Very much enjoying this Keely Smith tribute! One of my favorite Louis Prima comps is that "Capitol Collector's Series" that was complied by WFMU's own Dennis Diken!
pantz, i think you see it as being dark because you've clicked on your profile (so it becomes like a purple link). i just clicked on yours and then went back and your heart became dark for me too,
Saw the Smithereens back at the Dirt Club in Bloomfield in early '82. They were so new on the scene that they were actually opening for a cornball Beatles tribute band that night. Met DiNizio briefly -- sure seemed like a nice guy. So said to hear about his loss.
ha ha nothing sounds less tough than that dude saying targa - rock out!

I used to work a split shift, so I would go out on Wed. night. Heartbreak- 7th Ave. So. Live music on Wed. I saw that Darlene Love was gonna be there. I’m standing across the street waiting for the light to change, when these guys with instruments come up behind me, we talk for a minute, yeah we are backing up Darlene 2night. Guy with a bass drum that said “The Smithereens. Must have been around ‘83?
A month or so later, Ronnie Spector @ Heartbreak
on a Wed. night. GUESS WHO THE BACKUP BAND WAS? Wacky.
Nice story, Doc! Glad you folks enjoyed those sounds. Condolences to Pat DiNizio's family, friends, and bandmates.

Dennis Diken:
Thanks Joe for the lovely tribute to Pat and everyone for their comments, much appreciated. @Frank, we recorded at a lot of different studios thu the years. Record Plant was our NY home base. We also cut at Capitol Tower, A&M (both in Hollywood), Magic Shop in NYC, Fidelitorium in NC, etc.
and i'm sorry i missed the Pat tribute (i caught michael shelley's); how did i NOT ever see the Smithereens before? r.i.p.
10:43am
Brendan:
@Joe no guilt in the pleasure of the Smithereens tribute. Took me back to a time and place and feelings that they evoke. Sorry to hear of the losses today, and appreciative of the things we do have, including this station and your show.
@Mayuko: I love these lines: "What do we care if the world is a joke? Let's give it a big kiss, let's give it a poke. Death wears a big hat 'cause he's a big bloke; we're only living this instant."

.... ive always wondered, what song was this a sort of homage to... that template and swing... that song about making a phone call to memphis or something... or even earlier...
One of the girls in my house in college drank Tang. She also put butter on Saltines.
11:11am
rw:
Hello! He also mentioned Space Food Sticks. I remember what those tasted like but I can't remember what Tang tastes like. Some kind of orange flavor. Butter on Saltines! My mom would do that!
@herb: Cool! @Mayuko: Totally! @myron: Glad I didn't make that up! @duke: I won't, but it's good to know! @queems: ha ha! @sugarpfwolf: I used to do both of those things! @rw: I never had a Space Food Stick.
i should relisten to Excitable Boy, bec i was dumb and didn't get into it then. (ditto to Randy Newman stuff; wnyc played his "lets drop the big one now" and it was so funny)
Joe! I haven't heard this Pogues song, or the Zevon one, in many many years, and am shocked that I remember all the words to both. And meanwhile I struggle to remember my own phone number...
11:27am
melinda:
June Tabor does a really haunting version of this.
This is absolutely stunning, Joe...thank you for such a stunning show and a set that even tops your many achievements. And happy holidays from your pal Alex ;-)
You bet, Frenchee! Thanks, Matt, I think I will do it now and then. There could be a whole Brit ballad edition! Country ballads, too. @Brendan: I hope it wasn't a wig, but I guess it was.
11:45am
frenchee:
Lots of MAMAs today and dead or maimed soldiers. NICE!
@JoeMac: hmm, someone mentioned 'creepy'. if you like horror at all, you should check out some of algernon blackwood's stuff. lovecraft worshipped him! Plus, it's all public domain on gutenberg
Joe, think you hit spot AGAIN. Great show.
Next show. Next year.
11:53am
Brendan:
I can vaguely remember you playing a cool tragic ballad about a penniless young man doing a hold up or shoplifting or something to get his girl an engagement ring ?. I thing there mighta been a hanging or electric chair involved. My brain is repressing it - go figure .
Thanks for listening, everyone, and commenting. Have a great rest of your year! I won't be here next week, but Bill Mac will play wonderful songs for you. I WILL be here on New Year's Day. Hope some of you will join me in 2018!
Thanks, Joe. I plan to stick around for Joe Belock and his presentation of The Love-Birds plus a videocast of Chris Forsyth and the Solar Motel Band coming up next!
fantastic show, Joe -- especially that last set -- STORY TIME! totally killer, thank you!
(was listening but working, not able to chime in earlier)
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! see you in the New Year! :)
