Mary Wing is seeking suggestions of songs in which the lyrics include the spelling of a word, e.g., G-L-O-R-I-A. It occurred to me that Robert Ashley's lyrics must include an instance or two of this phenomenon, but I can't think of one.

It *is* creepy but at least it focuses more on the woman's perception of the act rather than the man's POV...? Though the woman seems impassive and blanked-out like a pr0n lady, so I don't like that. Very confusing....
Avatar 3:57pm
βrian:

Yes, it's that almost out-of-body recollection that gives it such an unsettling tinge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm

Ashley wrote the words for that piece, so it's a man imagining rape from a woman's perspective. I've been hearing that piece for decades and it always gets a huge reaction from people.

Avatar 4:05pm
pcnyc:

Impassively conveyed, like she's recounting to her therapist or something, and we're eavesdropping on a highly-sensitive and personal dialogue of confidences.
For what purpose?
And how can there be a bodily violation of another person accurately conveyed without emotion?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
dale:

don't over analyze it - it's a piece of theater.
  4:09pm
Dean:

My memory could be playing games, but Ashley's conceit reminds me of some of Peter Handke's work, its clinical accounts of crises and deep anxiety. Handke famously wrote a play, "Offending the Audience," aimed at doing just that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Devin B.:

Purposeful Lady grew out of a larger piece called "That Morning Thing," inspired by three friends of Ashley's, three women who didn't know each other and who each committed suicide. He says it "was an attempt to come to grips with that, to get rid of it, so you don't have to keep thinking about it all the time. It becomes something outside of you, a shield between you and whatever you think about it."

@pcnyc: Totally agree w/r/t the fallacy of removing emotion from such a charged scenario. It creeps me the hell out too. For what it's worth, Ashley also says that vision for the piece was a failure. Hope it didn't feel like I was arguing with you. It's not often I'm able to contribute relevant knowledge on these boards - particularly on this show!
  4:50pm
Mark Williams:

@Devin B - it's interesting what you say Ashley said about it. Because a critique that I linked to earlier (scroll up) suggested that the Liddell's delivery (vocalist) started to stray into "performance," and whether or not he asked this of her or not is one of the things I'm not clear on. But in doing so, it went into very difficult and arguably shock-value territory. And these days, we're just not in need of that anymore (if we ever were).

[Well, actually,] Being aware and sensitive of how others sense and interpret events is what many human enterprises are about: education, anti-discrimination struggles, literature and other arts... Not being on Twitter, I don't know how the #metoo discussion is progressing, though I read bits and pieces in the news, usually related to the (to my mind not surprising, but still shocking) stories of abuses by (relatively) powerful men of women with whom they work. If that's so, then #metoo is also about abuses of power, male entitlement, and patriarchy, pace Andrea Dworkin. Dworkin confronted the problems she saw head-on. Her book Pornography meticulously, graphically, and painfully analyzes common tropes of hatred and intimidation in porn. Like many of her works, it is unsettling. How would Dworkin have heard the Ashley piece? I don't know.

The film? "In The Intense Now." Okay I suppose. Just for the record, I am pro-feminist.

I am satisfied in having raised my concern of "art" that reconstructs violent and tragic scenarios.
Proceed at your own level of understanding and interest. Happy to dialogue more with those individuals who have a genuine interest. There is no "silly" "bickering", Fabio.
I've art to go see. Peace out.

Good show Fabio. Diggin a lot of this stuff. Especially current drone. I thought that Ashley piece was intense and it made me wonder what the process of making it was. As someone who has been raped I did not assume however that it was necessarily intentionally harmful or sexist just because the piece came from a man and involved explicit violent content. We don't know how or why people make art and just because it is hard to stomach doesn't mean intentions are neccisarily bad or that they are intending to use violence in a salacious way. I really wonder though and will have to research the making of that one...

i'm one of those who believes in freedom of expression and in the US, the first amendment applies. i'm thoroughly disgusted with recent decisions with institutions in Berkeley, for instance, to stifle expression and therefore stifle open dialogue, which is also under increasing attack. we might say there's a dark side to "politicial correctness" if it stifles dialogue. art is a very useful tool, in my opinion, for fostering dialogue. yes, someone who is picking on someone or stereotyping someone or being bigoted is an asshole. should we not be able to dialogue with them? at the very least, can we not use that opportunity to understand why they think what they think? it may help reach common ground, though not always easy.

no one was being sexist on the board that i could see TDK. however my opinion as to what art might encompass got me told to go fuck myself - rude, insulting and disparaging. she inserted the gender bias into the conversation.

exactly what chris said.
- and,"political correctness" is not always correct and reduced freedom to "protect" others from feeling or dealing with the harshness that is the reality of this world is just another step toward total control by a government that will be oppressive and otherwise malevolent far beyond most people's imaginations.

@ Philthy woman: Thanks for your thoughtful and measured comment on this. It's my understanding that Ashley interview a number of women for their views on sexual encounters of varying degrees. He wanted to present the woman's point of view in a way that was't emotionally weighted. It is a tough piece amnd I have aired it many times, but I also think it is quite beautiful and powerful and gives the woman a voice that she might not have had otherwise. I don't normally "defend" anything I play on the air but your comment I thought warranted my input. Someone else pointed out that Ashley himself thought this was not a successful piece. I'm am uncertain as to where this comes from but I will have to do some digging myself on that... thanks again...

@coel: with all due respect (for real- i always enjoy your contributions) i think political correctness at this point in time is not a step towards control by a malevolent government, at least in the us, because the malevolent government currently in power is actually headed by people who like to bray about their opposition to political correctness. so a PC-related government takeover is probably the least of our worries right now

I like the Ashley. I understand how it might shock, even repulse, others. I don't understand how "willing suspension of disbelief" works for horror movies or Wagner, but not for Ashley, when it comes to "reconstruct[ion of] violent and tragic scenarios." But I can empathize with anybody who finds something so "creepy" that it crosses a line for them. I do not agree that by virtue of crossing that line, art becomes "art" in scare quotes.

Great show as always, Fabio. I think you were referring to my comment earlier that Ashley thought he had been unsuccessful at capturing the scene absent of emotion. I’m taking this from a quick re-read of what Kyle Gann’s book says on the origin of the piece. Your recollection of Ashley’s method and purpose is pretty much the same as what Gann says.

This remark of yours, @dale, is what provoked my ire: "don't over analyze it - it's a piece of theater."
I am entitled to stand in my own truth..and you've no business discounting how i respond to a description of sexual violence.
I would have messaged you directly about this, but didn't want to hear you have an issue with that, either, somewhere down the line.
This piece is offensive and needs to be rethought as being fully acceptable for broadcast, in the same way other exploitative work is. These are changing times and I, for one, will -- in no uncertain terms -- speak out against such insensitivity.
