Early hello Doug, will be absent for most of the show.
D:O was celebrating Cecil Taylor's birthday only two weeks ago.
To quote a Lord Buckley line about Joyce Cary's character Gully Jimson. The nurse says "Don't you think that you should laugh a little less and pray a little more"
Gully "It's the same thing" And then he flipped out.

Cecil Taylor died?! I knew something was wrong when I woke up this morning. The world has suffered a great loss.

'Tis true, duke. 'Tis awfully true.

good morning, it's going to be a good show today; sad for the circumstances, though. great photo, doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29am Doug Schulkind:

Great greetings, annie!
Avatar 8:29am annie:

clicked the pop-up to get a half-hour of random drummer-some-ness before the show. i was listening to KSDS, they have great early morning jazz; no mention whatsoever of cecil at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

Columbia University's WKCR is playing Cecil all day today before switching at midnight to their Billie Holiday birthday broadcast.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:47am doctorjazz:

Hi-sad to hear CT passed. Will check out WKCR after the GTDR and UM shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
You are free to roam about the cabin of your mind. Until the captain illuminates the Seat Belt sign. of course.
Avatar 8:58am ausmanx:

a strange conjoining, but Cecil and Mark E Smith within a couple of months, there's too much to celebrate right there (and i see these things as excuses to celebrate the work). good evening all, now we've gone off summer time, i get more Drummer, which is pleasing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

Pleased you are pleased, ausmanx.
  9:01am Listener Robert:

Wait -- when you come on and say, "Give the Drummer Some begins in 3 minutes," doesn't that mean that in fact it's already begun?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
That would imply that I am fucking with the time/space continuum.

...and i wanted to mention that the movie "The Winding Stream" on netflix is pleasingly good; i tend to avoid the voice-over deals. this is done in excellent taste and the ending is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

@annie
I like streams.

Give the Letters Arms (and/or Butts?) and a TARDIS
  9:13am Listener Robert:

When Ken announced this week that WFMU was about to inaugurate yet another audio stream, I inferred something I hadn't appreciated. Since the existing streams still consist largely of curated-automated hours, that means you must enjoy curating them so much that it chafes a little when some of those hours get a DJ, hence the demand for another stream.
Avatar 9:14am annie:

i bet you do!!!! the upside to the movie's title is that it's one of my favorite tunes for ear-worm ness.... so i'v been humming it as long as the the next one invades my brain.
Avatar 9:16am annie:

how soon will it start LR?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

More DJs! More streams!
  9:24am Listener Robert:

I don't know when, annie. However, I've been wondering for a while whether WFMU would be better off with a franchise model for the streams. That is, that WFMU would adopt them as official while keeping Auricle Communications out of them financially, except maybe for seed money.

I think that was approximately the arrangement for Newt Radio from the Newton Theatre a year ago, which unfortunately couldn't stand on its own after a quarter of operation and so folded. Apparently the charter of the non-profit running the theater wouldn't allow continued support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Uncle Michael:

Ken only announced that another stream is being considered.

The GTDR stream is not a financial drag on the station. We bring in more than we cost to operate.

But hey, facts...
  9:30am Ramblin' Ray:

Hello Doug and fellow ear-wiggers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Uncle Michael:

And Robert, your inference that the demand for a new stream has anything at all to do with any existing stream's willingness to host more live programming is just ludicrous.
Avatar 9:32am annie:

personally, i listen to the alternate streams not very often, mostly just when radio options are skimpy. yeah, i would expect that drummersome stream does do pretty well.. how do the other streams fit into that? are they counted?
9:34am Jeff g. via app, at UVM:

Not a financial drag, but we do add some wind resistance.

REST IN POETRY, CECIL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Andrew Waterloo:

the streams have the advantage of being curated by someone else, and not having many constraints. I feel like I've neglected the Ichiban stream now that it has a few shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, Ramblin' Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Goyim in the AM:

I love the Drummer djs and the Ichiban robot more than vice versa, but I love all of it more than anything non-WFMU. I am sad about Cecil Taylor, and amazed that he kept turning back to being a productive genius after, shall we say, certain self-induced challenges in his life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Streams. DJs. Curators. WFMU. The more the merrier. Having only two years is a bitch.

Reading up on Buell Neidlinger on Wikipedia I am knocked out. Besides Cecil Taylor: Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," the Eagles' "Hotel California," Jimmy Giuffre, Frank Zappa, Van Dyle Parks, Earth Wind and Fire, Barbara Streisand, and more. And I guess we just lost him a few weeks ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

More Denis Charles on this trio performance!

@Mr C
I have subscribed to that podcast and plan to begin listening as soon as I graduate (in three weeks!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Buell Neidlinger is playing here, too. And he is playing with Mr. Taylor, again and forever.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am !ke:

I've heard music in my time that amazed, astonished, gobsmacked, irritated, terrified, and delighted me in tremendous and edifying ways (mostly on WFMU or its streams); I've heard music that has made me nearly hallucinate; I've heard music that has made me nearly levitate or feel like I'm in the atmosphere, or in Hell (the latter mostly Diamanda Galas, of course); but I've gotta say, Doug, in reply to your comment, I've never heard anything that was like losing my virginity. Nope.

Cecil Taylor – piano
Jimmy Lyons – alto saxophone
Sunny Murray – drums
Avatar 10:28am northguineahills:

@Ike: I have, but the pH was lowered in my brain when I lost my virginity, and I was listening to an album that's still a favorite of mine (the two became intertwined).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am !ke:

pH was lowered in your brain?!? What on Earth does that even mean? And how can you tell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Not sure anyone affiliated with WFMU has played more Cecil Taylor than the Drummer Stream's Jeff Golick. If there is one person, it would be Scott McDowell, host of The Long Rally.

Jeff Golick is on the stream this Sunday with D:O Radio. Then, Scott McDowell will be filling in for Jeff on the following Sunday, April 15. So there likely to be a lot more Cecil Taylor on the Drummer Stream for a good while.
