Mty, Bogaota/Medellin, Lima are my go to for classic cumbias. Now days, the Argies and Euros have created some good stuff as well (and then there are us Yanks).
  11:01pm
still b/p:

I found the cumbia to be not a quickly grasped dance when I had quick lesson exposure years ago. But would like to regroup and regrasp sometime cuz luz the music. Hate to have a “Couldn’t cumbia” epitaph.
Avatar 11:03pm
Kris Holmes:

So many regional variations
Avatar 11:04pm
northguineahills:

@still b/p: just don't think about the rhythm, zen about it. If a gringo honky like me can dance to cumbia, anyone can!
Avatar 11:05pm
northguineahills:

(might have gained a wife (and other friends), from my unorthodox dancing).

Never noticed how much ESG's "My Love For You" nicked from "Seesaw"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Uncle Michael:

I don't know if there are steps I should know, but don't...but I find the cumbia beat incredibly natural to move to.
Avatar 11:06pm
northguineahills:

Mty=Monterrey, MX.

Amen, UM!
  11:06pm
still b/p:

That’s what takes, I guess, because other Latin steps seem more natural and intuitive if ya gots rhythm, but with cumbia it ain’t what head and feet expect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Some GREAT cumbia on this playlist:

@Kris, all: would be curious if there are any S.A. cumbia comps you'd recommend (besides that Roots of Chicha: Psychedelic Cumbias one). Most of the cumbias I've found have been through youtube

@LD: En serio, I just look for for Colombian or Mexi comp LPs (or repressings) w/ the scantiliest clothed women possible. My feminist wife, gave me that advice when we first met and took me crate digging, and she was correct.

Kris Holmes:

this www.discogs.com...
and this www.discogs.com... i can't recommend highly enough
Avatar 11:17pm
northguineahills:

most, but not all LP comps, will have cumbia in the title. from there, find artists you like, and go from there.
Avatar 11:20pm
northguineahills:

Then, as UM knows, my best scores were cdrs of cumbia rebada at drug front in the rough side of Mty. When they realized this gringo actually wanted music and not drugs, they laughed their asses off (my wife had to explain it to them, as my gringo spanish was really bad back then).
