@ngh: in the course of sourcing botanicals for a craft distillery I do some work for, I found a Japanese bitter orange tree living at a local nursery. Native to Northern Japan and Korea, it is the root stock for most Florida orange trees because of it's tolerance to low temperature.

@Sem: my whisky society has a single malt in from Goa, India. Very pricey but I'll have to try a dram. In the cupboard for the festiveries is a stonking Pedro Ximenez sherry, some bourbon barrel aged beers and some Polish cherry brandy-thing.

Do you guys no anything about balut? Back in the old days my buddy Ben would threaten to trade me a couple balut eggs for one of my Moms Peanut Butter n Jelly sammiches. Apparently it's an egg with a developed chicken in it- best eaten at about 16 days of gestation... anybody hungry?

@Sem: no, it's too expensive for me these days. I did get a nice Port Askaig lately, but that's not a discovery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Sem:

Ah, bourbon-barrel aged! Man, Jack Daniels has some of its barrels in every small distillery, winery, brewery and cidery in North America...I shudder to think how much Jack goes down American gullets every year.

Bill: Bryce put me onto that. Ummmm, no thanks.
Avatar 12:51pm
northguineahills:

@Sem: wow, cool! I'm about 75 km north of where commercial orange groves start, but you see a few yards here and there that have citrus trees.

@Stanley: Gainesville is equidistant from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic (about 95 km from either) and a womping 60m above sea level, so, it usually gets below freezing 5-7 times per year, but usually not until January. What's unusualy is that it's 12C in the afternoon and it usually gets back up to at least 18C when it gets cold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
coelacanth∅:

Sem, i've always been thankful that some people have such shitty taste in whiskey (or, rather, are easily sucked into thinking a particular product is cool because of the marketing) because of the good things that can be done with jack daniels barrels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Brian in UK:

Here is a naughty site.
www.masterofmalt.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Sem:

True that, coel. The rum produced at the little place I'm associated with is something of a sensation here, where one bottle of three spirits sold is rum of one kind or another. The product is aged for a year in JD barrels, and it is a magic transformation.

@Sem: I once had a whisky aged in a rum barrel (one of Ichiro's card series) and wasn't convinced it was a good idea. The rum side was too strong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Brian in UK:

Was it The Beat?
  1:07pm
melinda:

Brian I think so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Stanley:

@fred: I'd agree on the rum. However, there's some good experimentation happening up here with exotic barrels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i'd try that rum from jd barrels - even though i pretty much swore off rum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Stanley:

Bill breaks out the rum music, right on cue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
fred:

@Stanley: I'm all for experimentation, so I embrace failure. To me, if you never fail, you're not really experimenting. I can how aging rum in JD barrels could work better as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Sem:

Gotta step out for a bit, have to look into balut-inspired haggis aged in rum barrels which formerly held Goa malt whisky. Back in a trice.

melinda there's i think 4 places in this village that have kombucha. it's the good marketing of one particular woman.
strangely the expensive tiny "wine bar" has "calmbucha" (the trade name) for $4./pretty good-sized beakerful, served with dignity; while the dive bar has it $4./ a small glass.

Bit of a wistful elegiac feel to this set, Bill. Contemplative, even. We lose connections to people who find places in our hearts, it's feels bad to have to let them go.
See you Christmas morning, and I am hoping all ^ above, too. Shiny side up going home. Later, all.

Brian in UK:

Bill, sad to hear of your friends' demise. Some times we lose track of people then they come back into our lives and the friendship is stronger because we kind of pick up the pieces and do not have to start over again. The old jokes and such are all there to be enjoyed afresh. It does remind us of our mortality more than someone of another generation.
The Philipinos I have worked with have been lovely people, caring and thoughtful. Onward we go. X
