Hey all. Schedule a bit off lately due to a project being cancelled; using downtime to catch up on doc appointments and such. Happy Thursday!

Damn, he was a youngster.

On a happier note, my wife was recently a ticket taker for Penelope Houston, who curated a punk film series at SF Public Library from mid-December through last night. Penelope was there, of course, and she was wearing a WFMU t-shirt. My wife told her, "My husband has a bunch of those!"

Martin Bisi - photographer of the infamous Gowanus Canal Swimmer!

Jesus Martin I just looked at your "resume" and holy cow have you had your hands in so many albums I love. Thank you!!

Check out White Hill's "Stop Mute Defeat" for an excellent example of Martin's recent work.

fill that canal in! why spend hundreds of millions of dollars just to sell condos when the canal will never flush itself and always require maintenance and massive amounts of power?
check our the Ferrara brother's concrete mountain their building next to the gowanus on a superfund site! they've elevated the land like 20 with concrete over the last few years
Avatar 1:30pm
Chris from DC:

Last time I saw Martin play was Spectrum when it was still in Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
coe:

CopShootCop is one of my favorite bands of all time, but I have neve seen them live so my entire sound experience with them is based on what Martin worked on. So as I have listened to much of those albums and had my mind blown by the sound I would say that at least in that case he has accomplished his mission

great interview. thanks!

super interview
  1:36pm
Dean:

Amoeba Records is having an online sale (use JAN15 for 15% discount), so I plugged in Martin Bisi: 74 results, some duplicates, but wow. Derek Bailey, Ramones, Peter Brotzmann, Herbie Hancock...

@coe - I saw Cop Shoot Cop in the late 80s or early 90s in Austin and it was truly a great show
  1:49pm
Chapelhillian:

I concur on Cop Shoot Cop live, extraordinary experience at the much missed Brewery in Raleigh. Firewater (Tod A's band) is also great, political but not as powerful/noisy
  1:51pm
Dean:

Ginger Baker & Paul Gurvitz produced Baker Gurvitz Army's second album. Not sure who engineered, but the sound of Baker's drums on that first track is amazing.

Same thing I was thinking re: Albini and his drum sound. I really like what Martin is saying about where to put them in the mix depending on song.

Great interview so far!!! does he remember RAT AT RAT R ?
Avatar 2:01pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

There was a fine space-rock band in MD called "Elegent Mess" (misspelled deliberately) so for what it's worth, that name is already on the books...
  2:05pm
Stevel:

As he spoke about early on, it must be a delicate process to bring the chaos clearly to the recording. Reminds me of the difference between Nirvana's Bleach and Butch Vig's take on their sound on Nevermind.
  2:07pm
Stevel:

Seems that the best producers are combination empath, explorer and techno-nerd.
