Avatar 12:30pm BronwynB:

hi jack :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm joe:

'ello folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm joe:

I don't think I have ever heard this. I love that guitar back there.
Avatar 12:46pm Julie:

This was the first version of Jolene I ever heard. One of many covers I heard Olivia do first. (Gimme Some Lovin' anybody?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm joe:

I bet you I have heard a lot more ONJ then I am aware of. I would venture to guess that if you were to sit me down and play me a good selection of her singles I would many times go ...oh yeah that's Olivia Newton John I didn't know that. :)
Avatar 12:49pm Cheri Pi:

My mom raised us on ONJ
Avatar 12:50pm Julie:

my first records were Olivia records, given to me by my sister who decided they were "too country" for her (If Not For You and Have You Never Been Mellow.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm joe:

Oh I was always infatuated with her music as a very young child but I never ventured from what was the singles at that time (didn't know how to )
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For some reason, hearing "Have You Never Been Mellow" reminds me of high school times when I was nervous about finishing a term paper. Also, any Olivia Neutron-John coming up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm fred:

I'm a huge Juliana Hatfield fan, but know next to nothing about Olivia Newton-John. Basically only what I heard on Julie's show
  12:53pm Stuart Troutman:

enough with this ONJ crud....these records were bad enough to begin with....this isn't amusing.
  12:55pm SeanG:

this sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm dale:

LOVE that onj gets the reassessment treatment. i'm sure most millenials have no clue who she is. as long as we don't hear 'let's get physical' i'm happy to hear her stuff again.
Avatar 12:55pm Joe B:

Fred, Julie is the expert! I am a ONJ poser, I only know the hits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm dale:

julie - slide guitar on 'if not for you' is great.
Avatar 12:57pm Joe B:

agree Dale - her version is based on the George Harrison one hence the slide
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm dale:

....but olivia was 'country' the same way marie osmond was - not very.
Avatar 12:57pm Julie:

Stuart's reaction is what I brace for when I play Livvy but luckily folks are used to by now (from me anyway!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm joe:

Oliva Newton John poser. That's great. Somebody make Joe a shirt that says that "I'm an Olivia Newton John poser"
Avatar 12:57pm Julie:

@JoeB Hadn't ever heard the Bruce Welch before though, so nice job digging!
Avatar 12:58pm Joe B:

wow, a ONJ angle you hadn't covered!
Avatar 12:58pm Julie:

@dale and it didn't make sense considering she was a big Rondstadt fan who kinda veered that direction too. Maybe she was embarrassed, it wasn't cool to like Olivia.
Avatar 12:59pm Joe B:

Julie, that's the same misguided school of thought I grew up with like 'the monkees suck because they don't write their own songs bla blah blah' . easy to ignore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm dale:

we had the 45 of 'paper roses' on the console.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm joe:

The effects of country on music in the 70's could probably make for some great stories once one started digging I'm sure it was a very intresting time for that.
  1:00pm Stuart Troutman:

there IS no 'cool' at work here....bad music is simply bad
Avatar 1:01pm Julie:

and then there were the folks who were appalled at this English/Aussie gal trying to sing country.
  1:02pm complainy:

I Love this fucking song. MAGIC !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm dale:

keith urban has spent more on hair care products than olivia ever did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm fred:

@Julie: Fred Von Helsing would usually call her Olivia Neutron Bomb when you played her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm dale:

now i wanna hear john denver with olivia on backup - fly away.
Avatar 1:04pm Julie:

and then of course Olivia and Cliff go back to the mid 60s.
Avatar 1:05pm Julie:

$500 plus on discogs for that single! I don't have it either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm joe:

I jsut got multiple copies of the Magic single when I was gifted with the remains an old DJ's 45 collection
Avatar 1:05pm Julie:

oooh joe, nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm joe:

Yeah Julie let me see what I have and I'll reach out to you. I don't need to keep multiple copies.
Avatar 1:09pm Julie:

By the way, American Laundromat got all the Juliana goodies out early, mine came last week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm fred:

Juliana Hatfield also did a great Neil Young cover (only love can break your heart)
Avatar 1:12pm Joe B:

damn that was the song i was trying to think of! not after the gold rush. d-oh!
Avatar 1:14pm glenn:

there is a band called olivia neutron bomb. they're from trawna.
Avatar 1:16pm Julie:

there is also the japanese group Olivia New Ton John that does a great version of Cherry Bomb
Avatar 1:17pm Julie:

This is a favorite of mine too (and a karaoke go-to)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm fred:

I'm so happy to learn that Juliana Hatfield knows about WFMU
  1:17pm SeanG:

Juliana playing in Somerville this Friday!
Avatar 1:18pm Joe B:

have you performed it at sid golds'?
Avatar 1:18pm Julie:

@sean I think it is her ONLY Olivia show
  1:18pm SeanG:

