound! Brilliant!
Avatar 4:34pm Cecile:

Exactly, Guido. There are popular TV series that ran for years that do not exist at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm dale:

Avatar 4:35pm The Contessa:

NO! Never reveal real names!!
  4:35pm Amy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm chris:

i really enjoy your interviews, Sheila. thank you for bringing them.
Avatar 4:38pm Cecile:

thanks, Guido!

This is US Girls? It's been a long time since I listened to them. Last time, I think they were really lo-fi and drenched in static.
Avatar 4:38pm still b/p:

Relevant only to talk of TV performance modes and archives: saw Manilow in a Carson show performance from '85 the other night. A run-of-the-mill 80's flavor song with Barry lip-synching, standing and strutting/posing with the mike, no piano, and a good portion of the audience going bah-NANAS at the mention of his name, at his introduction, at his performance. All sorta odd. Have a look if you like. Check the jacket and paaaants!
  4:38pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

Good morning/evening everyone!
Avatar 4:39pm djsheilab:

Cecile—Yup, brand new single.
Avatar 4:39pm djsheilab:

Morning EarlyMorningInSeoul!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Guido from Cologne:

It#s not music performance alone.
There are documentary sections as well.
Quite some time-capsules.
Too bad, the playback-period was in the most intersting tim 1967-69.
Even though ... i learne Small Faces were pretty much untight in their "Nutgone"-period due lack of touring and drugs. So who knows.
Avatar 4:42pm Cecile:

sbp, the song made me laugh. Barry will always be looking for the girl that's right for him.... But very typical 80s talk show pre-Arsenio Hall.
  4:43pm dooly:

OMG I understand the lyrics! Wow! Armenian coming in handy, finally!
Avatar 4:45pm djsheilab:

Lo-fi soul!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Carmichael:

@Cecile, maybe in song but not in real life, I understand. Not that there's anything wrong with that ....
Avatar 4:46pm Brian Cat:

The strings are walking all over the vocal.

Love Gillian Welch. And U.S. Girls: that was nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm northguineahills:

Gillian Welch is either amazing or meh, this falls under the former. Loverly!
Avatar 4:49pm Cecile:

Carm, the reason he kept looking is that girl never existed!
Avatar 4:49pm βrian:

There are something like 8 Bowling Greens in the U.S. How to keep them straight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm northguineahills:

@βrian: Did you include Bowling Green, Manhattan (southern tip, near Battery Park)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm pantz:

Bowling Green, KY can be remembered as that armpit of America you pass just before you enter Nashville on I-65 South.

There are said to be other beings in Orion's star-belt.
Avatar 4:55pm still b/p:

When I saw that,I did NOT remember that screaming fans were part of the Barry experience....and even into the mid 80s?

There are some A+ archival pieces. Watched a late 50s Steve Allen excerpt recently...him and a young Steve & Eydie and Dinah Shore and Ann Sothern and a quickie Frank cameo, all doing the Allen-written This Could Be The Start of Something Big while on a LONG-ass singing march around backstage halls and studio spaces at NBC. I am GLAD and grateful such a clip wasn't lost. And wondered if it was live when it aired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Speaking of atmosphere: Besides the lovely near-full moon rising in the east, at precisely 5:37 PM, the space station will be passing over JC. Should make for quite a sophisticated sky scene. spotthestation.nasa.gov...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm northguineahills:

I would have contributed, but I don't want my aesthetic biases to influence what others hear....unless I'm the one playing the material of course (i suppose I'm a bit off).

The Dramatics. Awesome!
Avatar 5:18pm The Contessa:

Glenn J, thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Guido from Cologne:

There were quite a few comps and re-issues of Gallo soundtracks on CD in the 1990ies. I simply grab it when i see it for a few Euros. (Berlin label Cripped Dick Hot Wax had some great comps of the genre.)

Sheila B: Your show has quickly become one of my favorites on WFMU. You're GREAT! Your music is GREAT! Music from the days of Yore. (Did you see what I did there?)
  5:34pm Fnarf:

Oh man, how great are all these "Saint Etienne Present" CDs? I don't have this one but all of them, the early ones on Ace and the newer ones on Croydon Municipal, 100% great. Bob Stanley is my song selection idol (after Miz Burgel, of course).

Avatar 5:38pm still b/p:

Watched the Les Paul documentary a few weeks ago, after the Weinstein news and the stirred wave were much in the public spotlight. At the credits, there's a moment when the aged Les Paul joshes suggestively onstage at the Iridium about getting together with the young female bass player. She smiles but looks embarassed. The moment now feels...not so playful or good.
Avatar 5:39pm Brian Cat:

Yes, good one, The O'Jays had really good songs.
