Favoriting March 20, 2018: Mad Max Special Pt. 1: PAUL JOHNSTONE (Cundalini of Mad Max)
Paul Johnstone who portrayed Cundalini in George Miller's "Mad Max" joins Devon to discuss his experiences as the mustachioed, Lolita heart-shaped glasses-wearing biker in Toecutter's menacing motorcycle gang in the 1979 Australian dystopic action film which kicked off the franchise. Paul got his start in musical theater in Australia's first productions of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in the 1970s and continued on as a touring/session drummer and vocalist for Australia bands such as The Models, Straw Dogs and The Dexters, working today as an in-demand voice actor. Devon will debut the once thought lost George Miller-rejected "End Credits" that Paul recorded for the film with Stewart D'Arrietta, David Cafe and George's brother Bill Miller. "That there is Cundalini...and Cundalini wants his hand back!"

i never saw mad max until 2010ish and it seemed kind of hokey to me the. good yes, but still hokey.

David in London:

Ah, back on Morricone Island. It’s going nicely with this cold martini.

Love this Brian May score. Here's another golden oldie from Brian (no sarcasm meant):

This is a pleasant surprise for a Sydney listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm

just like easy rider's diner scene.
Avatar 7:16pm

the loathing? straight from any biker film.

Great interview so far
Avatar 7:17pm
Linda Lee:

good storyteller = good interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Rich in Washington:

so weird to have only recently heard the original dialog to Mad Max, after watching the US cut VHS tape non-stop from high school on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Aitch:

People should have a look at the movie Stone as well, would be obscure in USA. www.imdb.com...
Avatar 7:19pm
Linda Lee:

never heard a New Zealand native speak of it with anything but sincere love. must be quite a place.
Avatar 7:20pm
Linda Lee:

@Aitch ~ looks like a fun film. like it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm

linda - yes, great person to just sit and listen to and ignore everything else around you.

got to see Mad Max again now. it's been 40 years!
Avatar 7:28pm
Linda Lee:

i'd love hearing this man sing.
  7:28pm
David in London:

I’ve avoided Mel Gibson’s films of late due to his rather unpleasant views on a number of topics, but I’m really wanting to see Mad Max again now.
Avatar 7:29pm
Linda Lee:

screw him, really. if it's enjoyable work, let's see it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Devon E. Levins:

Thanks All for swimming back to Morricone Island post marathon. And special thanks, of course, to all who pledged to Morricone Island specifically!! We couldn't do it without you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Rich in Washington:

I don't even know if you can get that badly dubbed US version if you wanted to now.
Curiously, one of my local broadcast TV channels played Mad Max a few years ago and it would cut back and forth between the dubbed version and the original version, I think in order to censor something not suitable for regular TV? I am not sure.
  7:31pm
David in London:

@Linda Lee. Yeah, I generally don’t worry too much about such things, but I find him so repulsive now that I just steered clear. But you’re right, time to just do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Rich in Washington:

I like the first two Max films, but by Thunderdome, Mel's ego seemed really swollen and he looked extra ridiculous in that wig.
Avatar 7:33pm
Linda Lee:

i've been steering clear since Braveheart ~ mainly because his films haven't interested me, but also because he's a repulsive person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Michael 98145:

know what you mean, @LL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Rich in Washington:

"things changed": mel's anti-semitic meltdown.
Avatar 7:35pm
Linda Lee:

wasn't a real fan to start with ~ and then "things changed" :-D
  7:36pm
David in London:

Yeah, his filmography has provided pretty slim pickings of late, it’s true. I appreciated the nuttiness of Apocalypto though.
Avatar 7:36pm
Linda Lee:

Apocawhat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Michael 98145:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm

Fury Road works if you imagine 'Max' is actually The Feral Kid all grown up.
  7:38pm
Sugartits:

Oh, Mel's not so bad.
Avatar 7:38pm

MAN I would have loved to see that Cundalini/Johnny teamup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Michael 98145:

i think what -really- turned me off was his "Flailing of the Christ" and the sick following it attracted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
dale:

i liked apocolypto. not historically accurate perhaps but good adventure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
dale:

last time i saw it was on a telemundo type station - it didn't really matter, there's so little dialog.
Avatar 7:42pm
Fox:

Dale and David: THANK YOU. I thought Apocalypto was a really great movie and nobody has ever agreed with me.
Avatar 7:43pm
Linda Lee:

that's enough for me, Fox. i'll check it out.
Avatar 7:43pm
Fox:

Man, Devon! You have such great interviews!
  7:44pm
David in London:

@Michael. Yeah, that was really unwholesome. And that ludicrously pretentious second ‘the’...
Avatar 7:44pm
Linda Lee:

i don't remember even noticing this luscious music ~ hmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Aitch:

Apocalypto is a good movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
dale:

yes - total adrenaline from the beginning.
Avatar 7:46pm
Fox:

I think Apocalypto suffered in the box office basically because nobody wanted to like the film directed by jewish slur ranting and "Passion of the Christ" era Mel.
Avatar 7:46pm
RomanDogBird:

gee ya think
Avatar 7:47pm
Linda Lee:

that's called 'box office poison' ..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
ultradamno:

I thought Apocalypto was fundamentally terrible.
  7:48pm
Listener Robert:

These were submitted as end credits for "The Road Warrior"? Or for the 2nd movie?
  7:48pm
David in London:

Fox, the ‘twist’ ending was really effective I thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm

I got to see Mad Max for the first time by riding into a drive-in in the trunk of my older brother's car. The ultimate drive-in flick.

I get mixed up as to the titles of the series.

Your host was right. This would not have been the best choice. Uh, by far!
Avatar 7:52pm
Linda Lee:

pretty great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Devon E. Levins:

you wanted to here him sing, Linda!
  7:52pm
David in London:

Bit of a spirit of The Ramones creeping in there perhaps.
Avatar 7:52pm
Linda Lee:

loved it. :-D
  7:53pm
Listener Robert:

It would've been a good selection for a teaser/trailer for the movie, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Devon E. Levins:

This is a musical theater production in which Paul sang backups and played drums and production on
Avatar 7:54pm

what was the show? don't recognize it at all ~
Avatar 7:55pm
Linda Lee:

that sound! like The Apple!

I am just hearing this now in July 2019. Been a Mad Max junkie since I was 11. This and Road Warrior were easily the two most influential movies in my life.. And to hear this on archive.. Thank you!!!!