WOW! still tickets left too
Avatar 1:19pm Joe B:

i'd be road tripping if yo la tengo wasn't playign that same night in brooklyn
  1:19pm Peter in tappan:

This is wonderful
Avatar 1:19pm saintMichael:

this is great. I'm now a fan of Juliana H
Avatar 1:19pm Julie:

@JoeB No! All they have there is Physical, Magic and Xanadu. Sometimes I can talk the pianist into playing Hopelessly Devoted though.
  1:20pm FletcherNYC:

Is that a Mellotron?
  1:20pm Paul D:

Happy Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm fred:

I like the video for this song: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:21pm Julie:

She really nailed that one.
Avatar 1:21pm Joe B:

Fletcher, i ask her later - it's a different keyboard but it has a mellotron setting she used
Avatar 1:22pm Julie:

the commercial is wonderful www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm dale:

does juliana sing 'sam?'
Avatar 1:24pm Julie:

Sam is on don't stop, it was a HUGE hit. She also put out two records that year, 1976, which was kind of overkill.
Avatar 1:25pm Joe B:

sam is not on the album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm The Oscar:

Afternoon all! I've said this around here before, but Juliana used to come into the record store I worked at in Cambridge to sell vinyl. I still have her old Charles Manson record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Michael 98145:

This is fun. My interests never included ONJ. So, thanks, Joe B and JH. ♬
Avatar 1:29pm Joe B:

wish she was on live now, I'd ask her about which records she got rid of there!
Avatar 1:30pm Julie:

She needs to come to Monty Hall and play Olivia songs.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm James in ATL:

Terrific show. Really enjoying the interview. Thanks Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm The Oscar:

Some really great stuff, actually-- a lot of rare '90s vinyl. And a bunch of Lemonheads, which we all found somewhat amusing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm dale:

spanish version of pmp is good too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm dale:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm fred:

I got a chance to meet her during the Minor Alps tour. Disaster
Avatar 1:50pm Joe B:

what happened Fred?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm joe:

great job Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm fred:

@Joe: nothing. I'm very shy, so I just froze
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

Blake Babies, covering Fleetwood? Yes, please!
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

oh, well at least nothing bad happened! better than my usual move of saying something stupid!
Avatar 1:54pm Julie:

Nerdy kid I was, I didn't know ELO until Xanadu came out. I think I spent years ignoring everything on Side B except Xanadu. Now I know how great all their songs for that movie were.
Avatar 1:55pm Joe B:

Julie, do you know the story of this song? I wonder if they intended this version to be used, or if it was a demo they made for her to have as a guide?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm fred:

I guess it could have been worse, but her music has meant so much to me, I wish I could have told her that at least
  1:55pm GH:

Ah, I'd recognize that crappy Jeff Lynne-produced '80s drum sound anywhere ...
Avatar 1:56pm Joe B:

the jeff lynne vocal almost sounds later. wonder if it is a re recording after the fact
Avatar 1:56pm Joe B:

hopefully you'll get another shot fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm doctorjazz:

Great Dylan cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm fred:

I hope I'll get to see her live again, that's the main thing
Avatar 2:00pm Julie:

Nope, sorry, don't know the story behind the demo. If Not For You is such a strange song. A Dylan composition. A lot of her covers released on the early UK albums didn't make it on to the American releases. What is Life, Bread's If. When I found those as a teen in England it was the best moment ever.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hoping that Olivia Newton-John will be free of cancer. Would like to have her around a while longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm dale:

she did what is life? TO THE YOUTUBE!!
  2:04pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Avatar 2:07pm Joe B:

ah thanks jack. i knew it sounded relatively recent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Mike Sin:

I enjoyed that Julianna Hatfield/Olivia Newton John sement. And even more geek info -- Extending the Harrison/Newton-John connection... I think her single after "If Not For You" was a cover of Harrison's "What is Life"... which did chart.
Avatar 2:12pm Mike Steele:

Yeeahh!! Joe Belock!
Avatar 2:14pm Julie:

@MikeSin Did it chart in the US? It wasn't on any of her US albums though it looks like the single did come out in the US in 72. It was on the Olivia album in the UK and internationally, which has the same cover as the If Not For You album but includes a lot more songs.
  2:16pm SeanG:

sounding great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Mike Sin:

@Juli -- will check later, but I know my LP contains both What is Life and Behind that Locked Door, and it could very well be the West German import or something like that.
Avatar 2:23pm Julie:

@MikeS looks like it made #34, but it wasn't on the American albums.
Avatar 2:25pm thedunkel:

It's so great to hear this show. I usually can't because I'm at work, but this is a holiday over here in France
  2:30pm Andy the painter:

i recently had a dream in which i was recruited against my will to be the drummer for guided by voices, because no one else was willing to work with robert pollard anymore. (i’m not a drummer, and i was somehow unable to make sounds in the dream)
the gig was in a church basement, and bob was much older, overweight, and lying on a table, very drunk.
