Klezmer fiddle luminary Alicia Svigals with pianist Ulli Geissendoerfer

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Alicia Svigals, co-founder of the Klezmatics, is one of the best klezmer fiddlers in the world. Alicia has had a lively and varied post-Klezmatics career - but her new album, Beregovski Suite (just released on keyboardist Ulli Geissendoerfer’s Vegas Records label) is her first in two decades. On the album, Alicia and Uli re-imagine some of the 2,000 songs ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski recorded (on cylinders) and transcribed, collecting them in Ukrainian-Jewish shtetls between 1929 and 1947. Geissendoerfer’s archives are a unique treasure trove of East European Jewish music documentation - there’s nothing else like it.

Alicia and Uli have a big record release show Sunday night (February 4th) at 7 at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette St in lower Manhattan - and they stop by to chat and perform a few pieces from the album tonight on WFMU.

Big thanks to our illustrious engineer Mark Koch!

About the artists: Alternative Chicano band Las Cafeteras recreate traditional Afro-Caribbean Son Jarocho music in a wildy vibrant style. Their rousing socially conscious messages, in English and Spanglish, tell stories of a community that is looking for love and fighting for justice in the concrete jungle of East LA. • The infectious indie mambo band Orkesta Mendoza mix a multitude of Latin styles like cumbia, merengue and ranchera through a psychedelic mambo and post-punk prism. Bandleader, keyboardist, guitarist and vocalist Sergio Mendoza (who has long collaborated with Calexico and Devotchka) leads a powerhouse band fronted by the rich baritone of vocalist and dancer Salvador Duran.

This is so great! Sorry to sound like an “old guy” lecturing, but you know all that B.S. that is happening in the Ukraine nowadays? You can trace a direct line from the Stalinist purges/pogroms of the past—and even earlier—to the stuff happening now.

The Ukrainian Jewish culture is pretty much the solid Soviet Jewish culture the schmucks over there wanted to oppress.
7:38pm el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

I would suggest that this anapolitical forum for music. That, other constructs and respect are what will bridge us and our deep passions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Rob W:

I do like to let the music do the talking, as noted philosopher Joe Perry once said...
  7:44pm JakeGould:

“I would suggest that this an apolitical forum…” Music and art is inherently political. I do not plan to fan any flames of anything here. Rob is indeed letting the art speak for itself.

But—you know—if someone is going to play music that is rare to hear from an era when artists were murdered ignoring the politics is childish and silly.

This a great show.
