"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

At show start, I was slightly panicking that:

- I had somehow ended up in a parallel universe where Led Zeppelin never happened, but some something eerily similar had happened, and it was pretty cool, but not Zeppelin
- and JA in the AM was also strangely different, starting with something other than "Wake Up."

I am calmer now, but still shaken.

The Oscar:

Like Bronwyn, I found out about WFMU from reading Key of Z in high school. My freshman year in college happened to coincide with an outsider music series at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA (Irwin did a presentation, paired with a performance by BJ Snowden). Around that same time I discovered Beware of the Blog, which I read religiously, and found a bootleg DVD of a couple of the Irritainment specials on a trip to NYC. But here's the kicker: I didn't actually start listening regularly until maybe a year and a half ago, when it eased my transition from working the record stores to office life. I literally can't imagine how I'd get by without it now, or who I'd be if it weren't for that influence trickling in through my formative years.

One of the things that made me tune in more often to FMU was the sense of humor not found at other stations. I was listening to some shows new to me during a marathon and thought 'these guys are funny, fund drives aren't usually funny, and they seem like they're actually having a good time'.

Not long after reading Key of Z, I tracked down a copy of the Shaggs' 2-on-1 CD on Rounder. As I brought it to the counter, my friends looked concerned and said, "You're actually BUYING it?" At that moment, I remember being conscious that this was a turning point in my life.
Avatar 10:44am

speaking of xpn, i remember thinking fmu was so famous and so important i wouldn't be able to be part of it until i was older and "someone", and so i thought i would start at XPN or some other stations to gradually work my way up to xpn. so i went to xpn and some other stations and asked if i could get involved and they looked at me like i was insane and turned me away. then i went to fmu and they welcomed me with open arms. funny how that works. (no offense to xpn or other stations, it just shows how different and special fmu is)

@dgg: As with any record show, there are times that you'll wish you were smelling Axe body spray, as opposed to the prevailing scents.

@Bronwyn-try listening to music you hate or are on the border of almost liking. Some shows at FMU are like that for me. Bryce comes to mind because of all the noise. This show is kind of on the edge between playing noise, ironic stuff and straight up songs. It will stretch your musical horizons. Look up "10 jazz albums to listen to before you die" and get them from the library. Check out Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn because some country (OLD country, not this new pop/country neutered crap) is really really good. Get the album Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Listen to FMU above all!

I make a point of listening to the crappy pop station my 7 year old likes because some of it (about 15%) is hypnotically interesting! Along the lines of Blondie's Heart of Glass.

Lol. we aren't axe body spray types I guess. I assume everyone listening smells like me. Which is sort of melange of pizza, cigarette smoke, and cheap detergent. With a hint of phermonal b.o.

neil, i have the o brother where art thou soundtrack, its so great! i love old country. there's not a lot of music i hate. i would say the only stuff that's unlistenable to me is super screamy metal (which doesn't stop me from occasionally playing it, lol)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
NotARealDoctor:

@Wild Neil, I totally get that! That's why I listen to Fabio, it's kind of on the edge of what I can enjoy and it's a great musical exercise for my brain. And I secretly love Taylor Swift, even though I usually hate pop music.

Black Metal (95% of it) and Satanic Stuff (if really overt) is my kinda no go zone, although Black Sabath is a literally guilty pleasure. I am a hardcore, right wing Catholic you see. My wife gets on me for liking Iggy Pop.

I played there (C.T.) in the '80s and liked the mixed crowd vibe: punx, blacks, hippies, lawyers, jocks, weirdos. The staff was hep, some may have been Woofmooers.
