You should be playing Bernhard Gunter and Morton Feldman w/ these volume levels, oh wait, it went up....

i'm listening on a laptop now and it is not possible to turn it up enough to enjoy it. (both the computer and the player are up all the way)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm

i've spent many years being repulsed by the beach boys. 1-2 years ago Explorers room did a beach boys program and i enjoyed it. all little known, not commercial stuff.
then something<2 weeks ago led me to read something about Brian and i decided to listen to the entire beach boys catalog in chronological order, doing my best (which can be pretty good) to imagine what it was like the first time, at the time...which i started to do a week ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
coelacanth∅:

i know it's not a popular opinion. i actually have turned off wfmu many times because of the beach boys.
...i've gotten up to pet sounds and i know the best is yet to come, but i have a new, open appreciation for them; and i've had some surprising revelations.

Just realizing, like, >35 years after the show aired, that this Eagles tune was used as the in-theme for the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" TV show. Have not heard it since the early Reagan era. Wow; thanks for closing this mental loop!
Avatar 8:29pm
northguineahills:

@coel: sometime when I was around 23, i had a BB revelation, and Pet Sounds made sense, and the next few albums. I found some polaroids of them in 20/20 I found in a thrift store. My wife framed them and put them on the wall. Her friends would ask me if those were my family. Now the BB are gospel to me.
Avatar 8:31pm
northguineahills:

(my wife is of a darker hue then me, so, the BBs looked more like me)
  8:31pm
SeanG:

deep cut
Avatar 8:32pm
BronwynB:

@coel: That's actually a really similar trajectory to mine. Until about three and a half years ago I only knew them for Surfin USA, Barbara Ann, etc and I thought they were ungodly lame and had no interest in them whatsoever. Then in late 2014 I was doing a project for college where I had written a script about a radio drama recording gone horribly wrong and it was supposed to be a found recording of the producer berating the writer and actors and them all having a huge fight. Doing research I came across the Help Me Rhonda tape with Murry abusing the boys and was fascinated and then decided, what the hell, I'll listen to a BBs tune, and I ended up picking the aforementioned Sloop John B vocals only mix and I was floored. I then did what you're doing and listened to it all in chronological order and they became my favorite band and they still are, to the point that I've seen BW live four times and literally wrote a screenplay about them
Avatar 8:33pm
BronwynB:

you can tell i really care about the BBs because i write wall of texts about them. and 150-page screenplays!
Avatar 8:34pm
BronwynB:

@james: that's where I heard it for the first time! I was obsessed with Hitchhiker's as a kid and I loved the tv series and always thought that tune (particularly the arrangement they used in the series) was such a great theme for it. i was really glad it made it into the movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

There's a compilation called 'Endless Bummer' which acts as a good cure for Beach Boys enthusiasm. Anti-drugs radio jingles, Mike Love studio whining about the 'Surf's Up lyrics, all kinds of crap!
Avatar 8:37pm

@foofs: i love endless bummer. it combines my two favorite things: the beach boys and utter shit
Avatar 8:38pm

Yeah, same here, Bronwyn, I thought they were just 60s bubble gum, but a friend turned me on to Sunflower, Pet Sounds and Smile, and I was in love w/ them ever since, and even dig their teeny bop crap as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
coelacanth∅:

well- i always thought i detested mike love's voice, mainly; and i still do! and i don't like him, from what i've read about him (but who knows) but i've also greatly disliked Brian's voice, and now realise how dramatically his singing improved over the first few years. that's one revelation. i really like his singing starting with "today!".

Avatar 8:45pm
BronwynB:

@coel: mike is the worst. he's the least talented one, a huge jerk, and just overall awful and a big part of the reason the BBs are often regarded as lame and not the innovators and geniuses they really were (IMO)

I won't trace my BB path...but let's see where this lands: I've never cared for Olivia Newton John's voice and work. Always feels weak and uninteresting. A soft or easy or light voice can be fine, but hers...nuh-uh. Obviously many fans, and people who've disagreed with me, hear something I don't.
Avatar 8:57pm

thanks james :))) if im being totally honest part of the reason i want this particular job is because the most convenient way for me to get to FMU from there would be by ferry and i just really want to sail to fmu with the wind in my buzz cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
coelacanth∅:

Sean, as a child i was infatuated with George, then as a rebelious teen my friends and i put John on a pedestal; and maybe he should be, but in the end i still like George the best, and despite his religion, can relate to him the most.

Sean that album is a work of art; one of the first albums i ever bought, as a child ($5.00 new from the record club of america) but i wish there were a stripped-down ("naked") version of it. i'm not into spector's wall of mess production on some of those tracks.

College music moment: I was playing a cassette of Eno's Discreet Music in a studio painting class and a much older woman -- non-traditional student -- says, "Do you think anyone is really enjoying that?" She then said it was like a funeral dirge. I did shut it off with an over-dramatic harrumph about how we could all listen to Top 40 instead and have a great time.

Not to put too fine upon it, the Blues Brothers were all about taking obscure R&B and blues hits and introducing them to white college kids who assumed they were original. Their "Rubber Biscuit" was a huge hit on my college campus, where no one (including me, I'm constrained to admit) had ever heard of the Chips' original.
Avatar 9:45pm
BronwynB:

Yeah, on the one hand I really appreciate them shining a light on some little-known old songs, but on the other hand I wish they'd given more credit to the original artists (like Abner). The movie has always struck me as such a joyful celebration of that music though.
Avatar 9:48pm
still b/p:

Between the familiar numbers from earlier days such as Soul Man and the retro character flavor and the presence in the movie of some artists as tribute/nod, I thought it was pretty clear at the time the Brothers were serving covers, even if I didn't know all the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
Parq:

Honestly, if they had been left purely to their own devices, they might have given the originals more props. But that's just the way the music industry was, and is. For that matter, it's just the way white college kids were, and are. Digging the show BB, gotta get back to the kitchen.

Blues Brothers were a gateway, just like the Chesterfield Kings and the Lyres were to the garage punk era.
