I know kim gordon was a karen carpenter fan, and besides the cover they did, SY also dedicated a song to her.

I've always been partial to the Thinking Fellers Union cover of Superstar over the Sonic Youth version. But i'm a sucker for those fellers.

I have not yet heard that cover-of-a-cover-of-a-cover-of-a-cover, cklequ

I saw the SY version on 120 minutes and immediately bought the tribute album (i was in HS), it eventually led me to the Carpenters original music. I love the Thinking Fellers Union, but have yet to hear their cover.

The Carps' "Superstar" was itself a cover, natch. Famously, their changing the lyric "sleep with you" to "be with you" broke a logjam among music industry types, who loved the song but felt it could never be a hit if it spelled out that the girl actually fucked the guy. Apparently, this simple and obvious change never occurred to any of them

The Osborn Top 40
With a recording career that spanned three decades, one can assume there might be a few hit songs along the way. In Joe Osborn’s case, the number is around 200. This list contains songs that appeared on the pop charts. According to Joe, it’s a little incomplete due to the fact that he can’t remember every session. In his days in Nashville, Osborn played on53 certifiable number one songs on the country charts.

For better or worse...A memory-image forever stuck/associated with Carpenters since 71-72: a large felt banner created by students at my Catholic school and hung in the auditorium foyer, depicting a simple turntable circle and tonearm, and the words, "We've only just begun."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Gary:

I want to see that banner now

Sigh, No, turns out faulty memory on my part. The comp I'm thinking of was "Strength Through Oi". (I misspelled it "Oy" to boot.) "If Oi Were a Carpenter" was the title of Lester Bangs's last piece.

But dammit, it *should* have been a real comp!

Perry and Karen together, singing bits of each other's songs. I think Perry's reading lyrics off cue cards. Don't watch right now, of course, but enjoy with family over the holidays.

I despise plenty and I love plenty of artists' music/ things in general, but 100% of the time anyone's said "you either love it or hate it", I've either loved it, or, most of the time, didn't hate it but didn't love it.
the carpenters I can only take in tiny doses; but the covers can be pretty stellar.

Funky16corners:

I love a lot of their songs, but I will always stop to listen to Karen’s voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Gary:

The stripped-down versions have given me a great new appreciation of her voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah I liked that, something you played before - I was away from the computer but I heard what sounded like a demo.
- that's the case with many of Paul's Beatles songs. the demos or early takes, without the slippery sugar smothering them, are much preferred.

I love this song. Theme to a weird but cool movie
