mce1965:

I think that bit of studio talk included on the Notorious Byrd Brothers CD with Ush gently exhorting the difficult personalities in the studio to just cut the crap and play gives such an insight into his genius as a producer
Avatar 6:22pm
cometothesunshine:

His brilliance was definitely how to operate behind the scenes with difficult people
Avatar 6:22pm
mce1965:

exactly
Avatar 6:26pm
mce1965:

And may I say that if it was not for the much maligned CD format, that bit never would have been made available to the masses... but I digress

such a gorgeous song
Avatar 6:32pm
cometothesunshine:

this is such an unbelievable production - the LP version is nowhere near as great
Avatar 6:32pm

I have the original songwriting demo and it is even more eerie

Was that the A side?

I'm glad you included this... it's not out of place at all
  6:41pm
Steve Bonilla:

Atypical chord progression.
  6:45pm
Steve Bonilla:

I hear hints of Sacramento in this song.
Avatar 6:46pm
cometothesunshine:

He was really developing his production chops at Decca
Avatar 6:49pm
cometothesunshine:

Gary recorded 3 45's with 11-year-old Keith Green.
Avatar 6:51pm
mce1965:

It's really surprising none of his work for Decca was even a semi hit... probably down to Decca's inability to properly promote non-MOR and country singles
Avatar 6:52pm
cometothesunshine:

He did not produce many hits period, but was good at talking people into letting him make great records
Avatar 6:57pm
cometothesunshine:

More Red Rhodes
Avatar 6:59pm
cometothesunshine:

Another great record with no radio play

Avatar 7:01pm

Did Gary ever work with the Raiders?
Avatar 7:05pm

Well, he repurposed their "Louise" for Keith Allison
Avatar 7:08pm

I guess they were comfortable sticking with Terry Melcher.

That Beverly Williams song was an also-ran for the Rhino "One Kiss Can Lead to Another" comp, but it absolutely should've been included.
