a very somber show so far!

The first half of today's playlist is adapted from an older show from the second year of the series. But, when I went to rebroadcast I found the audio needed a lot of help and I remade it for today with better discs and a new second half.

Year of the Dog, and "I Love My Dog" is a fitting theme song.

I will never forget the first time I heard this song. Bill Inglot played it for me and it should be part of a compilation of songs by British people complaining about work. Oh, Bill!

Did you do a Cat show years ago? Might have been where I first heard these. Didn't know he had a "pre-A & M" phase at that point.
  7:07pm
Babinga:

I have a nice white label promo of this lp
Avatar 7:08pm

This is a redone version of that early show, Izzy.

Hey Grandma!
  7:20pm
izzy:

Is there more that what's on those first two albums?
Avatar 7:22pm
KarenS:

I used to trade 45's as a teenager and somehow ended up with a demo of Kitty.
Avatar 7:22pm
cometothesunshine:

yes - several singles and two unissued songs, which I play in this show!
  7:22pm
izzy:

Funny--I was looking up those two albums and allmusic.com terms this as "dated juvenilia". Their loss......
Avatar 7:23pm
KarenS:

I mean promo not demo!
Avatar 7:23pm
cometothesunshine:

Haha! Cat has actually returned to performing this song, Blackness Of The Night, in his live shows.
  7:24pm
izzy:

!!!
Avatar 7:24pm
cometothesunshine:

Karen, in the UK, they call promos, demos!
Avatar 7:25pm
cometothesunshine:

I am so impressed by these live versions - the UK radio orchestras did a great job with the complex arrangements.
Avatar 7:25pm
KarenS:

Ah! I need to see if I still have it!
Avatar 7:26pm
cometothesunshine:

I specifically picked some of these radio sessions because Cat's vocals are double-tracked in places
Avatar 7:26pm

I think a guy named Cat singing Kitty just intrigued me haha.

Your shows are generally amazing, this one I have listened to three times. Cat Stevens is quite a revelation. He was really great! Thank you so much for all you do.

Great set - wonder if there's a demo for Cat's "People People". Acetate maybe? My fave he never put out himself. The fact that song languishes in obscurity is a crime!

Brian in UK:

Andrew, catching up on archives. I bought Matthew & Son album on release with my first paper round money. Good songs are timeless. Mike Hurst was in the Springfields with Dusty and brother Tom but I guess you know that already.
Smart move on Kim Fowley's part to get co-writing credits on Portobello Road.
