One trick for cassettes: have an extra equalizer to boost sounds, if not, turn volume & treble nobs to the brightest signal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Kat in Chicago:

Ironically, I'm digging those out as possible source material for a mixtape I'm actually gonna get paid for making.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
coelacanth∅:

the 8-track tapes need to be tuned-up. it should be expected that the glue that holds the tape together (& signals the program change) would fail after 4 decades. and the foam pads rot. it's all available and easy to replace. then the player might need a tracking adjustment (a srew on the bottom, usually) and a cleaning.
they sound pretty good.

coelacanth∅: I used to tape things on the fly. So now there's not much of a note as to date or description. I put it on and it's this crazy mix from years ago. I always figured that whatever I liked would be pulled off the air soon. Sometimes that happened. More reason to support 'FMU.

@Daniel: Disco and funk, lounge, music for the drag queens to perform to, maybe a lil Stereolab at the end of the night. I'm hoping some of the MC-ing for the drag shows made it on there.

Here's a thing I used to do: I lived at the top of Riverside Drive by the Cloisters in 97-98 and got a pretty good FMU signal, but worked weird hours/jobs and missed some evening radio. tapes i had to remake for playing to death: the cure (faith on one side,17 seconds on the other); Eno (another green world) with beatles for sale on the other side; the indestructible sounds of soweto with graceland on the other side...i don't think any of those were tdks.

is the fm signal sound quality of WFMU better than the AAC stream?

Jinx! fleep! Glad you digg!!! I should play some Scritti when it's not teh holiday party! Kat, I want to hear this shtuff of yrs at Lucky C!

Yes, VHS if done right gives you a ton of audio space. I had friends who took that to Cuba and other places, 20 yrs or more ago.

Kat, Bill Kelly was one of my earlier regular shows on fmu as well. i have a few pre-archive tapes. i hardly ever hear him now.

yeah I am not sure that digital is or was better than analogue. convos like this make me wish I didn't toss old technology once someone deemed it obsolete. Now you can just record on a 512gb flash drive. But it isn't more fun.

fleep:

muhrvis you have them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Kat in Chicago:

@Daniel That whole time in my life is so emotionally fraught that I've never listened to those tapes since I made them, but they potentially work with a theme I'm considering for this new project. So I'm going to be brave and listen next weekend I think.

Did I tell you I met Dave the Spazz's father once? I think it was at Powell's in Portland. One can meet important people by wearing an FMU t-shirt.

el Garee Rayo le Bee~:

A- I would say that the compressed AAC stream is better than the analogue FM, which is also compressed as well. But in most places, the AAC 'FMU stream sounds brilliant. Actually I never listened to WFMU on a car radio. That would be a rush.

Anthony you can get a cd burner that burns in "real" time. you can fade songs out or stop them at any point, adjust levels accordingly -etc. ...just like we used to do with cassettes.

Wow, this is intense message board. But I'm in Fla now and the streams sound awesome. I had a stream break about 30 min ago. Doesn't happen often. Could be the local carrier.

Well, most VHS decks that can record in stereo are considered “Hi-Fi” even if they don’t explicitly say so. The timer functionality is a big deal as well. No real consumer tape decks that could record on a timer… And VHS could store a lot of audio on one VHS cassette.

many of the cassette decks i've owned could be used with a timer (to record or play) but at the very most for 3 hours of record time. (dual, automatic flip, consecutive play)
