uh, guess i'm a bit early? hello future everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Parq:

Hi, Kuba. The wonder of it all, hey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Sem:

Woo hoo! Hiya, David, kuba, Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
David D:

Greetings Sem, Parq, and Kuba of the past!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
Parq:

David, is that your Leipzig studio or is that a shot of those guys from somewhere else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
David D:

Parq: That is my view at this very moment (without the guys).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Parq:

Okay, then, I gotta ask - what in the world is that hanging behind them? By the way, I love the sound of a bass clarinet so dang much -- this is gonna be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
David D:

That is a big "radio" tuned to Radio Blau. I don't think it works, though.
Avatar 4:15pm
geezerette:

The sort of liturgical underpinning with the wry bob-and-weave of
of a stand up comic is so layered & historically complex.
Of course, the same could be said of many kinds of music.
Avatar 4:18pm
geezerette:

These guys are wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
doctorjazz:

Hi, psyched for the show.
(man, that clarinet sounds GREAT!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
doctorjazz:

Missed the intro, but that's a clarinet doing the bass, sounds like to me (Bass clarinet...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
doctorjazz:

Of course, I didn't look at the picture, question answered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
David D:

Geezerette, that is a very interesting point - and departure point for discussion. Anyone feel free to chime in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
David D:

Doctorjazz: All different types of clarinet throughout the hour, in fact!
Avatar 4:31pm
Lewis:

so cool - here I am sitting watching the snow melt in Minneapolis listening to beautiful music from Leipzig. wish I could see the clarinets!
Avatar 4:34pm
geezerette:

There's also a middle eastern aspect.
What I find most compelling about Klezmer is the mixture of tears and laughter, both extreme and intermingled. It pushes the clarinet's ability to evoke the human voice. Both sophisticated and unsubtle, I suppose the
painted equivalent would be Chagall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
David D:

Lewis, glad you can be here - and that the snow is melting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
David D:

Geezerette - that does sum up traditional Klezmer. The Chagall comparison is a very interesting one, I'll be thinking about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Sem:

@geezerette: lovin' the analysis. The idea of an equivalence of Klezmer and Chagall makes me reach my big book of great painting. Thanks!
Avatar 4:54pm
geezerette:

David and Sem, thanks very much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
Parq:

I'm really enjoying your comments, took, Geez. Such elegance and insight -- you leave nothing to be added.
Avatar 5:01pm
geezerette:

One thing more, if you're an animation lover, The Fleischer Bros. Animation makes extensive use of Klezmer as well as blues & jazz, which are compatible with it for obvious reasons.
Avatar 5:01pm

Parq, you flatterer. :)

Avatar 5:53pm

Sem,that's real isn't it?
Avatar 5:54pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, it's a fave of mine. I almost want one, but since I have background of the Sami, or live w/in close proximity of their homeland, I feel it would be inappropriate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
Sem:

Yep, @geezerette, there was a brief period of about 2 years when the country was between overlords, and the flag is a relic of that true interregnum, so to say.
Avatar 5:54pm
northguineahills:

@geezerette: Yep, that's real. (flag nerd)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm

Not into nationalism. (I do like the anarchist black flag.) But I like graphics. Just saw Greenland's recently, sleek and mod. Like the Iroquois Confederacy one too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm

NGH: Yes, interestingly, the World (and European) Cup are the only occasions when you will see any significant number of flags flown here in Germany.
Avatar 6:37pm
TDK60:

Anyone recall the Yippie flag? Black anarchist field with socialist red star with green cannabis leaf in front. Ha! // One might see why Germans are wary of flags.

Yeah, I love the Nepalese flag, as well as the Bhutanese and Tibetan (and the aforementioned Sami). Cascadia and New England both have nice ones as well. Ohio stands out in the US w/ just state seals w/ blue backgrounds, Oregon, the only state flag to have a different front and obverse
