I served Arlo six cups of coffee while he chain-smoked and his companions drank like fish. 1984 or thereabouts.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd like to hear his opinion of the rappers you see on the TV machines. What kind of story are they telling when they're waving around big wads of cash in Bentleys in front of mansions and they're making millions doing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
melinda:

@Kim yes! This is a big deal. Also, he's such a great interviewee.
  7:35pm
Emily:

He was SUCH a great interviewee.
Avatar 7:36pm
kimzilla:

Ken, yeah, I wonder what he thinks. But I'd also hope that he's also come across some of the hip hop artists that also tell these complex stories also, sometimes off the cuff. There is some incredible story telling in rap, if its done right.
Avatar 7:37pm
βrian:

@Kate: I know that's right, I know that's right, I know that's right, I know that's right ...

But really, I do.
  7:37pm
Kate:

holy cow no wonder I love him so much, he is willing to be vulnerable and he's asking us to do that with each other
Avatar 7:38pm
Linda Lee:

anyone familiar with folk music generally can 'get' hip hop in context. boasting isn't relegated to that genre either!
Avatar 7:38pm
βrian:

Martha wasn't a fan of artists' statements? What??
  7:38pm
Emily:

@Ken from HP: we talked about that a little bit, actually—he said he looks at them as really talented performers/entertainers sometimes, but that MOST of the pop music out there now just isn’t storytelling—it isn’t the same thing to him (we didn’t actually address rap directly, just “top 40” stuff).
Avatar 7:39pm
kimzilla:

"first time, last time" straight to the heart...
Avatar 7:40pm

hip hop is unique to popular music tho .. hard to lump it in with top 40 ..

Martha G had a point, but that's sort of an unfair way to make it. The students were responding to a request, their descriptions were not necessarily valuable or accurate representations of what they planned to do, not nice to call them idiots.
  7:41pm
Hypertoast:

I think rap from the 80's had much more in common with country and folk music than it does with most hip hop of today. It was mostly story telling then

@melinda: Yes, I agree. And I've seen that, where teachers didn't own up to what they were asking.
Avatar 7:45pm
Linda Lee:

Hypertoast, hip hop still seems pretty clearly grounded in storytelling now ~ but it's evolved stylistically, in terms of narrative style.
Avatar 7:46pm
Linda Lee:

odd to think Arlo's reached an age & a station in life that wasn't allowed his father. i wonder if he reflects on that any.

It's something to think of how until the modern age, oral stories would get passed down as such and many things forgotten. Today, so much stuff is saved (tweets, emails, digital photos, etc.). We kind of expect things to be preserved forever.
